Senior Men
Our senior men had no game over the past seven days but they return to action on Wednesday evening away to Crossmaglen II’s.
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies put in a great performance away Dromintee on Saturday evening before eventually losing out by four points, 4 – 13 to 4 – 9.
The game began in the middle of a torrential downpour but to their credit both sides coped well with the conditions and midway through the opening half they were all-square at 1 – 2 apiece with Aimee Mackin scoring a goal and a point, with the other Shane’s point coming from Aoibheann Jones. Dromintee then scored two goals and a point in quick succession to lead by seven before a Sorcha McDonnell goal reduced the deficit to four but Dromintee tagged on another three points in a row to regain their seven-point. Late first-half points from Sorcha McDonnell and Aimee Mackin saw the Shane’s trail by five at the break, 3 – 6 to 2 – 4.
An early second-half point from Aimee Mackin had the Shane’s back to within four and this was reduced to just one when Aimee Mackin powered home a great goal. Another Dromintee point was quickly cancelled by Aimee Mackin before Aoibheann Jones brought the Shane’s level with a well taken point. However, it was Dromintee who had the better of the next fifteen minutes and scored six points in a row to put them firmly in control but the Shane’s girls weren’t finished just yet and a goal and two points from Aimee Mackin got them back to within one. They were now pushing all out for the equaliser but it was Dromintee who broke away to score a late goal and seal their win on a score-line of 4 – 13 to 4 – 9.

Despite their narrow defeat the girls can take great heart from their performance especially some of the younger girls who have made the step up to senior football, including Aoife Brady, Niamh Carragher and Sinead McDonnell.
The ladies potentially have a game against Clann Eireann this week but it is still to be confirmed – please keep an eye on social media for confirmation.
Minor Boys
Our minor boys’ amalgamation of Patrick Rankins suffered a narrow one-point defeat to Middletown last Monday, 0 – 11 to 1 – 7 but in fairness if they have had their shooting boots on they would have won the game. They return to action this Monday evening with an away game against Sarsfields.
Minor Girls
Our minor ladies were scheduled to play Naomh Labhaoise on Thursday night but the game was called off as Naomh Labhaoise couldn’t field a team and the Shane’s were awarded the points. It is a few weeks until their next game so it is hoped to arrange challenge games to make sure the minor players are getting enough games.
U16 Girls
Our U16 girls kept their recent run of good form going with an excellent home win over Silverbridge last Wednesday night.
U14 Boys
Our U14 boys’ amalgamation were involved in high scoring game against Cullyhanna last Tuesday evening but they ultimately fell to a defeat on a score-line of 3 – 13 to 4 – 4. They return to action this Tuesday evening away to Dromintee.
U14 Girls
Our U14 girls have an away game against Granemore on Thursday and training for the girls continues on Tuesday at the field from 6.00pm – 7.30pm and all girls are asked to be in attendance.
U12 Boys
Our U12 boys got their season off to great start on Saturday with a brilliant 5 – 14 to 2 – 9 win over O’Hanlon’s Poyntzpass. They young Shane’s have been training hard over the past few weeks and fully deserved their win on Saturday and next up is a game against Mullaghbawn.
U12 Girls
Our U12 girls were in action on Sunday evening away to Dromintee but at the time of going to press the result was unknown. Training for the U12 girls continues as normal on Tuesday and Thursday this week.
U10s
Our U10 footballers were in action last Wednesday evening away to O’Hanlon’s Poyntzpass. The young Shane’s produced some fine football with plenty of good to match their excellent display. Well done to both teams for providing a great game. Training continues as normal this week.
U8s (P3 & P4 Boys and Girls)
Well done to our U8’s had a challenge game against O’Hanlon’s Poyntzpass on Wednesday evening. Both teams played some great football and credit must go to all the young boys and girls. U8 training for both boys and girls takes place every Friday evening at the field from 6.30pm – 7.30pm and all boys and girls at this age group are welcome to come along.

Best wishes also to another senior ladies’ footballer Louise Kenny who is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming weeks on her injured knee. We also hope to see our underage footballer Keegan Grant return to action shortly following his nasty knee injury.

