Pride of place this week goes to our underage Club hurlers Conor Reavey and Patrick McVerry who were selected to be part of the Ulster Hurling Team Panel which will face a Dublin selection this Tuesday night. Senior Men
Our senior men put in massive performance on Sunday afternoon away to St Paul’s to record a vitally important win, 2 – 12 to 2 – 11.
The sides swapped points in the opening five minutes with the returning Paul O’Rourke getting the Shane’s opening score before a high ball into the Shane’s square was fisted to the net, and St Paul’s led by three. A further two points saw them increase their advantage to five before a surging run by Kristian Magill saw him finish low the net to leave just two between them, but a further two St Paul’s points edged them further ahead again. A Connaire Mackin free was quickly cancelled out by a St Paul’s score and they followed this up with their seventh point of the half to lead by five again but a late first-half point from Paul O’Rourke saw the Shane’s go into the half-time break four in arrears, 1 - 7 to 1 – 3.

The Shane’s made the better start to the second period and had two points on the scoreboard within the first five minutes courtesy of a free from Connaire Mackin and a long-range effort from David McCabe. St Paul’s replied with a point of their own before two frees from Connaire Mackin left just the minimum between the sides but St Paul’s raised their second green flag minutes later to edge four ahead. However, the Shane’s responded with three points in a row, two from Connaire Mackin and the other from Ryan Quinn, to keep the game right in the balance. A pointed free from St Paul’s nudged them two in front only for Connaire Mackin to reduce the deficit to just one with a great score but a tenth point from St Paul’s kept them at arm’s length. With thirty minutes on the clock the Shane’s hit the front for the first time in the contest when a driving run from Greg McCabe saw him find Paul O’Rourke in front of goal and O’Rourke made no mistake in finding the net. The same player slotted over a brilliant point almost immediately to give the Shane’s a two-point advantage but with the game deep into injury time St Paul’s reduced the deficit to just one. The home side fought hard to get back on level terms but the Shane’s players to a man dug deep to hold on to claim a narrow, but fully deserved one-point win, 2 – 12 to 2 – 11.
Wednesday night sees the lads host Tir na nÓg in the last game of the league season and they will be hoping to put in a similar performance to Sunday’s.

Craobh Rua U10s attended the Gary McNaugton & Damien McKearney P7 tournament in Derrynoose last Sunday morning.
This was the first competitive outing for this age group and the first time we veered from the Go-Games format.
We were placed in a group with St Malachys Portadown, Keady, Cumann Pheadaír Naofa Warrenpoint and Dungannon Thomas Clarke's.
We started slowly and went down to very narrow defeats to Dungannon, Warrenpoint and Keady. We beat Portadown, but our slow start cost us we didn’t qualify out of the group.
It was a great experience for the lads and something we can built on going forward.
Míle buíochas to all involved with organising the event and to those who helped with team management and travel arrangements.

Senior Men
Our senior men suffered a narrow one-point defeat away to Mullaghbawn on Sunday afternoon, 1 – 15 to 2 – 11.
Mullaghbawn opened the scoring in the first minute with the first point of the match before Connaire Mackin cancelled it out with a decent effort. The Shane’s were playing with a strong wind at their backs and between the fifth and the twelve minute they fired over four unanswered points courtesy of Kristian Magill (F), Connaire Mackin (F), Ryan McCabe and Greg McCabe. A pointed free for Mullaghbawn reduced the deficit to three before David McCabe was upended in the square and Connaire Mackin stepped up to dispatch the resulting penalty to the net. A further pointed free for Mullaghbawn kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home side before Micheál Brady got on the end of a flowing Shane’s move to fire the ball low to the net for his side’s second goal of the goal, and putting them eight to the good. The sides then swapped pointed frees with Kristian Magill on target for the Shane’s before Mullaghbawn got the fifth point to leave seven between them. With the first-half now in added time Kristian Magill and Raymie Fitzpatrick slotted over a point apiece to give the Shane’s a very healthy nine-point half-time advantage.

With the wind at their backs in the second period Mullaghbawn recorded a goal and a point in the opening ten minutes to reduce the deficit to just five points before Mark McCabe replied for the Shane’s with a well taken point. A further two pointed frees kept Mullaghbawn well in the game before their third point in a row saw them back to within three. A David McCabe point edged the Shane’s four ahead again but a further three points, one from a free left just the minimum between the sides, before they swapped points with Connaire Mackin on target from a placed ball to keep the Shane’s narrowly in front with the game in stoppage time. Another close-range free saw Mullaghbawn tie the game and with time almost they were yet again awarded another simple free which they tapped over to claim the win by one, 1 – 15 to 2 -11.

