Down Footballer Ronan Murtagh opened his new gym facilities in WIN Business Park, Newry this month. Amidst a hail of publicity and surrounded by fellow Down team mates, including manager James McCartan and other distinguished VIP guests, Murtagh proudly launched his new business venture ‘RM Fitness’.
‘This is no ordinary gym’ explained Ronan, ‘RM Fitness provides clients with a professional dedicated one-two-one personal training programme including expert advice on weight management and nutritional guidance for fast, long term results guaranteed – all at excellent rates’.
‘We cater for all levels of fitness and ability, from those wishing to loose weight and get fit, to dedicated athletes requiring professional advice and support to progress further in their training regimes’.
This is proving to be a very busy time for the Down full-forward. Not only is Ronan opening a new business but he is also preparing for one of the biggest challenges in his life; as he and his Down teammates train for the All-Ireland GAA Football Final clash against Cork on the 19 September in Croke Park.
‘Train smarter not harder’, is Ronan’s fitness philosophy and one which has stood by him throughout his football career. The All-Ireland Minor Championship medallist stated that he is in best shape of his life and eagerly looks forward to sharing his expert knowledge on how to get the most out of training and fitness regimes with his new clients.
Ideally located in the heart of Newry at WIN Business Park, RM Fitness has a fully equipped gym featuring the City’s first ever cryotheraphy pool (ice-bath). The Down GAA All-Star, stated that this technology is a must for serious athletes. Cold water therapy is proven to help remove lactic acid, reduce swelling, and normalize adrenaline production so the body can recover faster and reduce the pain of inflammation and muscle fatigue.

Mayor Mick Murphy wishes Rostrevor Swimmer Laurence McGivern all the best before he jetted off to compete in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October. 17 year old Laurence will represent Northern Ireland in swimming in the Games in the first week in October. He will compete in the 50 metre freestyle. Mayor Murphy congratulated Laurence on being selected for the games: “The Council is very proud of Laurence and we are delighted that he will fly the flag for the Newry and Mourne District and of course for his home village of Rostrevor at the Games in Delhi”. Laurence, who is a member of the Irish Senior Squad, thanked the Mayor for the Councils support and paid tribute to the staff at Newry Swimming Pool: “Newry pool is my home training base. All of the staff are very helpful and I would like to thank the Council for supporting me”

In tonights Barrett Sports Lighting Dr McKenna Cup Clash in Casement Park Down and Antrim headed home with a draw.
From a Six point lead for Down at half time Antrim clawed their way back into the game and only for a late Martin Clarke point the visitors could have been heading home with nothing.

The Trustees and Board of Governors of St. Colman’s College Newry are very pleased to confirm that the sports development at Violet Hill is now underway and scheduled for completion by the beginning of the new academic year.
This development incorporating a full sized floodlit 3G Gaelic pitch, six lane running track and pavilion is a very exciting prospect not only for the College but also for the wider community in Newry and Mourne. The College has been very happy to work on this project with its partners and funders – Sport Northern Ireland, Newry and Mourne District Council and the DSD along with Down County Board. St. Colman’s is looking forward to continue working positively with these groups in the future, with the provision of 21st century facilities that will meet the needs of athletics and other sporting groups in the Newry and Mourne area and beyond. The College is particularly pleased about the potential for this development to impact positively in terms of community involvement and neighbourhood renewal in the Newry area. With the work now underway and the full scale of the development becoming more apparent, all connected with the project appreciate that this is a major and very positive development for St. Colman’s College and the Newry and Mourne area.
Capital Manager at Sport Northern Ireland, Mr Ciaran McGurk stated: “Sport NI is delighted to be involved as the major funder of this flagship project. The project will provide new facilities for a variety of sports, and provides a model of how school sites can be opened up to the whole community for sporting use. A key aim of the Northern Ireland Strategy for Sport and Physical Recreation 2009-2019 is to secure a collaborative approach towards the development of sports facilities between education, district councils and local communities. The St. Colman’s project represents an excellent example of this partnership approach. We look forward to working with St Colman’s College and the other project partners to see the project reach completion”.
Social Development Minister, Alex Attwood MLA stated: “This is an excellent project, which is a clear example of the benefits of partnership working. The new facilities which will be available within the College grounds will provide an excellent opportunity for the residents of the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Area to take part in organised activities, using world class facilities. This will hopefully make a major contribution towards improving the health and wellbeing of the vulnerable members of the community and represents a further example of the DSD’s commitment to tackling disadvantage”.
The Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council, Michael Murphy stated: “St Colman’s College Management and Trustees have seen the worth in initiating an innovative sports project that will embrace the development of a number of codes and sports, to a level which will guarantee their future both locally and regionally. The menu of facilities that will be on offer for both recreational and competitive sport is impressive and will offer tremendous opportunities for the College and for the young and old of our District to excel in sport for generations to come”.

