‘Memorable experience, brilliant, excellent,’ just some of the words Niamh, Ashling and Laura used to describe their experiences of playing on the hallowed turf of Pháirc an Chrócaigh on Tuesday 20th July.
The three Bosco girls, Niamh Tumilty, Ashling Fox and Laura Doran were selected to play for their County in an All Ireland Blitz in Croke Park – the first Bosco U16 ladies ever to play there!
The girls played in the tournament opener against Meath and also against Dublin and Monaghan. Down lost out narrowly to Meath but recorded fine wins against the Dubs and the Farney women.
After the tournament the squad had lunch in the corporate suite and then were taken on a tour of GAA Headquarters including the museum and the activity centre and saw the wall of honour depicting Down’s fine All Ireland wins over the years. Alas, the time went too quickly and after that it was time for the bus home North. Maria Fox Girls mentor at the Bosco stated ‘a tremendous day, one that the girls will not forget in a hurry. What a way to cap the end of a hugely successful year for the Bosco U16 girls!’

On Monday 6th September Páirc Esler will be the venue for a Fans' Open Night.
All supporters of Down football are invited to attend the occasion, the last chance to see your favourite Down players in training before the All Ireland Final on September 19th.
There will also be a limited edition Souvenir programme available to buy on the evening at a price of £2. Players will take a break midway through their session to meet and greet fans in attendance. Fans will be able to get jerseys signed and have photos taken with the players etc.
The players will spend approximately 30 mins with supporters and will then complete their training session. It is important that all supporters follow advice of stewards who will usher fans back into the stand safely, when the players are ready to resume their session.
This is an evening dedicated to the supporters and it is something the Down Management and Players want to do to say thanks to all those who have supported them so loyally this year. Wrap up well as it can get cold in the stands!!
Venue: Páirc Esler, Monday 6th September, 7.00pm Entry: FREE OF CHARGE
On surely one of the wettest evenings in months an astronomical crowd of loyal supporters called to Abbey CBS to be met and greeted by the boys in red and black. The players were delighted to see so many out to support them in their quest for All Ireland glory.
The Open Night had been planned for Páirc Esler but unfortunately severe weather meant that another venue had to be sought at a late stage.
This made the job of controlling the crowds especially difficult in a much smaller arena but thankfully the evening ended successfully. Thanks to Principal Dermot Mc Govern and Abbey Grammar CBS for the loan of their fantastic building for the night.
Bearing in mind that there was something in the region of 5000 fans present to see 36 players it was a mammoth task to get everyone into the two halls to meet their heroes. Thankfully the fans were so co-operative and whilst some had to queue for almost an hour there wasn’t a word of discontent and we are indebted to them for their patience. A big thanks to all from Down GAA who contributed to the relatively smooth running of the night in difficult conditions.
