Don't mix your kippers with your "fags"
Frontier Sentinel 30th October 1915
The following letter has been received from their son, Albert, who is serving in the Royal Garrison Artillery, France, by Mr and Mrs Baxter, who reside at Upper Water Street, Newry: -
Just a line in answer to your most welcome letter. Well I just received the parcel yesterday, and am sorry I could not write sooner, as we have been very busy, as you will see by the papers later on.

The kippers were a bit strong but we enjoyed them very much, also the herrings were lovely, but the “fags” were a bit soaked with the fish. We are having proper winter weather at present, and it is very cold and wet. I don’t think we will be very long with this lot now, unless Germany has something new to give us.
I saw young Monypenny out here. He was going home then. The boats were stopped. It was hard lines on him. Of course he had to wait for the attack, and I don’t know if he came out of it, or not, as I haven’t seen him since. I suppose a lot of Newry chaps have been home from here on leave.
I do see M Williams from Tinker Hill, very often. He was home for a while. I must now draw to a close. Hope you are all in the best of health, as I am at present.
(Sergeant Monypenny, who has been mentioned in the foregoing communication, has since arrived in Newry.)