U18
Due to the Council event to recognise last years Under 16 team, there will be no minor hurling League game this Wednesday night. Management will keep the panel informed of upcoming games and training.
Under 16
Our under 16 team got this years Armagh League up and running when the faced Armagh city side Cuchullain's. The game was played in good spirits with both sets of players showing off some excellent hurling skills. The Cuchullain's forwards ability to take their scores was the telling factor in a game that ebbed too and fro. Cuan Mhuire work rate couldn't be faulted. The final score saw the Armagh city side win by a 2-16 to 3-02 score line.
Craobh Rua under 16 team will travel to Portaferry on Sunday the 6th of May to face them in the league
Under 14
Craobh Rua Under 14 team fell to Ballygalget in their Down Hurling League game. The match played at St Pauls was a tough and tight encounter. The superior finishing of the Ballygalget forward line eventually saw them claim an 8.6 to 3.3 victory.
This Monday night we travel to Killeavy and on Friday night our Under 14 team make the trip to Ballycran.
Under 12
Our young hurlers played a very entertaining game against Seán Treacy's Lurgan. It was a mighty effort by the entire panel and despite loosing the game, there were many positives to take from it. This Thursday Craobh Rua Under 12 team will travel to Armagh to take on Cuchullains.
Any parent or guardian who wishes to get involved in helping out with various duties involved with our Under 12 team such as First Aid, Driving, Coaching and Kit Person, please feel free to contact U12 coach Labhrás Bradley.
Rua Ógs
Craobh Rua young hurlers had an enjoyable day at the Hurling Blitz in Middletown. It was the first Armagh Hurling Blitz for the season and has set a good standard. Newry AC hit the Roads, Track & Mountains in Dublin, Dundalk, Belfast & Rostrevor
Another busy race week was had by the Newry AC Squad.
Dublin Track Meet
Hughie Mackin and Sarah Jane Beattie made the journey down to Dublin for their first outdoor Track Meet. Under the watchful instruction of Coach Kookie O’Hagan, both athletes had good 800m races in windy, wet and cool conditions and in the presence of all the major Dublin/Dundalk area clubs. Sarah Jane Beattie recording 2:40 and Hughie Mackin 2:20. A good benchmark for the start of the outdoor track season training.

Dundalk 10k
Dundalk was the destination for the popular 10k race for athlete John McCaffrey. In very blustery conditions, John had a strong race and did not disappoint his club with a 38:34 time and 29th Overall position (21st in Male Open Category) out of race field of 755.
Hill & Dales Series Race 3
Newry AC despatched 7 athletes off to Slieve Martin in Kilbroney Park. The weather was favourable for the unforgiving terrain, 1500 feet ascent and the drastic downhill descent.
Keiron Kelly had a fantastic race staying in the top 3 pack on the tough ascent with Seamus Lynch and Willie McKee. However, on the tricky descent he was passed by Timothy Johnston and David Hicks to complete the race in a fabulous 5th place and time of 34:56 and collecting 1st MV45.
Esther Dickson had another great run in the series to take 1st Female (24th Overall) in a time of 40:14, 2 minutes clear of 2nd female Sarah Graham. Fellow club runners, Paul LeBlanc 26th (40:14 2nd MV55) / Rory Mulvaney 46th (43:27 16th MO) / Ronan Mynes 62nd (44:55 7th MV45) all followed in close pursuit behind Esther.
Club Junior, David Burns finished well on the tough course with a time of 57:40 and placed 8th Male Junior. Coach Kookie O’Hagan ensured all his flock came in before completing the technical descent and finishing in a time of 61:51 and 5th MV60.
Firmus Fab 5 Series, Mary Peters Track, Belfast
Athletes Joanne and Meadow McCauley (Mother and Daughter) attended the Track and Field Meet at a cold Mary Peters Track. The duo did not disappoint Coach Kookie in their performances with Meadow running a calm and technical 800m race to lift Gold with 1st place Finish (2:30:22) in the U17s Race and also competing in the Shot Putt and lifting 3rd place. Joanne McCauley competed in the Senior 200m race winning her heat (30:91) and finishing 5th Senior overall and notching a new PB. Joanne also competed in the Shot Putt and lifted 3rd in Senior Category. The pair are training hard on their track and field events ahead of a busy calendar in the coming months and aim to bring in more medals for the club.
Esther named on the NI Mountain Running Team
Congratulations to Esther Dickson as NIMRA announced the NI Team for the Inter Counties Mountain Running Championships. Esther has been named on the NI Team that will compete at Lads Leap, Derbyshire on Saturday 19th May. The course is a challenging 9.5k route with 518m of ascent.
It was a day of extremes and high drama at Saturday's Newry and District Motor Club, 21st Drumhorc Hill Climb.
Again an early start for all but a stunning late Spring morning had everyone in great form. The day remained dry and quite warm until late afternoon when it became much cooler and light rain dented the confidence of the last of the runners in T3.
Congratulations to Ricky McGimpsey on his second consecutive win. He was hard pressed all day by John Donnelly who used all his experience and guile but he remained a close second. John is a formidable competitor having won the event last year despite the appearance of a fullhouse WRC Subaru. Brendan Flynn continued to improve his pace despite his lightweight OMS not enjoying the bumpy road. Andy Hawthorne was next on the list a great result for a first visit.