Newry City FC are holding a charity football match this Sunday 6th February at Newry Showgrounds with a 1pm kick off.
A Newry Legends select will play BSAU (Belfast Suicide Awareness United) The Newry side will include some household names from over the years,they include Newry`s player of the century Ollie Ralph.It will also include Micky Keenan, John White, Robbie Casey, Ray Byrne, Marty Magee, Paddy Lundy, Tony Scapatici, Dessie Gorman, Chris Morgan, Richard Clarke and many more too numerous to mention.
We will also have some of the current playing and coaching staff involved including Gerry Flynn, Packie McAllister, Peter Murray, Ruairi and Steven Devlin and Nathan Morley Hillen
.The general public and fans will also be able to pull on the Newry Jersey for a small fee of £20.This is your chance to show current manager Gerry Flynn what you can do!
There will be bar facilities available on the day with some light entertainment around 4pm.There is no set entrance fee but what we do ask is that you make a donation at the gate to this very worthwhile charity.The money will go to PIPS Newry and Mourne Please come along and show your support.

Down GAA Race Day 2011 was launched recently by Down All-Star Brendan Coulter.
The Race Day will take place on Sunday 27th March 2011 at Downpatrick Racecourse.
Tickets are available from all Down GAA Clubs, Club Down, Down Supporters Club or can be purchased at all Down’s home National League Games at a cost of £20.

Funded by the EU’s PEACE III programme, Investing in Our Future initiative and Newry Sports Partnership CIC, Newry City Community Trust is enhancing community relations within the Club by delivering an accredited course for progression on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).
This groundbreaking programme will encourage 15 young people from the Southern Regional area to complete the Irish FA Level 1 coaching award, Sports Leadership qualifications including Community Sports Leadership Level 2 Award and Understanding Diversity in Society Level 1.
This Level 1 unit aims to take the learner on a journey to understand diversity in society and to further complement coaching skills and qualifications.
Paul McKenna, Chairman of Newry City FC said: “In today’s sports coaching environment it is essential that coaches not only have the correct coaching awards and licences but also learn ‘softer skills’ to enable them to communicate and be effective as employees or representatives of sports clubs and organisations.”
“In our drive to offer holistic sports provision at Newry City FC, 15 scholars and staff some of whom are undertaking NVQ 2 in Teaching, Coaching and Instructing are participating in an Open College Network NI (OCNNI) qualification.”
Barbara Knox, Newry Sports Partnership added: “It is well noted that the sport and leisure industry sector in Northern Ireland is growing and workforce development is a priority. It is fortunate that through our partnership with Peace III, Investing in our Future we are in a position to offer these additional skills to those young people interested in a career in this sector.

The recently crowned Irish FA, Belfast Regional League winners of Group 1 and Group 2 today demonstrated their sports leadership skills as they come to the end of the ‘Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership’ held at Newry City Football Club. Sports Leaders UK qualifications are recognised on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and are designed to promote leadership skills and qualities in young people.
Funded by Southern Investing for Health Partnership, this Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership will encourage members of the group to assist in coaching sports and activity sessions in schools and community groups.
Esther King, Special Olympics coordinator said,” This course has been great fun and the squad members have grown in confidence as we have progressed. Some players have improved their communication skills while others are better equipped at overcoming challenges. We have noticed that all of the group are more comfortable in expressing their views and organising small group activities.”
Tutor Ryan McConville highlighted the additional benefits of Sports Leadership awards and qualifications, “ Football training and Leadership skills complement each other and as witnessed throughout the squads’ league campaign recently, to a successful, holistic approach to sports development within Newry City FC.” He added, “ The tremendous work done by the coaches, Esther King, Jim Fox and Jonathan Carroll and the skills that the squad members have learnt and demonstrate is producing a formidable group.”
Barbara Knox of Newry Sports Partnership is, “Delighted to see the impact that the efforts of the Newry City Special Olympics Squad is having in sport.” She went on to add, “ With thanks to the Southern Investing for Health Partnership this course confirms the approach we have taken to offer higher levels of attainment to young people. We hope to see these young people actively getting involved in their community activities as well as having the confidence to help other sports clubs as volunteers.”
