Newry AC's Esther Dickson gave an utterly dominant display in the savage hills around Kilbroney Park, to win the second NIMRA race of 2018 on Saturday.

Conditions were bright and sunny, apart from round the back of the mountain in the shadows, where one poor Marshal was billeted for the duration, in the biting cold at check-point 3!
Such was Esther's performance, 1:25.58, that she would have been 10th in the mens race. It is no wonder that the popular lady, a local chicken farmer and mother of three, was totally unchalleged. Two out of two at this early stage of the mountain running season. Kookie O'Hagan her coach could not have asked for much more!
It was a triple delight for Kookie. He coaches Seamus Lynch, the athlete who won the mens race in 1:10.58, this was a closer result, with Willie McKee (Mourne Runners) only 15 seconds behind. And Paul Le Blanc (Newry AC), an old friend of Kookie, won the MV55 category with a time of 1:27.47.
Adding to the success stalwart, Cathal McGreevy was 3rd MV50. Ronan Mynes was 4th MV45 and Noel Carr was 10th MV40.
The club also had cause for celebration with Meadow McCauley running a time of 2:29:93 for 800m in the Irish Life National Juvenile Championships in Athlone at the weekend, taking nearly 3 seconds off the time she ran a month ago.

Under 16
Last Saturday afternoon our Under 16 squad travelled to Belfast to take on Bredagh in our first away match. This was a highly entertaining game played in in excellent conditions. Bredagh had the better of the scoring in the first half and held an 0-8 to 0-3 lay the end of that period. Our young Craobh Rua hurlers upped their game for the second half and soon both teams were on level scores. We finished the stronger and managed to go in front, a lead which we never relinquished. Final score Craobh Rua 2-10, Bredagh 1-12.
This was a committed, skilful and focused performance by all. The game was played in a tough but sporting manner and we thank Bredagh for their hospitality.

Newry 1’s 3-1 North Down 1’s
Newry hosted league leaders North Down on Saturday in a must win match for the home side. Having not played for a couple of weeks Newry were rusty with passes going astray in the early exchanges. However as the half wore on they grew into the game and were staring to make in roads into the North Down defence. David England put Newry one up from a short corner with 20minutes gone, and it was so nearly two when he rattled the post from a another short corner soon after. North did manage to win a couple of corners themselves but they were dealt with well by the Newry defence.

In the second half the visitors came flying out of the traps in search of their equaliser but were unable to create any opportunities of note. Newry went two up through another well worked short corner which Kris Fletcher flicked Home from a tight angle. Lindsey Beck in the Newry goals pull off a sublime save from a reverse stick shot to keep Newry’s 2 goal advantage intact. The home side slowed the game down now as they started to manage the game well but did fire through the gears again with 10 minutes remaining when David England got his second of the game and Newry’s third. With 4 minutes reaming North Down did pull back a consolation goal but it was too little too late as Newry took all three points.
Team: L. Beck, D. England, C. Henning, J.Greer, A. Baird, R. Irwin, N. Davenport, N. McKnight, C. McKnight, M. Russell, K. Fletcher, A. Irwin, K. McWilliams, D. Andrews
Newry Ladies through to the Final!
On Saturday 24th March 2018, Newry Ladies 1st XI travelled away to Cookstown High to play Cookstown Ladies 2nd XI in the semi-final of the Ulster Minor Trophy. Newry started sluggishly and took their time to get into the game, centre mid Rachel Lockhart filtered the ball through to right wing Stephanie Smart who drove up into the Cookstown corner only to be met by a strong defence. Cookstown seized possession of the ball, were awarded a penalty corner within the first ten minutes and went into a one nil lead. Newry kept their heads up and ten minutes later left back Victoria Lewis slipped the ball through to Shannen Robinson on the left wing who drove the ball up into the Cookstown circle. Robinson flicked the ball across to the centre forward Laverne Inns who scooped an equaliser into the Cookstown net. Both sides fought hard for the remainder of the first half and just before the half-time whistle Robinson secured a second goal for Newry.
Within the first two minutes of the second half Cookstown succeeded in scoring from a short corner putting both teams on an even keel. Newry narrowly missed a couple of chances in the next ten minutes however right wing Aimee Magowan weaved in and out of the Cookstown defence into the circle securing a penalty corner for Newry. Robinson fired the ball across to Magowan who deflected the ball past the keeper putting Newry into a 3 – 2 lead. Newry kept the pressure up with sweeper Laura Simpson driving the ball through Cookstown forwards and mids to left mid Gayle Davidson who fired the ball across to Magowan and with such a fast reverse hit at the keeper, Cookstown sweeper could not stop the ball and scored an own goal. Newry remained strong and confident with left mid Claire Gamble dodging through the Cookstown defence and after being awarded another penalty corner this enabled Captain Kathryn Baird to deflect the ball into the Cookstown goal to secure a fifth goal. Cookstown fought back hard but with Newry’s strong defence, they were kept out of the circle on numerous occasions by the swift footwork of goalie, Collette Lambe and superb clearance of centre back Abbie Blakely. With one minute to go, right back Becky Murdock walloped the ball into the circle for Inns to finish the sixth and final goal for Newry. Newry are ecstatic to be through to the final of Minor Cup where they will play Coleraine. Player of the match goes to Aimee Magowan.
Final score Newry Olympic 6 –v- Cookstown 2
Team: K Baird (Captain), C Lambe, (goals), A Blakely, C Gamble, L Simpson, G Davidson, V Lewis, R Murdock, R Lockhart, S Robinson, L Inns, S Smart, A Magowan
While the headlines rightly belonged to Neil Johnston and Kerry O'Flagherty, Northern Ireland's newly crowned road 5K champions; further down the field, and in the associated 3K, Newry AC runners also excelled at Queen's (Belfast) on Wednesday the 21st of March.

