Down GAA ask patrons attending the National Football League game v Meath at Páirc Esler on saturday night to observe the following traffic regulations.
There is no parking permitted on the Warrenpoint Road Dual Carriageway, we want all patrons to travel in safety to and from the game Parking is available in the Greenbank Industrial Estate and priority will be given to those vehicles when exiting after the game. Parking is available at the Quays Shopping Complex for patrons travelling from the Dublin Road direction.
We ask all patrons to co operate with stewards in ensuring the safe arrival and departure of supporters to and from the game.

Down will host the Annual Congress of the Gaelic Athletic Association at the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle over the weekend 16 – 18 April 2010 to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of Down defeating Kerry to win their historic first All Ireland Senior Gaelic Football Title on 25 September 1960.
Congress 2010 will be very special, since Down plan to organise an Iconic Event for the first time, to jointly welcome the leadership of the GAA under the astute guidance of Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Críostóir Ó Cuana along with Congress delegates and also to honour the historic Down 1960 and 1961 Gaelic Football team players and mentors. President of Ireland Mary McAleese is expected to be the guest of honour at the Iconic Event which will also attract Civic leaders from North and South, across the entire political and cultural spectrum.
Down GAA County Chairman Seamus Walsh stated “the GAA is an Association of milestones, and ranking high on the list of importance is September 25th 1960. This was the day when, amid scenes of unprecedented excitement, Down won their first All Ireland Senior Football Championship Title and thus became the first team from ‘North of the Border’ to win the coveted Sam Maguire Cu p. No t only was this a significant victory from a historic point of view, but the style, movement and combination that Down brought to the top were a treat to watch and have remained as part of the style of many teams which followed”.
The Annual Congress is undoubtedly one of the most significant events in the GAA calendar. Delegates from all units of the Association in Ireland, overseas and throughout the world come together to debate, discuss and to formulate the future policy of Cumann Luthchleas Gael.
Speaking at the Press Conference, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Críostóir Ó Cuana, stated: “It is timely that the Association’s Annual Congress should be hosted in County Down given the special year that 2010 represents for everyone that has an interest in Gaelic Games and the affairs of the Gaelic Athletic Association around this part of the island.
“The staging of Congress 2010 here serves as a reminder of the exploits of what was a pioneering Down football team, one that played with no little panache leaving in its wake a strong tradition and expectation that exists to this day in the County.
“I am sure the delegates who gather here from across Ireland and indeed the globe, will savour doing so and aside from engaging in the important business of annual Congress, they will join Down people in marking this most worthy landmark year.”
Acting as Master of Ceremonies at the Press Conference, the Chairman of the Down Congress 2010 Host Committee, Feargal McCormack stated “The foundation stones have been laid and the elevator for the Congress 2010 Iconic Event has now started. We trust that Congress 2010 will allow us an opportunity to celebrate with delegates from across the globe, the significance of Down’s initial All Ireland Senior Football Championship success and that our Congress delegates will enjoy their short stay among us, and that, when they depart they will remember there will always be a ‘Céad Míle Fáilte’, where ‘the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea’.
Feargal acknowledged that the hosting of such a major conference and iconic event would not be possible without the support of the local business community. He particularly acknowledged the platinum sponsorship of the Quays Shopping and Leisure Complex and also noted other major sponsors such as Ulster GAA Council, Belleek Pottery, North Down Marquees and PWS Signs (Ireland).
Cathal Austin, Manager at the Quays Shopping and Leisure Complex stated that the Quays were delighted to be Platinum sponsors for the GAA Congress Iconic Event and that the centre welcomed the opportunity to have GAA delegates and their friends from across Ireland and beyond experience the Quays at the launch, during Congress and in the future.
The hosting of Congress in Newcastle will provide a boost for local tourism with excess of over 600 visitors to the area. As a result, all hotels bedrooms in Newcastle and the surrounding area have been booked out in order to service Congress 2010.
A Primary Schools History Competition and a Post Primary Schools Art Competition with three categories namely Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 is also being organised in conjunction with Congress and Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael will officially open the exhibition of selected entries in these competitions in the Congress Marquee at 4pm on Friday 16 April 2010. Post Congress selected entries will be exhibited in The Quays Shopping and Leisure Complex, Newry.

