Senior Men
Our senior men finished their league campaign last Wednesday with a disappointing home defeat against Tir na nÓg, 1 – 14 to 0 – 7.
It was a fairly evenly matched opening to the game with the sides three points apiece in the first fifteen minutes, Greg McCabe, Kristian Magill and Ryan McCabe getting the Shane’s scores. Tir na nÓg then went ahead for first time with their fourth point and they quickly followed this up with the only goal of the game to now lead by four with Greg McCabe replying for the home side with pointed free. Tir na nÓg dominated the rest of the first-half and outscored the Shane’s four points to one, with Greg McCabe again getting the Shane’s score.

The away side continued to play the better football during the second period and restricted the Shane’s to just a further points, courtesy of Micheál Brady and Cormac Feely, whilst adding a further six to their total to run out comfortable winners.
Despite this defeat the Shane’s maintained their place in Intermediate Division 1A courtesy of their better head to head performances against Wolfe Tones during the year.
Next up for the lads is the championship and following Friday night’s draw they have been placed in a group alongside Eire Óg, Grange and Clan na Gael, with the fixtures scheduled as follows:
Away to Eire Óg: Sunday 11 August @ 6.00pm
Home to Grange: Saturday 17 August @ 7.00pm
Away to Clan na Gael: Sunday 25 August @ TBC
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies are scheduled to be at home against Lisummon in the championship on Saturday 17 August but there is a potential fixture clash at the moment with our senior men also scheduled to play at home on that date at the same time. If Armagh Senior ladies lose to Mayo in their upcoming fixture then the Shane’s senior ladies’ game against Lisummon remains as 17 August, however if Armagh win and go on to the semi-final on 25 August, then our senior ladies championship game moves forward to 14 August.
U16 Boys
Our U16 boy’s amalgamation of Patrick Rankins were involved in a high scoring encounter with Tullysaran on Thursday evening in Camlough. With less than fifteen minutes remaining in the game the Rankins trailed by nine points but they finished the game the stronger side but just couldn’t make up the gap, eventually losing out by four points, 5 – 14 to 4 – 13.
U14 Boys
The Patrick Rankins U14 boys kept their push for the league title well on course following a comprehensive win over Culloville on Tuesday evening. Played in Poyntzpass, the young Rankins hit the front in the opening minutes and they went on to totally dominate the game, playing some brilliant football to claim the all-important win. Next up is a game away to Dromintee on Tuesday evening.
U12 Girls
Our U12 girls were fine form last Tuesday evening against Carrickcruppen. The Shane’s were on the front foot right from the off and they played some brilliant football throughout the game to run out deserving and comprehensive winners.
Good Luck
Everyone at the club would like to wish our senior footballer Kristian Magill and his girlfriend Chelsea Graham as they head off to their teaching jobs in China and the next chapter of their lives.
Well Done
Well done to our former player Michael Smith who was placed as the 26th Fittest Man in the World following his participation in the World Cross Fit games at the weekend. A brilliant performance from a great young man……maith thú Michael.
Tidy Club Grounds
Whilst it is great to see everyone spending the long evenings enjoying our club facilities, we would ask that people use the numerous bins dotted around the club to dispose of their rubbish. We want to keep our grounds clean, safe and tidy for all and would greatly appreciate everyone’s cooperation with this.
Lotto
Last week’s winning lotto numbers were 1, 16, 26 & 31. There were no jackpot winners and 1 x lucky dip winner. The lotto jackpot now stands at an impressive £4,150.
Condolences
Everyone at the club would like to offer their sympathies to the family of Alice Farrell who passed away recently. Alice was the 96 year old aunt of our senior men’s manager Aidan Farrell. The club also extends its sympathies to family of local business man Brian Conlon who, along with his company First Derivatives, have been good friends and supporters of the club over the past few years.
May they both rest in peace.
MICHAEL FEARON & KEVIN MARRON CARLINGFORD 5K
On a calm and warm Friday evening, 7 Newry AC athletes attended the annual 5k in Carlingford. This is a popular race with over 500 taking part. The course is flat and fast thus producing a highly competitive field with clubs from all over Ireland taking part.
Lee Maginnis was first over the line for Newry AC and was pleased with his sub 18 time. John, Andrew and Hughie all followed in pretty close to each other and all pleased with their performances. Sarah Jane, Meadow and Anna all had great runs with Meadow also picking up the prize for third.