Watched by their eagle-eyed coach, Kookie O'Hagan, Hughie Mackin and John McCaffrey did battle around the River Lagan bridges. Hughie, having quit work early at his Newry cement factory, could hardly be seen for dust as he stormed round the course in 17:58. John was just a few seconds back in 18:12.
Young Meadow McCauley was 10th Junior in the 3K with a time of 11:43. Sarahjane Beattie was next with 12:26 before Meadow's mum Joanne won the F40 age group in a time of 14:11.
The attention at Newry AC will now switch to The Fallows mountain race this weekend, at Kilbroney Park.

The long trip to the indoor athletics arena at Athlone last weekend was well worth it for Newry Athletic Club's Joanne McCauley who returned with a bronze in the long jump at the Irish Life Health Masters Indoor Championships.

Competing in the F40 category, she came back with an Irish veteran bronze medal in the long jump, leaping close to her best. The Kookie O'Hagan coached athlete becomes the first Newry AC athlete to medal in the field events at an Irish championship.
The mountain running season also got underway for Newry AC on Saturday, the venue being a wet and slippery Glenariff. Newry's Esther Dickson, last year's Hill and Dale champion, ran superbly to easily win the ladies race.
Cliftonville 1’s 1-3 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to CIYMS on Saturday in their latest league match against Cliftonville. Newry started very sluggishly turn the ball over very easily with poor and miss placed passes. Cliftonville forced a number of early short corners but were unable to take advantage of them with stand in keeper Josh Porter making a couple of good stops. As the half wore on Newry started to become more dominant pinning Cliftonville in their own half but as has been the story of the season so far for Newry, the chances created were wasted. It wasn’t until 5 minutes before half time that Newry finally got the break through from the unlikeliest of sources, Colin Henning flicking home high into the net from a short corner. Again right on the stroke of half time Henning fired home an identical short corner high into the net to give Newry a two nil advantage at the break, Henning had only previously scored once in his Newry career.

In the second half Newry dominated right from the whistle with Keith Mcwilliams going very close with a reverse stick shot only a matter of seconds into the half. Newry pressed further forward but again were wasting their chances. Cliftonville pulled one back with a quick break away to make it two one with still 20 minutes remaining. However Newry scored very quickly when again Henning was involved at the short corner when his shot was deflected in by Jeremy Greer. Newry continued to push forward but could not find another goal and with two minutes remaining Cliftonville were awarded a penalty stroke which Josh Porter did brilliantly to save and keeper the score at 3-1.
Team: Porter, D. England, C. Henning, J. Greer, A. Baird, N. Davenport, R. Irwin, N. McKnight, C. McKnight, K. McWilliams, A. Irwin, M. McCullough, K. McCombe
