Queens 1’s 1-3 Newry 1’s
Newry travelled to The Dub on Saturday to play Queens University on Saturday in the penultimate league game of the season. The Belfast Road men started well, learning from last week’s slow start and were quickly in the lead when Neil McKnight picked the ball up on the right hand side before firing a great ball across the circle to David England who took his time and found Kris Fletcher in the centre of the goal who showed composure to slow the ball home into the corner. Within a matter of minutes, it was two as Keith McWilliams picked the ball up in the circle and slipped it under the advancing keeper after a scramble in the circle. With 5 minutes to half time Newry made it 3 as Colin McKnight was the first to react after the Queens keeper saved the first shot, he latched onto the rebound and finished from the top of the D.

Queens came out all guns blazing in the second half as Newry sat back soaked up the pressure and then hit on the counter attack. The home side were seeing a lot of the ball but could not force any clear cut chances until after winning a short corner, Newry keeper Josh Porter pulled off a superb save from a drag flick. Newry could have increased their lead with Alex Irwin, Robert Irwin and Colin McKnight all missing chances with only the keeper to beat. Queens did manage to score a consolation goal with one minute remaining with a fierce strike from the right hand side of the circle. Newry Host Antrim on Tuesday night in their final game of the season.
Team: J.Porter, D. England, C. Henning, J. Greer, A. Baird, N. McKnight, R. Irwin, N. Davenport, C. McKnight, K. Fletcher, K. McWilliams, K. McCombe, A. Megaw

Senior Men
Our senior men made the short journey to Forkhill on Sunday for their second league game and with a strong wind blowing the length of the field it was always going to be a game of two halves, and so it proved. The Shane’s played with the wind at their backs in the opening period but it took them seven minutes to register the opening point with Kristian Magill slotting over a close range free and the same player followed this up shortly after with another well taken free. Forkhill replied with a pointed free of their own before a brilliant save from their keeper prevented an almost certain goal from the boot of David McCabe. An injury to Paul O’Rourke delayed the game by almost ten minutes but on the restart Connaire Mackin pointed to put the Shane’s two the good with Forkhill responding with their second point of the game. Points from Paul O’Rourke and Kristian Magill edged the Shane’s further ahead but Forkhill fired over their third point to keep them within touching distance. The sides swapped points ahead of the half-time break with Kristian Magill on target for the away side to leave the Shane’s leading by two at the interval, 0 – 6 to 0-4. However, the Camlough side should have been further in front as they shot a total of eleven wides during the opening thirty minutes.

Straight from the second-half throw-in Forkhill reduced the deficit to just one with a well taken score before a surging run from Eamon McCabe ended with the ball making its way to Ryan Quinn who made no mistake from close range, coolly slotting the ball to the Forkhill net. The sides then traded two points apiece with Greg McCabe and Kristian Magill on target for the Shane’s to keep them four in front. However, Forkhill then got a real grip on the contest and fired over six points in a row to see them lead by two heading going into the closing minutes before a Kristian Magill point left just the minimum between the sides with the game now injury time. From the resulting kick-out the Shane’s won possession and worked the ball to Connaire Mackin who fired over to the tie the game, to leave the final score: Shane O’Neill’s 1 – 10 Forkhill 0 – 13.
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies eventually opened their league campaign on Saturday night in Grange, after a couple of postponed games due to the weather. Playing without injured county senior trio, Aimee and Blaithin Mackin and Louise Kenny, Shanes still fielded a fairly young but experienced side.
Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half the Shane’s always looked dangerous going forward and managed to hit the net on five occasions. However, a succession of soft frees kept Grange within striking distance and left Shanes leading by six at half-time.
The second half was a very even affair with the Shane’s defending deep as the wind picked up and using clever counter attacks to keep in front. With time almost up and with the Shane’s holding a two-point lead, a Grange shot took a huge deflection into the net to put them one ahead before one final attack by the Shane’s saw an effort at equalizing fall agonisingly short.
In their first game of the season Shanes ladies will definitely feel it's a game that should have won but the positives of a good battling performance can be taken forward to the next game at home against Armagh Harps this Monday night, 16th April, at 7.00pm. Special mention must go to young goalkeeper Aoife Brady who made her senior debut and had a great game. Final score: Shane O’Neill’s 8 - 5 Grange 5 - 15.
The Shane’s team and scorers on the night: Aoife Brady, Orlagh McKenna, Emma Kenny, Caroline McMenamin, Hannah McMenamin, Cliodhna Sloan, Hayley Mackin, Orlaith McArdle, Kirsty Murphy, Ciara Jones (1 – 1), Moya Feehan (1 – 0), Jessica Watters, Aoibheann Jones (3 – 3), Sorcha McDonnell (3 – 1), Megan Hughes. Subs Paris Boswell, Sinead McDonnell, Tara Reel, Breenagh Maguire.