A new exhibition that has been created by Libraries NI to celebrate sporting excellence in Northern Ireland will be on display in Libraries throughout the province from 2 February. The exhibition was launched in Grove Library on 2 February by the Sports and Culture Minister and Lord Sebastian Coe.
The exhibition is inspired by London 2012 and features a range of home-grown sporting talent as seen through the eyes of Ireland’s Saturday Night; Northern Ireland’s best-selling sports newspaper, which ceased publication in July 2008.
Welcoming the exhibition Sports and Culture Minister and Chair of the NI 2012 Leadership Group, Nelson McCausland said: “All Our Saturdays is an exciting new project developed by Libraries NI and I want to congratulate them on achieving the prestigious London2012 inspire mark brand that recognises excellence and brings association with the Olympics. The Project will help sports enthusiasts to relive some of NI’s greatest sporting moments and inspire a new generation of young people whilst they learn about NI’s sporting history and tradition and celebrating those unique sporting achievements. With less than 3 years to go to the London2012 Games, All Our Saturdays will make a significant contribution to how NI engages with the Olympics and Paralympics and the delivery of a NI 2012 Games Legacy in the lead up to and beyond Games time.
Libraries NI Chairperson Dr David Elliot, said: “All Our Saturdays is one of the outstanding projects granted the London 2012 Inspire mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme, which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Games.
The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see how sport in Northern Ireland has evolved throughout the last 12 decades. It will also bring a touch of nostalgia to those who queued every Saturday evening to secure a copy of the paper.”
Lord Sebastian Coe, added: “I am delighted to lend my support to the “All Our Saturdays” project and congratulate it for being awarded our London 2012 Inspire mark. One of many innovative London 2012 Cultural Olympiad projects, it is a clear demonstration of the creativity of people in Northern Ireland and deserves to be recognised for its excellence.”
Malcolm Brodie, Former Sports Editor of the Belfast Telegraph, added his support, he said: “Libraries NI has not only managed to create a showcase of local sporting talent but this exhibition also illustrates how the paper itself evolved throughout its existence. The bible for sports lovers, it possessed something for every member of the household. Purchasing it each Saturday became a tradition passed down from family to family. The exhibition and its associated events and activities will help ensure that the memory of one of Europe’s finest sporting newspapers will never die.”
“All Our Saturdays” will tour round selected libraries in Northern Ireland during 2010. The exhibition will be used to stimulate a range of activities. Much of this will tie into schools and the development of sports journalism and sports writing, education packs, inter-generational learning and reminiscence work. Could all patrons please note that this is an All Ticket Fixture. Turnstiles will be open from 6.15pm.
Supporters are asked to allow extra time for their journey and arrive in good time at Páirc Esler, at least 45 minutes prior to Throw In Time.
There will be major traffic congestion in the area and in particular after the game there will be a substantial delay for traffic in the vicinity of the Greenbank area as part of the agreed safety management arrangements with the PSNI and Newry and Mourne District Council.

What a difference a few years makes as can be seen from our photographs. I took the Black and White ones on the day of the Armagh v Down National League Football Final in 1983 when Croke Park certainly wasn't as developed as it is today. On that day Down won the National League title but this year as you know things were a wee bit different and Armagh emerged Victorious last Sunday. Several Down Players recently launched a Poker Classic Poker tournament to raise funds for the Down Senior Football Team.
The Red and Black 1960 Poker Classic, in aid of Down GAA Training Fund takes place on Saturday, 22nd May 2010 at 7.00pm in the Carrickdale Hotel, Co Louth
The Down Senior Football Team and Management today announced full details of the inaugural "Red and Black 1960 Poker Classic", a not for profit poker tournament to raise funds for the Down Senior Football Team training fund. The launch of the event took place at the Canal Court Hotel in Newry as James McCartan and his players – team captain Ambrose Rogers, Benny Coulter, Danny Hughes and John Clarke – met the media ahead of their eagerly anticipated clash with Donegal in the first round of the Ulster Championship on Sunday, 30th May.
With a first prize of 1960 pounds, the event will take place on Saturday, May 22nd in the Carrickdale Hotel. Registration is £50 and participation is limited to 200 entrants. In addition to the tournament proper, cash game tables will accommodate players exiting the tournament early. All funds generated from the event will be used to finance the Down Senior Football Team training fund.
Commenting, Manager James McCartan said that "We in Down would like to see our players have access to the very best preparatory resources as we seek to build on our recent National League campaign.
The
inaugural Red and Black 1960 Poker Classic is a creative way to assist the team directly and it offers our supporters and guests something different. I have no doubt that an evening of entertainment with a competitive edge will appeal to the wider GAA community and we may even see a few Tyrone or Armagh men at the tables."
