Hooley Around Cooley Cycle
The date for this annual Cycle has been confirmed as Sunday the 29th September.
A League Two Soccer footballer who hails from Glenn, Newry is in the running for the English League Two Goal of the Season.
Shay McCartan hails from Glenn and is at present on loan to Lincoln City from Bradford City. He has also played on the Northern Ireland squad.
The twenty five year old forward's cracker goal for Lincoln against Swindon, 12 January is presently in the lead of the competition at 29% and his friends from Newry want it to stay that way so get voting.
There's only a 2% gap between Shay and nearest competitor Hiram Boateng so your vote will certainly count.
Speaking about the goal Shay said “I knew it was a good goal because I could see by the lad’s reactions. It was funny because I’d not trained well all week, so they took the mickey out of me a little bit with not training too well then scoring a goal like that so it was a good feeling.”

Before moving to England Shay played Gaelic for Glenn and his college St Colman's as well as Soccer for Banbridge Town and Glenavon.
Sky Sports have picked their top 12 goals from the 2018/19 Sky Bet League Two season and they are asking the public to vote for their favourite.
To vote for Shay all you have to do is go to the link WWW.SKYSPORTS.COM and Click on Shay's link
This week was a busy one for the club with athletes performing on the track, road, trail, mountains and Parkrun. Locations covered this week where Belfast, Newry, the Mournes, Antrim, Markethill, Dublin and Killarney.
NI OPEN MEET - MARY PETERS TRACK, BELFAST
On a mild Tuesday evening, three Newry AC athletes attended an ANI Open Meet at the Mary Peters Track with track side support of coach Kookie O'Hagan.

New team member, Bernadette Salisbury had a debut performance in the 100m. Setting her nerves aside, Bernadette had a strong run in what can be an intimidating race for first timers. She came across the line in 16:18 which will now be a benchmark for her summer training.
Masters Multi-eventer Joanne McCauley used the evening as a good training session. She took on the 100m lifting a PB of 14:55, 200m with a SB time of 30:01 and jumping 3:90m in the Long Jump.
Young Gary Crummy had the club performance of the evening in the 800m. Determined to break the 2 minute mark he set off the line hard and fast. He stayed in the top three in the first 400m before fighting for pole position right up to the final few metres where he had to accept 2nd place on the line. Gary’s performance was rewarded with the pleasing news he had broke the 2 minutes with a fantastic time of 1:57:99.
NEWRY 10k, NEWRY
John McCaffrey took part in the popular and well supported Newry 10k organised by Newry City Runners on Tuesday evening.
John had a good run in a competitive race and was happy to finish in 14th with a time of 39:24 out of a massive race field of 267.

HILL & DALES RACE 5, ROCKY
Thursday night saw the fifth of the Hill & Dales Race Series being attended by a dedicated crew of eight Newry AC mountain runners of which four came home in the top twenty and 3 lifting category prizes. The start and finish base was Leitrim Lodge and this was a clockwise route taking in the four summits of Rocky, Tornamrock, Tienan’s Castle and Altataggart. The night was warm and 225 runners arrived to take part in this popular course.
There was no stopping Esther Dickson taking another win as top female finisher and making that 4 wins out of 4, finishing an impressive 10th overall in a time of 36:29. Esther is on top mountain running form and with this lead it will be hard for the other ladies to topple her from the top of the series leaderboard.
Maurice Harte was in fantastic running form and battled hard on the final downhill to take a fantastic 7th placing, 1st MV40 in a time of 36:07 and first home for the Newry AC crew. Adam Ervine followed in 14th and Warren Cartmill in 19th and lifted 1st MV45.
Finishing Times for the entire crew were:
Maurice Harte, 36:07 1st MV40Esther Dickson 36:29 1st FemaleAdam Ervine, 37:23Warren Cartmill 38:16 1stMV45Aidan Murray 39:27Sarah Quinn 41:55David Burns 52:09Ciara Coffey 52:12
KILLARNEY PARK RUN, Co. KERRY
Sarah Jane Beattie took time out on her County Kerry holiday trip to take part in the Killarney Parkrun on Saturday morning. Conditions were damp but this did not deter Sarah Jane, who was the first female over the line in a time of 22:02.
GOSFORD 5K, MARKETHILL
Lee Maginnis took time out on Saturday to take part in Gosford 5k in the beautiful surrounding of Gosford Forest Park. Lee completed the slightly over 5k route in 18:36 to lift the 1st overall podium placing.