A Disability Sports Hub has been launched at Newry Leisure Centre by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Roisin Mulgrew.
Cllr Mulgrew welcomed pupils, parents, teachers and assistants from St Clare’s Abbey Primary School, St Mark’s Secondary School and Disability Sport NI to the Leisure Centre to see the facilities for themselves.
The Disability Sports Hub has a wide variety of disability sports equipment including accessible bikes, sports wheelchairs, Boccia sets and other specialist equipment which is to be shared throughout the district as required. It has been set up to help promote the development of Disability Sport throughout Newry, Mourne and Down.
Councillor Mulgrew said, “The Council is delighted to be part of this amazing initiative led by Disability Sport NI. The Disability Sports Hub ensures that Newry, Mourne and Down has a fantastic array of equipment to suit people with a variety of physical needs so that they may enjoy sport at its most challenging.”
She continued, “Disability Sport NI and the Department for Communities have to be congratulated for their investment and vision. The Council has also invested in this Hub and I am heartened to see the number of staff and volunteers who have trained in the use of the equipment with a view to facilitating Wheelie Active and Boccia sessions in all our centres. This is a very exciting opportunity for us all to work together and provide clubs and classes for people with additional needs so that they can improve their skills, health and wellbeing.”

Disability Sport NI Chief Executive, Mr Kevin O’Neill said, “The establishment of a Disability Sports Hub in all eleven of our district council areas is a real game changer for people with disabilities here. Disabled people are currently half as likely to participate in sport as non-disabled people and this initiative will make a huge difference in helping us get more people with disabilities active in every area of Northern Ireland.”
Sport NI Chairperson, Mr George Lucas added, “Sport NI warmly welcomes the launch of the new District Council Disability Sports Hub. These hubs will help support local people with disabilities to enjoy all the physical, mental and social benefits of participation in sport and physical activity. We look forward to continuing to work with Disability Sport NI, the Department for Communities and our other partners, to implement the ‘Active Living: No Limits’ Action Plan and deliver positive change to the social, recreational and sporting lives of people with disabilities across Northern Ireland.”
Through the District Council Disability Sports Hub Project, Disability Sport NI will be supporting the development of sustainable sports clubs including wheelchair basketball, goalball and multi-skills within each hub. The project will raise the visibility of disability sports opportunities and encourage more people with a disability to be active and be the best.
Fergus Devitt, Director of Active Communities at the Department for Communities said, “I am delighted that the Department is able to support the implementation of the disability sector’s ‘Active Living: No Limits’ Action Plan that seeks over the next five years to bring about positive change to the social, recreational and sporting life of people with disabilities.
“Our investment of £1m will increase opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sporting activities, to provide equipment for disability sports hubs in each council area and also to enable access to several watersports venues and activities.
“It is important that we maintain this impressive start to our collective implementation of the Action Plan, to ensure the continued positive experiences of involvement and inclusion and to promote not only recreational enjoyment of sporting activity but potentially the development of our paralympic champions for the future.”
For further information on any of the above activities for people with physical disabilities please contact ciara.lowe@nmandd.org.
Hill & Dales Series - Race 1 - Castlewellan
In a field of 283 competitors, 7 of Newry ACs finest athletes took on the Castlewellan Forest Park Race on Thursday evening. Weather conditions were perfect for the first race of the series. The Newry athletes all stuck pretty close to each other with the final result of Esther Dickson 38:47 26th (2nd Female/1st FO); Warren Cartmill 39:00 29th (2nd MV45); Paul LeBlanc 39:37 35th (2nd MV55); Rory Mulvaney 40:17 40th (14th MO); Ronan Mynes 44:07 93rd (10th MV45) & Kookie O’Hagan 63:15 4th MV60.
British Fell Running Championships- Mourne Highline Mountain Race
On Saturday, one brave Newry AC goat, Cathal McGreevy - took on the top class field of UK & Ireland runners in the heart of the Mournes. On a day that seemed fair, down at sea level told a different story in the Majestic Mournes. “Visibility was mush - from the start line right through”. Navigation skill would be needed on top of the physical and mental strength for the 15.3km 1300m Race.
The race started at Spelga and covered the main summits of Meelbeg, Meelmore, Slievenaglogh, Slieve Corragh & Comedagh. Comedagh. The race proved a real challenge to navigate in the ‘white out’ with runners having many unplanned detours but Cathal with a cool head stuck to the correct route and completed the course in 2:12:19, 131st out of a field of 284 runners. Well done Cathal.
Portadown 5k
On Sunday, Meadow McCauley left her familiar track surroundings and took to the roads of Portadown for a windy 5k race. The 15 year old ran a good strong race in some windy conditions and proudly lifted the 2nd Female Prize.

