Down ended up the victors against Leitrim in Newry today scoring 1:16 to Leitrim's 1:8 with Benny Coulter scoring Seven points from play.
A few miles up the road though tension was most certainly in the air at the Morgan Athletic Grounds tonight when Armagh took on Wicklow in their first qualifier game of the All Ireland Senior Football Championship in front of a sizeable crowd and a large contingent of traveling Wicklow supporters.
For the first 20 minutes of the game Wicklow ran away with the game while Armagh scarcely seemed there at all, going in at half time with Wicklow 0:9 to Armagh's 0:4.
All changed though in the second half as Armagh clawed their way back into the game and were leading by two points in the later stages of the game and looked like they were home and dry.
It was a game of twists and turns though and with about five minutes to go Wicklow's Seanie Furlong sent the ball to the back of the net putting them in the lead again, though Armagh managed a last ditch come-back with a point from Substitute Gavin McParland to ensure that extra time was needed.
Extra time again was fought tooth and nail and in a repeat of his normal time trick, Wicklow's Seanie Furlong again put the ball in the back of the net coming up to the end of extra time.
Luckily Armagh had one more score in store and Aaron Kernan stepped up to the mark and put a point over in the dying seconds to ensure a draw and a replay next Saturday.

Both Down and Armagh are still in the running for the All Ireland Senior Football Championship after Down had a comprehensive win over Antrim and Armagh eventually disposed of troublesome Wicklow on the second attempt in Aughrim on a cold and wet summers night.
This leaves Armagh one game behind the rest having to play Tyrone this Saturday in a thrilling do or die match at 7pm in Omagh with the prize of a clash with Roscommon awaiting the winners on the 30th of July.
Down meanwhile have the daunting prospect of a repeat of last years All Ireland Final when they take on Cork in Croke Park on Saturday at 6pm in a double header taking in the Derry Kildare game as well.
Certainly two exciting games to look forward to this weekend!

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín today announced Ross Carr as one of three new members appointed to the Board of Sport Northern Ireland (Sport NI).
Ross who lives in Newry and has extensive sporting experience as both a player and coach has been appointed to the Board of Sport NI for a term of four years from 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2015.
He was Down County GAA manager for the U18 (2002-2004) and for the senior team (2007- 2009) and has wide ranging grassroots experience of gaelic football, football, rugby and athletics.
Following an open competition, Ross along with Hilary McGrady and Paul Cummings were appointed for a term of four years, with effect from 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2015.
Welcoming the new members the Minister said: “Each of the appointees has the necessary skills and experience to enable them to make a valuable contribution to the Board of Sport NI.
“The Board of Sport NI will have a crucial role in promoting the vision of ‘a culture of lifelong enjoyment and success in sport’. This vision forms the basis of my Departments 10–year Sport Strategy, ‘Sport Matters’. Included in this is the delivery of the ‘Stadium Build Programme’ which is the key capital priority for my Department.”
In conclusion the Minister said: “I look forward to working with the new members and the Board as a whole, on taking forward this challenging programme of work.”

Active Communities Network through funding from the Department of Foreign Affairs has developed the E.Q.U.A.L.S. Equality, Understanding and Learning through Sport project in partnership with Crusaders, Newington and Dundalk Football Clubs. The project will look to build relationship both cross community/border in nature through a range of personal and social pathways progressed through sport, education, good relations and building cohesion. As part of the participants learning platforms leadership skills need fostered so learning can be undertaken and promoted into the community.
Active Communities Network identified Newry Sports Partnership and the delivery of Sports Leaders Awards as a great mechanism for developing the ethos of the E.Q.U.A.LS. Project moving forward. So on Sunday 14/8/11 25 young people age range 14-17 across the 3 clubs began their Sport Leaders 1 course which will run for the next 4 weeks facilitated via Newry Sports Partnership and their Sports Leader’s Tutors. We hope all participants enjoy the development of these workshops and gain recognised qualifications, which will increase their opportunities for progression and give them real practical skills; crucial in the current economic situation.
Barbara Knox, Newry Sports Partnership Director, is keen to highlight the benefits of Sports Leaders UK awards and qualifications. “Promoting leadership and unlocking potential in young people to improve decision making is key to building confidence. Our young people have ability and we wish to create a learning environment to exhibit skills and encourage practical application of those abilities.”
Darren King Head tutor was delighted with the response of the group who are aged 14 to 17. He said “Today the group were enthusiastic and mixed well. I look forward to the rest of the course and how they will approach the varying challenges we set out.”

Newry Sports Partnership in Association with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Dublin, on Tuesday 13th Sept, presented members of the Damolly United Football Club with their awards in Sports Club and Community Development.
The Nationally Accredited course was delivered through the Open College Network NI Centre at Newry City FC and is part of the sports education strategy.
The course which combines sports and community development is unique, funded by The Dept of Foreign Affairs, Dublin.
The Reconciliation fund enabled Newry Sports Partnership to work with the club and those from the Greater Belfast Road area and tailor the course content to address the needs of Damolly United FC and their local community.

Barbara Knox from Newry Sports Partnership said: ‘We believe that confidence and leadership are the building blocks of any community development practices. Consequently the work undertaken both in the classroom and vocationally in the community proved attractive to those seeking to encourage young people to participate in sport from outer lying areas of Newry City.
In addition the welcoming environment created through the shared responsibilities of club members who displayed a dynamic, cohesive and accepting attitude led to more families being engaged and included those from different ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds.
Aside from the significant group achievements there are also individual stories of improved opportunities fostered throughout the course.
Geoff Niblock a sales representative for Haldane Fisher, achieved the Goalkeeping Certificate and spent many hours coaching the young keepers chosen for this year’s Foyle Cup representative squads, a role he is very proud of. He commented, “ working with young people and from different areas of Newry and Mourne has been tremendous and I have learnt so much from the experience.”
Gareth McKnight from Damolly United FC added: ‘Recently we were able to host a regional small sided games event at Newry City FC where over 70 children under 9 years of age participated and came from across Newry and Mourne, Armagh, Portadown, Lurgan and Dundalk.
To see our Club and members take responsibility for such an event is evidence of our growing confidence and it’s encouraging to have real cooperation in cross community and intra community development.

Crossmaglen Rangers successfully kept their Ulster title when the won the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship Final today against St Mary's of Burren.
The Morgan Athletic Grounds was the venue and Crossmaglen won by 2:11 to Burren's 0:10

A total of 25 coaches took part in the recent UEFA ‘B’ Licence (part 1) at Warrenpoint Town FC.
The group included five women, underpinning the development of female football in the Newry and Mourne/ Down District area. The majority of the group were coaches from the south down /south Armagh area with one from Carrick, Portadown, Limerick and two from Ardglass.
The striking outcome of the course was the togetherness and co-operation that the coaches shared and thrived upon, speaking volumes for the Irish FA Grassroots Development Programme and its potential to bring people from different areas and backgrounds together.
Significantly these coaches will have direct contact with high numbers of young people from their areas and the learning and goodwill taken from this challenging course will help to foster football development. Praise also for Nigel Best (Irish FA Head of Coach Education) and Alfie Wylie (Irish FA Head of Performance) and their staff for the professional delivery of all aspects of the course. Thanks also you to everyone who took part and we wish you all the very best of success along your coaching career.