NIMRA ANNALONG HORSESHOE MOUNTAIN RACE, MOURNES
After a dry and clear week, a set of brave mountain running souls took on the new Annalong Horseshoe Championship race route. This is a long route which for the first time in 37 years moved its base from Dunnywater and started at the Silent Valley Reservoir. From the start point at ‘The Plug Hole’ the runners had to follow the set route to the Ben Crom Reservoir Stile and then summit in order Slieve Lamagan, Cove, Slieve Commedagh, Slieve Donard, Chimney Rock, Slieve Binnian North Tor South Side and then return back to the Plug Hole in Slient Valley. This was approximately 23km in distance and 2,050 metres in ascent.
A lot of the runners, despite years of running in the Mournes were not familiar with parts of the course and a few not having done a recce coupled with a cloudy, misty day, resulted in a variety of interesting route choices. Many of the mountain runners encountered navigational challenges in the white outs or found it hard to find the dibbers. The mist lifted a bit towards the end of the race, and from about Chimney Rock onwards, many runners just chose to follow whomever they could see ahead of them! The last 1k to the finish line was a welcome site for the runners.
4 brave Newry AC souls were part of this pilgrimage. Adam Ervine finished 14th in 3:27:14; Paul Le Blanc finished 16th, 2nd MV55 in 3:41:12; Cathal McGreevy finished 17th, 3rd MV50 in 3:41:15 and Sarah Quinn finished in 4:31.

IRISH MILERS CLUB (IMC) MEET, DUBLIN
Gary Crummy travelled down to Dublin on Saturday to race in the 1,500m event at the prestigious IMC event. With coach Kookie O’Hagan by his side, Gary was out to use the fast pace set by the other competitors to gain himself a PB. From the start gun, Gary set out determined to maintain pace and worked hard to stay up at the front pack. This, he did, and was rewarded with shaving an amazing 11 seconds off his current times to made a 4:04.53 PB and 4th place.
Gary is now setting off for Australia, and Newry AC wish him a safe journey and enjoyable year out there. Gary will be missed on the track by his track mates but they await his return and hopefully he will maintain his strict training regime in Aussieland and come back to beat his Irish PBs. Have a great time, Gary.
ULSTER SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS, ANTRIM FORUM
Eve Welsh and Meadow McCauley represented their schools at the Ulster Schools Championships held at the Antrim Forum on Saturday. It was a cold and damp day but this did not deter the girls enjoying their events. Meadow finished 5th place in the Intermediate Girls 800m with 2:28.28 in a very fast and competitive race. Eve raced in the Mini Girls 800m finishing in 6th place with a great time of 2:37.61.

Under 12.5 League
Our U12.5s played out a superb match on Thursday night against Derrynoose at sunny Craobh Rua. From their performance there are sure signs this young group of hurlers are making steady progress. Aaron Lonergan steadied the team from the goalkeeping position and later came out to play in defence showing great leadership.
In defence his brother Ciaron alongside Ryan McGuinness, Jack Bradley and Dathai Murphy all battled very well and provided the forwards with plenty of ball.
The mid field trio of Shea Loughran, Oran Campbell and Tomas Mc Cann eventually wore down the opposition from the ‘Noose with their lively play and their attacking abilities were then showcased. In forwards we had Mel Connolly, Shea Cunningham, Eoin Mc Eldowney, Cathal Mc Keown and debutant Conor Devlin who worked together really well and created lots of scoring opportunities with the team scoring total of 3-11.
Next up is Thursday match away v Portadown.

A Night for Sam
A great night was had by all at the club on Saturday at A Night for Sam. The clubhouse was packed to rafters as the community came together to raise funds for the Mathers family at a difficult time. Sam Mathers, who is the wife of our club member, committee member and team mentor Bob and mother of our underage footballer Tristan, is a great friend of the club and is currently battling against illness.
The club would like to extend its sincere thanks to everyone who weighed in behind the event and helped out in any way to make it such a successful night in such a short space of time – all those who donated auction and raffle prizes, the brilliant Street Legal band, the sound and lighting guys, the marquee provider, the cool van supplier, the evergreen MC Pat McGinn, all the bar staff, the waiters, the bottle and glass collectors, the ticket sellers, burger makers, all the stewards, NM&D District Council, all the Shane’s committee members and anyone else who helped out in any way.