Athletics NI Senior Open Meet
On Sunday, Joanne McCauley travelled to the Mary Peters Track in Belfast. The wet and windy conditions did not deter Joanne and she lifted 3rd in the Long Jump, 3rd in 200 metres and 1st in High Jump. A perfect start to the outdoor season.
Dundalk 5K
Hughie Mackin is awaiting a decision from the appeals panel after he was left "choking and disorientated" on Saturday the 14th of April, when competing in a high profile 5K race in Dundalk. He immediately lodged a complaint with the race organisers after crossing the line in a time of 18:25!
"No sense in that," he stated. "I am used to coping with cement dust at my factory, but this was on a different scale!"
John McCaffrey, who blasted past Hughie in the final stages of the race, pleaded innocence. "I cannot be held responsible for the state of the road," he responded. "Thanks to Hughie for pacing me round."
John ran a time of 18:20 with Sarah Jane Beattie wrapping things up for Newry AC with 21:37.
Slieve Gullion mountain race on Saturday was a breakthrough event for Newry AC. New signing Maurice Harte won, by a margin of one second from his Newcastle AC rival!
Esther Dickson, completed the historic double by finishing first lady, and was so strong that she beat most of the men, crossing the line in 5th place overall. Paul Le Blanc was 6th, which was enough to win his age category.

Newry AC had plenty of finishers in the top ten, essential to challenge for team honours. A huge achievement for the club who will now want to carry this momentum forward into the Hill and Dale series which starts this week.
Cathal Mcgreevy, on the same day, competed in the Cooley Legends half marathon and finished a highly credible 13th.
A couple of days beforehand, Bangor saw the opening track and field event. Competing over slightly unusual distances, and usual cold wind, Joanne McCauley was fastest F40 in the 150m with 23 sec. Her daughter Meadow ran 1:56 over 600m while Lee Maginnis crossed the line in 1:39. Finally, in the long jump, youth had to give way to experience as Joanne pipped Meadow by 2cms!
Newry 1’s 4-7 NICS 1’s
Newry hosted Civil Service on Saturday in a must win game if they wanted to pip North Down to the number one spot. The home side did not start well and found themselves two down with only twenty minutes gone. However they did manage to turn it around with Mathew Russell scoring to pull one back when Kris Fletcher found him free in the centre of the circle. David Andrews got Newry’s second as he slotted home to even the scores. Newry managed to take the lead just before half time with Kyle McCombe plucking the ball out of the air before rifling home a low reverse stick shot.