A marvellous entry of 60 cars and as usual for Drumhorc, a large entry of rally cars both 2 and 4 wheel drive versions showing tremendous form all day.
The star of the group being Oliver Cormican in his Evo 8 who finished first in class and remarkable third overall and just .3 of a second away from Kenny McKinstrys record.
The talk of the event was Andy’s two twin sons David and Stephen who are the most competitive brothers you could ever meet. They traded times all day both incredibly ending up in 58.68 seconds a new record. A new record which Stephen was quick to claim as he was running first, that debate might continue for some time. Some going for a first visit. They are all heading to Spamount, I’m sure they will continue to punch above their weight and I believe them to be well and truly hooked on The Hills.
David Francis made a welcome return to the sport after a lay off in order to further develop his car. A chat at the top of the hill revealed an extra 100 bhp over the previous engine and wheel spin on demand in fourth gear. A car which demands full concentration. David won class 9.with Rudi a strong second.
Class 9 had substantial difficulties with Roger having a problem with the bumps at the second junction leading to him cashing and rolling through the hedge, the Maguire has sustained considerable damage. Roger reports that he is fine with no injuries but will be out for the rest of the season to facilitate repairs.
Gerard O Connell finished his three runs, his last being his fastest. Unfortunately it is reported that he hit the hedge heavily near the finish line and crossed the line on his roof. Dramatic and expensive finish. The Ascona 400 which had been much admired all day was badly damaged. Thankfully Gerard escaped uninjured. Good luck with the repairs and hopefully the bruises fade soon.
Alan Cassells again dominated class 10 taking a mighty 1.2 sec out of his own previous record.
In class 16a Gerry McGarrity was again uncatchable while in 16b Alan Jardine in his Mk1 Escort, although unchallenged took 1.5 seconds out of Stephen Strains previous best. Alan has just fitted a BDA to the car he has owned for 25 years and says the car is transformed.
Special mention must go to the huge class 2 entry but first I have to say Tom Lawther you and the big Rover were badly missed from the line up. Despite the best efforts of Conor Hamill in the M3, Adrian and Michael in the Escorts and Chris in the Renault. Chris only managed one run and was forced to retire with suspension problems. David Gibson drove the wheels off MDB delighting the photographers and spectators with his antics, winning Class 2 and was 0.5 of a second from the record.
Just a quick word about those who missed the event. Current champion Chris Houston was celebrating a birthday and still trying to pinpoint a persistent misfire. Graham Thompson love to see you do a few more this season I believe he was suffering from electrical maladies at Croft hope that’s sorted, David McKimm hopes to appear later in the season.
All in all a memorable day thanks to Newry Motor Club, Trailertek, who were the sponsors for the event , many thanks to Clive Latimer who was present with some staff and I believe enjoyed the day, the marshals, first aid staff timekeepers and everyone else who played a part in the running of the event. Special mention to Robert McGimpsey who volunteered as pit manager and adviser to those parked some distance from the start line. Who found it difficult to get the necessary information required to appear at the right time. His good work ensured everyone got three timed runs.
Everyone who was involved in the day deserves a mention here, unfortunately that’s just not possible so those who did well, scared themselves, clipped a ditch had a misfire or broke a clutch cable, I’m sure you will all be back for more so see you at Craigantlet, the pay is damned bad so that’s all folks.

