Saturday past saw local man Dermot Mathers run 105 laps of the new athletics track at St Colman's Sports complex in the grounds of the college. This made him the first person to run a full Marathon on the new track.
Dermot who was was joined by fellow Newry City Runners who ran alongside him for support, took part in the challenge as part of his training for the Newry City Runners Treadmill World Record attempt in March 2012.

Power NI has just been announced as the competition sponsor for the 2012 Dr McKenna Cup which has it's first round on the 8th of January.
Speaking at the announcement of the major sponsorship package, Ulster GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghail said, “We are delighted to welcome Power NI onboard as the main sponsor for the popular Dr McKenna Cup Competition. This Sunday at 2pm marks the start of the 2012 Gaelic Football Season with the thrill of a local derby match between Armagh and Down at Pairc Esler in the opening game of the 2012 Power NI Dr McKenna Cup.

In the first round of the Power NI Dr McKenna Cup, Down Came out on top against Armagh with a winning score of 2:12 to 0:10 for Armagh.
In what was probably the mildest ever weather for a January game, Armagh just never looked as if they were going to emerge winners on a damp but dry day.
Down's first goal in the first half from Ryan Brady helped them to a comfortable lead at half time of 1:7 to 0:5 and Armagh never looked like catching up. The second goal from Down's Conor Laverty half way through the second half finished the game of and Armagh never came back.
Down now take on Monaghan at Clones next Sunday while Armagh are home to St Mary's.

Both Armagh and Down came away with convincing wins in their respective games in todays round of the Power NI Dr McKenna Cup.
Down came away from Clones beating Monaghan with a score of 4:12 to Monaghan's 0:11 which now puts them at the top of the McKenna Cup Section B table with 4 points.
Armagh took on Saint Mary's at the Morgan Athletic Grounds and came away with a comfortable win of 1:18 to 0:10 in a game that Armagh never looked like losing.
The next round is on this Wednesday night when Down take on Saint Mary's at Pairc Esler while Armagh take on Monaghan at the Athletic Grounds.

In a very close encounter tonight at the Morgan Athletic Grounds Armagh emerged the victors.
The teams ended the first half on Six points each but after a tit for tat second half Armagh came away the winners by a solitary point.
Final score was Armagh 0:13 Monaghan 0:12
At Pairc Esler Down drew with Saint Mary's courtesy of a point from Saint Mary's player Ronan Sexton.
Final score there Down 1:5 Saint Mary's 0:8

On Sunday 29th January Newry and Mourne Grassroots Development centre hosted its first Coaches Forum at Newry City FC.
Clubs represented were Camlough Rovers, Ashgrove, Damolly and Newry City On the agenda; the New Games Development Centre programme, Talent ID and Coach Education.
The Forum encouraged coaches to share opinions and views regarding the development of young players in Newry and Mourne as well as improving relationships between clubs.
Discussions were informative and at times lively but importantly they were constructive and useful. Grassrtoots Development Officer, Malcolm Roberts commented, "The forum allows coaches who normally would only see each other from the side of the pitch during games a chance to discover the similarities they actually have in terms of providing the best opportunities for our young players".
It is envisaged that the next forum will be in April on completion of the current Games Development Centre held at Newry City FC - Under 7 + 8 St Colman's Sports Complex - Under 9,10 + 11

Down and Armagh came away with a certain amount of satisfaction with their first games completed in the Allianz National Football League.
Both teams played right down to the wire with completely different outcomes a possibility right up to the final whistle.
Down got of to a good start going ahead by 1:3 in the first ten minutes .
Thanks to a tally of 1:4 from Liam Doyle Down came away with a win by the finest of margins over Ulster Champions Donegal on Saturday night at Pairc Esler.
Final Score was Down 1:10 Donegal 1:9
Armagh took on the League winners Cork on Sunday at the Morgan Athletic Grounds and probably came away relatively happy with a draw though a win was certainly not out of the question with them playing the full second half against 14 men after Cork's Paul Kerrigan got the red card five minutes before the end of the first half.
A poor first half from both sides left the teams going in to the dressing rooms with Cork at 1:3 and Armagh with just a solitary point. Thanks in no small measure to Malachy Mackin and Eugene McVerry's free taking skills Armagh came back in to the match and indeed could have won if Eugene McVerry's last minute free had converted.
Final Score was Armagh 0:10 Cork 1:7

MLA’s attended a briefing at Newry and Mourne District Council Offices this week regarding the ‘Draft Celebration Guide to the Olympic Torch Visit” due to take place on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th June 2012.
The Olympic Torch Visit to Newry and Mourne District will include an Evening Celebration and Civic Event. The Evening Celebration will take place on Tuesday 5 June at Pairc Esler followed by a Civic Event on Wednesday 6 June at Newry Town Hall and also involve Council support for several events in the lead up to the Olympic Torch Visit.

Newry & Mourne Mile (proceeds to Sports Relief)
Crooked Lake Triathlon (Camlough Lake)
World Record Continuous Relay Event (St Colman’s Running Track)
Mourne Way Ultra Marathon (off road event)
To maximise support around the arrival of the Torch, Council Officials will be liasing with all the Schools, Community Groups, Sporting Groups and the local Business Community within the District, seeking their participation by turning out to welcome the Torch for both events.
ln association with the Ulster Scots Agency, Foras na Gaeilge and a local Dance Academy, on-stage entertainment at the evening celebration in the form of music, song and dance will be choreographed for the two 10 minute slots allocated by LOCOG (London Organising Committee for Olympic and Paralympic Games.
It is also hoped that following the Civic Event at Newry Town Hall, the Ulster Scots Agency and Foras na Gaeilge will provide a performance for the participating schools