MONDAY CLUB RUN
Come join us for our clubs Monday run at Slieve Gullion Forest Park for a 6.45pm start time .Meeting point will be at Slieve Gullion car park .Everyone welcome.
It’s been a busy summer of comings and goings at the Newry Showgrounds, as Newry City AFC prepare for life in the Bluefin Sport Championship.
Relegated from the Irish Premiership last season after a meteoric rise that saw four promotions in five seasons take the 2013 reformed club from the Mid Ulster Football League Intermediate B division to the top of the local game, it was maybe inevitable that change would always be afoot.
With the new season only a little over three weeks away, City manager Darren Mullen has welcomed no fewer than five fresh faces into the camp, as his side looks to bounce back to the Irish Premiership at the first time of asking.
Ultan Lennon, Stephen McCavitt and Adam Foley have come in alongside familiar local lads Stevie Moan and John Grant, as Mullen looks to bolster his onfield options ahead of the season opener away to H&W Welders on August 3, but it’s a signing away from the field of play that is set to create a little bit of history down at the Greenbank ahead of the big kick-off.
That’s because, for the first time since reformation, the club has appointed a Commercial Manager to act on behalf of their interests in the shape of local PR and Marketing guru, Patricia Heaney of I Am Digital Group.
The role will see Patricia and her team take on a number of duties in a bid to raise the side’s profile, in this, its centenary year.
The Ballyholland native and Managing Director of the up-and-coming marketing consultancy is delighted to be on board, on what she concedes in one of the companies most exciting projects to date.
“As a Newry businesswoman, it is a very proud moment for me and for all involved at I Am Digital Group to take on this role with our hometown club”, said the 29-year-old.
“After four years of operating under the I Am Social Media moniker, the decision to rebrand to I Am Digital Group came in the wake of adding a number of diverse services to our offering and securing a role like this one at Newry City AFC is a prime example of the direction we want to take the business in”.
Specialising in brand development, I Am Digital Group provides start-up and established businesses with marketing and business consultancy solutions designed to maximise client acquisition opportunities and generate sales.
Now offering a range of services from website design and content creation to event management and business consultancy, the Newry based firm services clients in the Irish Republic, the UK mainland and as far afield as the USA, as well as many local enterprises.
Patricia, whose own personal expertise are in event management, is certainly no stranger to the cut and thrust of coordinating shindigs. The driving force behind the annual beauty and fashion bash, Frockin’ Fabulous, one of her main responsibilities will be to head up the organisation of events to mark the club’s centenary.
“Our remit is to do everything we can to promote what has been one of the regions most recognisable sporting institutions over the past 100 years.”
“We will be working in conjunction with sitting PRO Laura Hillen to optimise the club’s engagement on social media, keeping followers informed of the latest news and events emanating from the Showgrounds, whilst also highlighting special offers on merchandise and both corporate and casual matchday packages throughout the season.”
“With sponsorship to be renewed throughout the incoming season and the possibility of someone coming on board to add their business name to Newry City AFC Youth Academy and what will always remain The Showgrounds, we will also be at the coalface in so far as driving new commercial opportunities for the club.”
“Liasing with local businesses will be the core of our responsibilities in the hope of striking up mutually beneficial partnerships.”
The link-up has been met with enthusiasm by City Chairman, Martin McLaughlin, who said Patricia and her team have “an enormous part” to play.
“As Newry City AFC move into our centenary season, we have ambitions to make our way back to the Irish Premiership at the first opportunity.”
“Having tasted life back at the top of the Irish game last season, we are in no doubt that it’s where a club of this stature, with such a rich history and fanatical support, belong.”
“As we progress on our journey, our capacity has increased accordingly and, to that end, we as a club have taken the decision to appoint Commerical Managers, as we look to lay a professional foundation and public face for ourselves, at board level.”
“It’s a pleasure to announce that Patricia has accepted our invitation to fill this position and become the newest member of our squad. She has a wealth of experience in public relations and marketing and will play an enormous part in securing our future as a senior club.”
“Naturally, we wish her and her team every success in the new role and look forward to the positive impact she will make”.
And the first-team manager echoed those sentiments, believing that Patricia’s input will help take Newry City to a higher plain.
“I’ve said it on numerous occasions”, said Mullen. “Our off field progress needs to catch up with that on the field.”
“The club have recognised this and bringing in someone with the expertise that Patricia brings can only be good for that progress. Her experience and knowledge in the area will help to take the club to a level of commercial capability which is badly needed.”
“There are numerous opprortunities for people to get on board at the club and I have every faith that Patricia will be successful in forging new links, both locally and throughout the province.”
