The recently crowned Irish FA, Belfast Regional League winners of Group 1 and Group 2 today demonstrated their sports leadership skills as they come to the end of the ‘Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership’ held at Newry City Football Club. Sports Leaders UK qualifications are recognised on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and are designed to promote leadership skills and qualities in young people.
Funded by Southern Investing for Health Partnership, this Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership will encourage members of the group to assist in coaching sports and activity sessions in schools and community groups.
Esther King, Special Olympics coordinator said,” This course has been great fun and the squad members have grown in confidence as we have progressed. Some players have improved their communication skills while others are better equipped at overcoming challenges. We have noticed that all of the group are more comfortable in expressing their views and organising small group activities.”
Tutor Ryan McConville highlighted the additional benefits of Sports Leadership awards and qualifications, “ Football training and Leadership skills complement each other and as witnessed throughout the squads’ league campaign recently, to a successful, holistic approach to sports development within Newry City FC.” He added, “ The tremendous work done by the coaches, Esther King, Jim Fox and Jonathan Carroll and the skills that the squad members have learnt and demonstrate is producing a formidable group.”
Barbara Knox of Newry Sports Partnership is, “Delighted to see the impact that the efforts of the Newry City Special Olympics Squad is having in sport.” She went on to add, “ With thanks to the Southern Investing for Health Partnership this course confirms the approach we have taken to offer higher levels of attainment to young people. We hope to see these young people actively getting involved in their community activities as well as having the confidence to help other sports clubs as volunteers.”

Investing in Our Future in partnership with Newry Sports Partnership CIC recently gave out certificates for those who took part on their courses.
Pupils from St Patrick’s in the Meadow area of Newry and St Ronan’s Primary schools recently took part in the Sports Leaders UK Young Leaders course and received accreditation for all their hard work. The pupils tutored by Cathal Fegan and Nathan Riddle of Newry Sports Partnership were challenged through different physical activities to discover skills and qualities of leadership.
The course designed by Sports Leaders UK, an awarding body, aims to present participants with organisational, team working and individual problems to overcome.
These challenges examine different techniques in communication, acceptance and inclusivity through activity sessions. The pupils are central to the results of the challenges and this allows the Tutor to assess potential in leadership.
Cathal Fegan reflects on the sessions, “ When young people are given problems to solve we find that many pupils discover they do have a role to play and are more confident to get involved in finding solutions, something we hope that can develop in later life.”
Nathan also added, “These activities are not performance driven, so children do not have to be strong sports performers to benefit from the course. The activities are to encourage decision making in a fun, inclusive and cooperative environment.”
The project is Funded by the European Union’s Regional Development Fund, through the EU Programmes for Peace and Reconciliation (PEACE lll) and managed by the Special European Programmes Body.

Armagh emerged victorious against Down in both the Minor and the Senior Championship openers at the newly named Morgan Athletic Grounds in Armagh in front of a 13,000 crowd.
The minors started the day with what seemed like an impossible victory trailing by ten points at one stage and looking dead and buried ten minutes from half time.
Final Score: Armagh 3:11 Down 5:4
In the Senior Game Armagh always were the dominant side throughout with Jamie Clarke scoring a goal and two points, Aaron Kernan, five points and Billy Joe Padden, three points.
Final Score: Armagh 1:15 Down 1:10

The Southern Health & Social Care Trust in partnership with Newry Neighbourhood Renewal partnership through the NR health programme, has delivered a very successful IFA level 1 Soccer Coaching Programme. In total 47 people from across the Neighbourhood renewal areas participated in the training and have received a qualification in Level 1 soccer coaching that will enhance the fitness of the community by cascading the learning into the local community. Facilitated by Malcolm Roberts the local Grass Roots development officer under the auspices of the IFA, the participants undertook training in soccer skills development, child protection, first aid and refereeing. This new training will allow the coaches to use a more professional approach to the delivery of coaching and will support not only their own personal development but the development of children and young people across NR areas.
Marian Cully from the Trust said that the soccer coaching would help to improve the physical activity of young people in the Newry NR area by a more tailored instruction to the needs of the individual young person. An evaluation of the soccer coaching showed that participants have gained a different perspective on coaching in terms of how to incorporate structure, new drills, and fresh ideas, more variation and has instilled new learning. . One of the participants added that he is now much more focused on the levels of each individual and recognises that we need to ensure that the children and young people enjoy the experience of coaching and that their health and well being is paramount at all times.
Sean Mc Kevitt NR co-ordinator Newry and Mourne District Council congratulated all the participants on achieving their award and he also thanked Marian Cully from the SHSCT for her hard work in helping to deliver the programme. He added that this initiative forms part of the overall NR strategy to develop skills at local level and to support the communities in meeting local need. He also thanked the Minister for Social Development and his department for funding the programme.

Armagh take on Derry in the Ulster Football Championship at Clones this Sunday.
The Senior Game takes place at 2pm while the Minor fixture is at 12.15.
Patrons can pay in at gate with Under 16's getting free into the Terrace, Pat McGrane and Eastern Stand.
Date for your Diary - Down take on Clare at Ennis on the 25th of June, so a perfect excuse for a weekend away!

The popular Cuan Mhuire Sacred Heart Boxing Club held a Skipathon in the Buttercrane Shopping Centre today to help raise funds for the Club.
Next Friday they fly out Five of their Boxers to compete in the Mediterranean Boxing Championships in Cyprus.
Apart from Cyprus it's a very busy spell for the club over the next few months with boxer Patrick Murphy competing in his Second Professional fight in Australia on the 12th of August.
Patrick has already won his first professional bout against David Bainbridge in Brisbane as well as taking a Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Australia in 2004.
The Club based at 103 Armagh Road welcomes any boys from 10 Years upwards who wish to join. Just go along to the Club any evening Monday to Friday between 6pm and 9pm.

Armagh Minors took on Fermanagh in the Ulster GAA Minor Football Championship Semi Final on a dull overcast day at St Tiernach's Park, Clones but their football skills were far from dull scoring a total of 2-18 to Fermanagh’s 0-7.
Two goals in the opening half contributed to a 2-6 to 0-6 lead at half time for the Orchard squad. First goal was beautifully crafted by Patrick Burns followed by the second one less than five minutes later by Calum McComiskey. In between Conall Gough was very unlucky to be denied a third.
Armagh totally and utterly dominated the second half with them getting twelve unanswered points in the second half with Paul McGeown unlucky to have the gap extended further with a great save from Fermanagh goalie Brian McAleer.

Armagh's hopes of an Ulster Final appearance disappeared in the Clones afternoon after their defeat by a much hungrier Derry team who now look forward to their first Ulster Final in 11 Years.
Despite an excellent goal by Armagh's Micheal O'Rourke in the opening minute of the second half and despite Armagh never giving up Derry never looked like losing their grip on the game with goals from Eoin Bradley, Conleth Gilligan and Mark Lynch.
Armagh meanwhile can only sit back and see what team the qualifiers throw at them in a week's time.
The final score was Armagh 1-11 Derry 3-14
