Newry Police are again are reminding the public that when you leave your car unattended you shouldn't leave valuables in it, or have anything on view that might be of interest to thieves.
The reminder comes following thefts from vehicles at Slieve Gullion Forest Park and Forkill Road, Newry. On Thursday, 31 October, between 2pm and 2.30pm four vehicles were broken into at the Forest Park and an ipad and sum of cash taken. A blue Honda Accord car with a Southern registration is believed to be involved in these thefts.
A short time later another vehicle was broken into in the car parlk of supermarket premises on Forkhill Road, Newry. An orange and white Sthil consaw was taken.
Police are appealing to anyone with information in relation to these incidents to contact them in Newry on 0845 600 8000.
There have been a number of thefts from vehicles in recent weeks and police are asking the public to take a few simple steps to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of this type of crime.
Thieves are opportunistic. Don't make it easy for them - remove all valuables, such as handbags, wallets, CD players, laptops, Sat Navs and phones from view. Lock valuable items in the boot and remove the face plate from your in-car stereo system. In a number of these incidents the thief is going straight for the glove box so avoid storing your valuables here - where possible, keep your wallet, purse, cash or phone on your person.
Ensure your vehicle is locked and all windows and sun roofs secure. Improving your car’s security features such as alarms, prominent VIN number markings, immobilisers and tracking devices can also help protect your vehicle.
It only takes a matter of seconds to break into a car so it is vitally important that the public promptly report any suspicious activity they notice near vehicles or when a car alarm has been activated. This will help to deter and help us detect those involved in this type of crime.

Police in Newry have launched an appeal for a missing person. The family of 31 year old Newry man Peter Quigley are becoming increasingly concerned for his whereabouts.
Peter was reported missing on Thursday 7th November by his family.
Peter is described as being 5'8" tall, of medium build with dirty fair hair and blue coloured eyes. Peter is believed to have been seen in the Belfast area on Wednesday 30th October and Peter speaks with a strong London accent.
Peter or anyone who knows of his whereabouts is asked to make contact with his family or with police in Newry on 0845 600 8000.

Local Police are appealing for information on two separate assaults in the Newry area.
The first is a reported assault outside licensed premises in the Forkhill Road area in the early hours of Saturday 9th November.
Around 1.15am a taxi driver was assaulted by a man who was described as being around 30 years old, medium/heavy build with short hair and was wearing a pink/purple shirt and jeans. He was accompanied by another man and a woman and it is believed that all three were picked up by a different taxi firm a short time after the assault and taken to the Dornan's Hill area of Newry. The taxi driver sustained cuts and bruising to his body and head.
A second assault was reported in the Kildare Street area in the early hours of Monday 11th November. The assault is believed to have taken place at around 12.15am near licensed premises when a man was attacked by two males. The man was taken to hospital to be treated for a suspected fractured jaw.

Police in Newry have charged a 17 year old male with disorderly offences.
Police were on patrol when they apprehended two males who were disorderly and under the influence of alcohol in John Mitchell Place shortly after midnight on Friday, 1 November.
The 17 year old male was arrested for disorderly behaviour, assault on police and resisting police. He was further arrested for criminal damage to a police vehicle and was subsequently charged to appear before Newry Youth Court on 15 November.
As is normal procedure the charges will be reviewed by the PPS.
A 16 year old male was also arrested for possession of Class A drugs and disorderly behaviour. He was released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police have charged a 44 year old man with drugs offences.
Officers conducted a search of a house in the Drumgullion Avenue of Newry on Tuesday, 5 November and recovered five cannabis plants.
The man was arrested and charged with possession of Class B drugs, possession of Class B drugs with intent to supply and cultivating cannabis to appear before Newry Magistrates’ Court on 27 November.

Following a burglary at a convenience store on Main Street, Bessbrook in the early hours of this morning (Thursday) Police have arrested Five people during a follow up patrol.
Police received a report of the burglary at the store at 4.31am. Two till trays and a sum of cash were taken. It was reported that the perpetrators made off in a red coloured car.
Officers on patrol around Newry and Mourne were made aware of the incident and police patrolling First Avenue observed a red Volkswagen Golf with its boot open at 4.57am. On closer inspection police observed a number of tools in the boot and front passenger footwell.
The front door of a nearby house was open and officers observed a male and female counting money on the kitchen table. Police entered the house and found two till trays which were identified as the trays taken in the burglary.
A search of the house was conducted and police recovered cash, power tools, a quantity of sweets and biscuits, cigars and regiatration plates.
A 17 year old male, 18 year old female, 22 year old male, 23 year old male and 31 year old male were arrested on suspicion of burglary and handling stolen goods. They are currently assisting police with their enquiries.
Newry and Mourne Area Commander, Chief Inspector Davy Beck said: "I would like to praise the swift and quick thinking actions of my officers which resulted in five arrests and the recovery of cash stolen during the burglary.
Davy concluded "This is once again proof of our commitment to making Newry and Mourne a safer place for everyone to live, work and visit."

Following on from yesterday morning's burglary in Bessbrook Police in Newry have charged five people with burglary offences at Newry Magistrates Court this morning.
A 17 year old male, 18 year old female, 22 year old male, 23 year old male and 31 year old male have been charged with burglary, attempted burglary, possession of criminal property, taking a motor vehicle without authority and theft in relation to incidents at Main Street, Bessbrook, Forkhill Road, Newry and Mowhan Road, Armagh on Thursday, 14 November.
The charges will be reviewed by the PPS.

Police have arrested two people in Dungannon after counterfeit notes were passed at businesses in Newry.
On Saturday, 9 November, police received a report of counterfeit £20 Ulster Bank notes being passed by a male customer at a toy store in Damolly Retail Park. Police obtained the registration of the vehicle the male was travelling in and attended the home of the last registered owner.
A 42 year old female and 43 year old male were arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation, possession of counterfeit currency and tendering couterfeit currency.
A number of items and notes believed to be counterfeit were seized during the search of a house in Dungannon.
The male and female were later released on bail pending further enquiries.

Newry Police have noted a decrease in criminal damage and antisocial behaviour incidents over this years Halloween period.
Criminal damage dropped by 12 per cent (down three incidents from 25 to 22) during Halloween week, compared to the same period last year and antisocial behaviour decreased by 8.9 per cent (a decrease of eight incidents from 90 to 82).
Misuse of fireworks increased slightly, from 33 incidents last year to 40 in 2013.
Newry and Mourne Area Commander, Chief Inspector Davy Beck said: "I am delighted to see the decrease in criminal damage and antisocial behaviour and would like to thank our partner agencies and the local community for their support over the Halloween period, I know how hard many community groups have worked to make Halloween a positive family event and I acknowledge that work and vision.
"We worked closely with our partner agencies and community groups to raise awareness of the consequences of becoming involved in antisocial behaviour, to provide diversionary activites for young people and to enforce the law.
There was an increase in incidents concerning the misuse of fireworks and Chief Inspector Beck commented "I believe this is attributable to the proactive actions of my officers in seizing illegal fireworks and an increase in information from the local community.
"We will continue to build on this partnership approach and work on driving down incidents of antisocial behaviour."