It looked to be good for Newry at the break. Civil Service flew out of the traps in the second half, getting back on level terms with only 5 minutes played. Newry got another with Colin McKnight finishing from a short corner. The visitors then ran riot as they scored 3 goals in quick succession as Newry’s concentration and marking disappeared. This now means Newry can only finish second in the league.
Team: Beck, C. Henning, D. England, A. Baird, J. Greer, C. McKnight, N. McKnight, R. Irwin, M. Russell, K. Fletcher, K. McKombe, K. McWilliams, D. Andrews
Newry Olympic Ladies 0 – Rainey 2
On Saturday 7th April 2018, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI travelled to Meadowbank Indoor Hockey Arena, Magherafelt to play Rainey 3rds in the Ulster Junior 8A Hockey league. Newry, with their team of 12, won the toss and chose pass back against 16 player strong Rainey. For the first twenty minutes both teams fought hard and players were all tightly marked on both sides. Newry were first to secure a corner with left wing Shannen Robinson smashing the ball towards the goal which was saved by the swift action of the Rainey keeper. Newry kept possession and were awarded another corner which was quickly executed by centre back Diane McMinn-Johnston but was again foiled by the Rainey keeper. Captain Kathryn Baird took the next corner, slapping the ball at the Rainey goal but was also obstructed by the keeper. Rainey were quick to retaliate themselves, securing a corner against Newry but due to the speed of sweeper Laura Simpson, Rainey failed to get a shot on goal. At the end of the first half the score was nil all.
During the second half Newry changed their game play in order to strengthen their midfield to five leaving their centre forward Laverne Inns high in the Rainey circle who was awarded the first corner of the second half but was blocked by Rainey feet.. Sweeper Laura Simpson took the following corner but was unfortunately unable to rattle the Rainey defense. Rainey used their five subs to roll on roll off players keeping the pace of the game fast and fresh and five minutes before the final whistle Rainey struck a one nil lead by scoring into the right hand corner of the Newry goal. Rainey kept Newry under immense pressure trying to score but goal keeper Collette Lambe kept the goal covered and right back Becky Murdock was quick to tackle and clear the ball. However during the final minute Rainey found themselves once again in the Newry circle and amongst a melee of shots secured a two nil lead at just before the full time whistle.
Newry remain in the third position with four games in hand and next week are away to Newcastle.
Team: K Baird (Captain), C Lambe, (goals), D McMinn-Johnston, L Simpson, G Davidson, V Lewis, R Murdock, A Murphy, K McCullough, S Robinson, L Inns, S Smart.
Senior Men
Our senior men began their 2018 league campaign with a narrow one point away defeat to Eire Óg on Sunday afternoon, 1 – 13 to 1 - 12. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Camlough but with the pitch being waterlogged the game was switched to Craigavon.
The Shane’s registered the first point with David McCabe firing over in the opening minute but Eire Óg hit the next four points to lead by three with Neil Paul Lennon replying for the Shane’s to reduce the deficit to two. The sides then swapped pointed frees with David McCabe on target for the away side before another Neil Paul Lennon had the Shane’s back to within one. A sixth Eire Óg point edged them further ahead but a free from Kristian Magill and a third point from Neil Paul Lennon had the Camlough side back on level terms. A pointed free apiece kept the sides level pegging, Kristian Magill, tapping over for the Shanes before Eire Óg fired in the first goal of the contest and they followed this up with two quick-fire points to lead by five at the break, 1 – 9 to 0 – 7.
Early second-half points from David McCabe and Eamon McCabe had the Shane’s back to within three and the sides were soon level when team captain Micheál Brady rifled the ball to the back of the Eire Óg net. The Shane’s couldn’t build on their momentum and in fact it was Eire Óg who had the better of the next ten minutes, slotting over three unanswered points, two from frees, to regain the initiative. However, the Shane’s weren’t giving up easy and they piled on the pressure to score three in a row themselves to tie the game again heading into the final stages, David McCabe (2) and Kristian Magill (1) getting the scores but Eire Óg got the winning score in injury time to claim the victory by a single point, 1 – 13 to 1 – 12.