We would ask everyone to continue to keep Sam, Bob, Tristan and their entire family circle in their thoughts and prayers.
Senior Men
A disappointing performance from our senior men saw them fall to a two-point defeat away to Whitecross on Friday evening, 1 – 10 to 0 – 11.
Whitecross opened the scoring early on but a free from Paul O’Rourke and two long range efforts from Ciaran Mackin put the Shane’s ahead. The sides then swapped frees, with Paul O’Rourke again on target for away side, to keep two between the sides but Whitecross edged ahead soon after when a high ball caused confusion in the Shane’s defence and the home side bundled the ball to the net to lead by one. A Kristian Magill point tied the game soon after before another pointed Paul O’Rourke free edged the Shane’s ahead again but two late first-half Whitecross points, one from a placed ball, saw them lead by one at the break, 1 – 4 to 0 – 6.
Half-time substitute Mark McCabe brought the sides level again in the opening minutes of the second period before Matthew Girvan slotted over from close range to put the Shane’s back in front only for Whitecross to equalise minutes later with a pointed free. Another long-range score from Ciaran Mackin restored the Shane’s narrow advantage, with Paul O’Rourke firing his fourth point of the game to give the Shane’s a two-point lead. However, Whitecross then hit four points on the bounce to lead by two going into the closing stages but their advantage was reduced to just the minimum when the impressive O’Rourke tapped over another free. The Shane’s battled hard to get back on level terms but their efforts were in vain as Whitecross converted an injury-time free to claim the win by two, 1 -10 to 0 – 11.
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies are at home to Crossmaglen on Monday night at 7.30pm and with both teams currently unbeaten in the league it promises to be a tight game.
U16 Girls
Our U16 girls played out a thoroughly entertaining one-point win over Carrickcruppen last Monday night. It was a great game of football with both sides going out all for the but it was the Shane’s girl who claimed the win on a score-line of 4 – 12 to 6 – 5.
U14.5 Boys
Our U14.5 boys’ amalgamation of Patrick Rankins continued their impressive run of form with great win over Loughilly Gaels in the Division 2 Championship on Friday evening. In what was a very physical game the young Rankins played some good football to claim the win on a score-line of 5 – 8 to 2 – 11 and see themselves through to the quarter-final of the competition. Overall it was a decent performance, particularly considering a number of regulars were still in Barcelona after their flight home was delayed by a couple of days. Thankfully the stranded lads managed to endure an extra two nights in a 4-star hotel with several swimming pools. Luckily, they are all now back on home soil and into the next round of the Championship also.
U12s
Our U12s were in action on Saturday against Keady and despite having a depleted squad due to Confirmation, Communion and illness there was some great football on show in two very competitive games. Training for the continues as normal this week.
U8s & U6s
Well done to all our U8 and U6 footballers who made the short journey to Correnshigo last Thursday night for a couple of challenge games. All the boys and girls on both teams played some brilliant football and we would like to thank Correnshigo for the invite and hospitality. Training for our U8s continues every Wednesday and Friday evening at the field from 6.30pm – 7.30pm.
Well Done
Well done to Caoimhe Feehan, Rachel McCabe and Abbie McVerry who were all part of the Armagh U14 girls’ squad who have qualified for the All-Ireland quarter-finals following the completion of the group stages of the competition on Saturday.

After the Rainbow Run there will be a BBQ at the club and the bar will be open for refreshments. Everyone is in encouraged to get involved in either of the events, the Mud Run or the Rainbow Run - it will be a great day’s craic all round.

Newry AC may have had fewer events this week but the quality of performances outweighed quantity over track, trail and mountain.
RUN A MILE WITH MARY - BELFAST
Sarah Jane Beattie and Gary Crummy took part in the ‘Run A Mile With Mary’ at the Mary Peter’s Track, Belfast, on Friday evening.

This charity event commenced in the afternoon with family/kids fun miles and a celebrity race with Mary Peter’s in attendance. The junior and graded races followed with wheelchair and the Elite races. All proceeds were in aid of the Mary Peter’s Trust.
In the 6-7 minute graded race, Sarah Jane battled with 17 athletes to maintain and take 7th placing in a great time of 5:58:08.
Gary was entered in the highly competitive Elite group against 13 top club runners. He has had some fantastic track performances in his debut season and this event proved another success. The race took off hard and fast and Gary adopted a good race position which he maintained and was able to take third place in a great time of 4:28:29.

ROSTREVOR PARKRUN, KILBRONEY FOREST PARK
3 of the Patterson family and Sarah Jane Beattie attended the Rostrevor Parkrun on Saturday morning. Ethan Patterson blasted round the challenging course to take 1st position in 20:00; Ryan Patterson followed in 8th place with a time of 23:24; Sarah Jane Beattie after a fast mile run in Belfast the night before was still able to zoom around Kilbroney Forest to take 9th overall, 1st female place in a time of 23:28; Myles Patterson followed through in 19th with a time of 27:09.