Results:Lee Maginnis 17:48; John McCaffrey 18:07; Andrew Knapton 18:27; Hughie Mackin 18:39; Sarah Jane Beattie 21:14; Meadow McCauley 21:24 (3rd U17);

SGR Robbie Marsh surpassed himself once again by taking part in the Seven Sisters Skyline two day Marathon on Saturday and Sunday.
This two day event saw Robbie run with the finest elite mountain runners from across europe and around the World in Ireland’s first Skyline event on an
amazing Wild course in Donegal. Day one saw Robbie take on the 26km Sky Challenge a 2,100m ascent and gave Robbie a feel for what was to come with day 2 as he took on the 50km Skyline a massive 4,000m ascent from Mackoght Mountain to Errigal Mountain Commonly known as the “Seven Sisters”, each of the seven mountains have their own gaelic names of Errigal (751 m), Mackoght a.k.a. Little Errigal (555 m), Aghla More (584 m), Ardloughnabrackbaddy (603 m), Aghla Beg (564 m), Crocknalaragagh (471 m) and Muckish (666 m). What these mountains may lack in Altitude, I guarantee you they more than make up with their Attitude !!. Robbie not only tackled 2 days of mountain running but with amazing times in both events coming in 05:37:01 in the 26km Sky Challenge and 13:02:39 in the 50km Skyline. The 2019 M. Donnelly GAA All-Ireland Poc Fada Finals take place this weekend on the Cooley Mountains with Gareth Johnston representing Down in the Senior Hurling category.
The competition was first held in 1960 and following a short hiatus from 1970-1980, it returned in 1981 and has been ever-present on the national calendar since.
The unique Gaelic Games contest promises to be a great day of sport, and speaking at today’s draw John Horan said: “I welcome this year’s staging of the Poc Fada competition for 2019 and wish all the competitors well in what must be one of the most unique competitions in our stable.
“Few of our events encapsulate the history of the game in the way that the Poc Fada does and the route the players and followers will take over the Annaverna Mountain is nothing short of spectacular.

“A special word of thanks to the organising committee and to our sponsor and partner Martin Donnelly for his going support.”
Speaking about this year’s Finals, Uachtarán an Cumann Camógaíochta Kathleen Woods said: “The August Bank Holiday weekend is always a fantastic occasion on the Cooley Peninsula when we witness the wonderful spectacle which is the Poc Fada Finals. This is a unique and exciting competition which showcases some of the key skills of our games and I am very much looking forward to another thrilling competition this year.”
Defending senior hurling champion, Cillian Kiely of Offaly, puts his crown on the line against a high calibre field that includes his brother, Cathal, and the M. Donnelly picks, Cork’s Patrick Horgan and Poc Fada veteran Brendan Cummins. The Kielys had dominated the under 16 competition in recent times and will be hoping that the trend continues in the senior competition for years to come.
Susan Earner of Galway also returns to defend the Senior titles she captured in 2017 and 2018.
The under 16 hurling competition will have a new name on the trophy after Kyle Shelly won the trophy in 2018. Oisín Marley returns to the mountain having competed in last year’s All-Ireland Final.
The under 16 Camogie competition will be contested by competitors from Antrim, Cork, Dublin and Galway and will also see a new champion crowned.
The M. Donnelly GAA All-Ireland Final Proceedings will get under way at 11am on Annaverna Mountain, Ravensdale, Co. Louth on Saturday, August 3rd.