A quieter race week for Newry AC with Hill and Dales Race 2 in Tollymore and Run Armagh 5k & 10k being the events of the week.
Hill & Dales Race 2 - Tollymore - Thursday 19th April
The weather was warm and sunny and the midgies were out in force for this popular H&D race. Even with the glorious sun, the ground was still sodden with the recent wet conditions which set the perfect race form for Esther Dickson. Esther did not disappoint with a strong performance throughout the race ensuring 1st lady and setting the challenge to uphold her current Hill & Dales Title for this series. The men - Paul LeBlanc, Rory Mulvaney, Ronan Mynes and Kookie O’Hagan - did not disappoint and all ran strong in a challenging course. Unfortunately, due to technical issues no race results are available but Kookie has claimed an unofficial top 10 placing!

Run Armagh 5k/10k - Sunday 22nd April
Podium for the girls!
With perfect running conditions, 2 Newry AC athletes took to the Armagh roads with fantastic results.

Newry 1’s 4-2 Antrim 1’s
Newry hosted Antrim on Tuesday in their final league game of the season having already secured second place. The match had a bit of a friendly feel to it in the opening exchanges and took a while to get going. Antrim were first to strike going one up with ten minutes gone. When Newry finally did get going David England put them into the lead with a great shot from the edge of the circle midway through the half. David England made it two from a short corner before David Andrews gave Newry a 3-1 lead at the break after a good passing move on the right hand side. Antrim pulled one back in the second half as they fought to get back into the game but it was short lived as Newry got a forth and David England completed his hat trick when he slotted home a penalty stroke after the ball was stopped on the line a defender’s foot.

Team: Beck, D. England, C. Henning, J. Greer, A. Baird, C. McKnight, N. Davenport, N. McKnight, K. McCombe, K. McWilliams, K. Fletcher, D. Andrews, A. Irwin, R. Irwin, J Porter
Newry 1’s 5-1 South Antrim 1’s
South Antrim was Newry’s opponents in the first round of the Anderson Cup on Saturday. South Antrim started the better of the two sides and dominated much of the first half on a hot day. The visitors controlled possession but were unable to find a break through. It was Newry who struck first when they broke down the right hand side, before the ball was played into David Andrews who riffled the ball into the top corner. The score stayed this way until the break.
Again South pressed forward looking for the equaliser but Newry held them out before getting their second when Mathew Russell deflected the ball between the keeper’s legs. A matter of minutes later it was three when Keith McWilliams swivelled in the circle and his deflected shot found the top of the net. The same man made it four when he picked the ball up on the right hand side and drove along the by line before somehow slipping the ball under the keeper and into the net. South Antrim pulled one back with a well-executed short corner to make it 4-1. David England scored his second stroke in a week to finish off the scoring and give Newry a 5-1 win.
Team: Beck, C. Henning, D. England, J. Greer, A. Baird, N. McKnight, N. Davenport, R. Irwin, K. McWilliams, K. Fletcher, M. Russell, J. Porter, D. Andrews
Limavady Ladies 0-2 Newry Ladies
Newry Olympic Ladies travelled on away to Limavady Grammar school to play Limavady Ladies.
Newry won passback and were on the attack from the start but were prevented from getting into the circle by the strong Limavady defence. Equally the strong Newry sweeper Diane McMinn-Johnston used her defensive skills to block the Limavady forwards from making any progress as they retaliated.
Twenty minutes into the game left mid Katie McCullough slipped the ball to centre forward Laverne Inns at the half way line at which point she drove down the left hand side of the pitch into the Limavady circle and fired the ball across the goal allowing left wing Shannen Robinson to deflect the ball into the Limavady net putting Newry into a one nil lead. Five minutes later Inns won the first corner for Newry and laid the ball off to centre mid Rachel Lockhart who, forced the Limavady keeper to dive and save the shot. Shortly afterwards the half time whistle went leaving Newry in a one nil lead.
Newry started well in the second half and Captain Kathryn Baird won a short corner and then scored after being played in by Inns. Now with a two nil lead Newry kept the pressure on the Limavady defence with some lovely one two play between right wing Aimee Magowan and right mid Stephanie Smart. However Limavady fought hard till the bitter end and were awarded a couple of corners in the last seven minutes of the match only to have their shots foiled by Claire Gamble at left back and Rebecca Murdock on the right. The Newry goalie Collette Lambe kept the Limavady forwards from scoring with the assistance of centre back Victoria Lewis. Final score two nil to Newry leaving them in second position in the Ulster 8A League with Saintfield and Newcastle still to play. Player of the match was Diane McMinn-Johnston.
Team: K Baird (Captain), C Lambe ( goalie), D McMinn-Johnston, R Murdock, V Lewis, C Gamble, K McCullough, R Lockhart, S Smart, A Magowan, L Inns and S Robinson.
Senior Men
After three league games our senior men are still looking for their first win having suffered another narrow one-point defeat at home to Middletown on Friday night, 2 – 6 to 0 – 11.
The Shane’s were quick out off the blocks on Friday scoring three points in as minutes to get off to the best possible start with Marc Feehan, Greg McCabe and David McCabe getting the scores. A Connaire Mackin point was soon followed up by an excellent score form Micheál Brady to put the Shane’s five to the good and firmly in control. Middletown’s first point of the contest was quickly cancelled out by a long-range effort from Kristian Magill to restore the Shane’s five-point advantage which soon became six when Neil Paul Lennon popped over side’s seventh point. The Shane’s were then rocked back on their heels when a high Middletown free was fisted to the net to get them back into the game and they tagged on the next three points to level the game and completely wipe out the Shane’s excellent start. A fifth Middletown point put them ahead for the first time before a Shane’s defensive mistake gifted the away side their second goal and they now led by four. A late David McCabe free saw the Shane’s go into the break three behind, 2- 5 to 0 – 8.