SLIEVE DONARD MOUNTAIN RACE, NEWCASTLE
On Saturday morning Esther Dickson, Rory Mulvaney and Warren Cartmill joined 164 runners in the annual Slieve Donard Race. This was a 6.2 mile race with 2,800 feet of ascent - the route started and finished at the Newcastle Centre and took the runners through Donard Forest, up the Glen Valley river to the saddle where they then ascended Slieve Donard, at the summit descent was via Thomas Quarry returning through the Forest to the finish. The weather was perfect - warm and dry but ground conditions were wet and slippery in sections after the rain, hail and snow during the week.
Esther Dickson had an impressive run finishing 1st female (11 minutes ahead of the 2nd female, Mari Troeng) and 10th overall. This was a very strong performance by Esther who currently leads the NIMRA and Hill & Dales 2019 series, proven by the fact that she had the 4th overall fastest descent from the Summit to the finish line of 19:29.

Rory Mulvaney continued his consistently strong mountain performances finishing in 13th overall position in a time of 1:06:09 and again an impressive descent time of 20:38.
Warren Cartmill finished in 31st placing with a time 1:13:40 and lifted 2nd place in the MV45 category.

Senior Men
Our senior men put in a great performance to record a brilliant two-point over St Paul’s in Camlough on Sunday afternoon, 2 – 12 to 0 – 16.
St Paul’s led by two points after five minutes before Paddy Gregory got the Shane’s off the mark with a well taken point but St Paul’s continued their bright start and registered the next two scores to lead by three. Two pointed frees from Paul O’Rourke in as many minutes had the Shane’s back to within but a pointed 45 from St Paul’s put them two to the good with fifteen minutes on the clock. The sides then swapped points with Paul O’Rourke popping over a close range free for the home side to keep two between them before four points on the trot for the Shane’s in great five-minute spell put them in front for the first time in the game, the scores coming from Paul O’Rourke, Eamon McCabe, Ciaran Mackin and Ryan McCabe. A late first-half point from St Paul’s saw them go in at the break trailing by one, 0 – 8 to 0 – 7.

Just like the first period St Paul’s registered two early second-half points to nudge themselves back in front again. However, the Shane’s replied in great fashion when Eamon McCabe finished low to the net for the first goal of the game and Raymond Fitzpatrick pointed a great score almost immediately to give the home-side a three-point lead. A pointed free from St Paul’s kept the scoreboard ticking over for them before a brilliant flowing Shane’s move saw Kristian Magill put Matthew Girvan through on the goal and, having rounded the keeper, he coolly slotted the ball home. The Shane’s led by five at this stage but two quick-fire points kept St Paul’s right in the game and three in arrears. Paddy Gregory increased the Camlough sides lead to four with a calmly taken score only for it to be cancelled almost immediately with another pointed free from St Paul’s. With three minutes of normal time remaining Paul O’Rourke clipped over a free from a tight angle to give the Shane’s a four-point advantage but three points, all from frees, from the twenty-ninth to the thirty-fifth minute saw St Paul’s get back to within just one. The away side battled to get back on level terms but the Shane’s defence held firm and a late Paul O’Rourke free sealed the win for the home side on a score-line of 2 – 12 to 0 – 16.
Next up is a game against Whitecross on Friday night.
The club would like to thank Thomas McLoughlin and Bawnless Recruitment for their generous sponsorship of Sunday’s match ball.
Senior Ladies
On Tuesday night our senior ladies travelled to play Sarsfields in the league. In a tight and hard-fought contest, it was the Shane’s who finished strongly to come out on top on a score-line of 2 – 9 to 1 – 5. Star of the show was young Niamh Carragher who came off the bench to hit two brilliant goal and clinch the win. The girls are scheduled to return to action next Saturday at home to Crossmaglen.
U16 Girls
Our U16 girls are home to Carrickcruppen on Monday evening, 6th May at 6.45pm.
A Night for Sam
Next Saturday night, 11th May, the club is hosting a Night for Sam in the club-house. Sam Mathers, who is the wife of our club member and team mentor Bob and mother of our underage footballer Tristian, is a great friend of the club and is currently battling against illness. The night has been organised to raise such much needed funds for the Mathers Family at this difficult time and we are asking everyone to come along and support the event. Music on the night will be provided by the fabulous Anti Ballroom and begins at 9.00pm with tickets priced at £10.00, which are available from members of the Mathers Family and Shane O’Neill’s committee members.
Congratulations
Congratulations to all our underage members who made their Confirmation at the week-end.....we hope you all had a great day.