If the first-half was a fairly high-scoring affair the second-half was the complete opposite with a total of just four points being scored. An early Ryan Quinn point got the home side back to within two before a Kristian Magill free left just the minimum between sides before another Quinn point levelled the game. However, this proved to be the Shane’s final score of the game and it took Middletown a total of twenty-five minutes to score their one and only point of the second-half but it was enough to see them claim the all-important win, 2- 6 to 0 – 11.
The senior men return to action on Wednesday night with an away game against Crossmaglen II’s.

Our U10s travelled to Silverbridge on Sunday morning for their first tournament of the season and competed in the A section of the Cup against Crossmaglen, Silverbridge and Oram. At the end of three very tough qualifying games the Shane’s, Crossmaglen and Silverbridge were all level and score-cards had to be used to separate the three teams and determine who would progress to the Cup semi-final. Unfortunately, Crossmaglen pipped the young Shane’s by one score to move on to the semi-final. Well done to the entire team and many thanks to the players and parents who attended the tournament. We would also like to thank Silverbridge for their invitation to take part. The first U10 league game takes place this Wednesday evening way to O’Hanlon’s Poyntzpass.

Sympathies also to the family of Sammy Bradley who passed away last week. Sammy was the great-grandfather of our underage footballer Darragh Bradley. May they both rest in peace.
Craobh Rua Suffer Narrow Loss In Féile Shield Final
On Saturday our Under 14 hurlers played in the Armagh Féile play offs, in an effort which must be noted for the huge commitment shown to make it to the event. The young Craobh Rua hurlers pulled out all the stops to navigate confirmations, a case of severe appendicitis and a trip to Man United v West Brom.
The same commitment was again on show once proceedings began. Following games v Killeavy, Lurgan and Middleton our lads saw themselves through to the shield final v our neighbours Killeavy.
With a trip in June to Westmeath up for grabs, the stakes were high. Our young hurlers again battled very hard going in 1-1 to 0-1 up at halftime. Playing against a very strong breeze the second half was a case of 'batten down the hatches'. The lads looked to have done enough having conceded only 2points from placed balls. That was until a last minute free somehow managed to find its way to through the packed Craobh Rua defence and put an end to the hopes of our young lads feile aspirations for this year.
On return to the clubhouse the gallant Craobh Rua team enjoyed a bite to eat together and talk had already turned to our next fixture on Wednesday night at home V Liatroim @ 7:15pm which sees them become our first team to participate in the Down U14 league.
We wish Killeavy the best of luck in this years feile and we look forward to the continued progress of our own U14 team over the coming months.
Míle buíochas to all those who helped out and supported our lads in the build up to the playoffs.
