Alan Hearty, brother of Crossmaglen, and former Armagh goalkeeper Paul Hearty, was on the losing side as the 2012 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship began at The Gaelic Grounds in The Bronx, New York last night.
Hearty, was in goal for New York in the Connacht Championship opener against Sligo, but his side were well beaten, 0-6 to 3-21, by Kevin Walsh's side.
Bosco Junior ladies maintained their 100% winning start to the season with a great but hard fought win over league leaders Saul. With several key players missing Maurice Rooney was forced to reshuffle his team but his gamble worked from the start and throughout as the Newry girls dominated all over the pitch. Kristy McKevitt had her best game of the season in mid field and wee Siobhan Carnegie showed the bravery and skill at corner forward that makes her a handfull for any defender. After the match team coach Pat Fox stated that he was delighted with the result but he felt the girls got sloppy in front of goal and the score line could and should have been doubled. Next up for the Ladies is a tricky journey to Belfast to play Carryduff.
Final Score Bosco 3-11 Saul 1-6

U 10’s
The U10’s were away from home on Sunday 6th to St Peter’s Warrenpoint. With both teams having large squads it allowed for both to field two teams each.
Played in beautiful sunshine in a wonderful setting the games served up a great display of underage skills. Goal keepers David McCreesh and Padraig Gallagher were excellent nets keeping the ‘Point forwards at bay. Keelan McStay, Aidan O’Hare, Jack White, Ethan McGibbon, Nathan Gribben and Joshua Madigan were superb in defence for the Bosco. As the season moves on the Bosco forwards are really getting into their stride and Ross Quigley, Keith McGrath, Ciaran McAlinden, Ryan Shields and Cathal McStay all had solid games against strong ‘Point defence.
With several of the U10 squad making their First Holy Communion next week the scheduled match against Shane O’Neill’s has been postponed until the following Sunday 20th May.
Campa Chormaic

Junior Ladies
Bosco Junior ladies faced their toughest challenge to date in the league when they travelled to Belfast to play a very strong and indeed improved Carryduff side. The Newry girls had to battle all the way to the final whistle to claim the vital 3 league points. At half time the games was tied but Maurice Rooney read the riot act and expressed his disappointment at some of the individual performances but gave the girls 5 very important minutes alone to get their house in order. The Bosco girls stormed up the pitch from the throw-in and hammered home a goal followed by 4 points. Carryduff scored a couple of points but a Michella Downey led Bosco killed of the game with another goal and several points. Best for Bosco - M Downey, K McKevitt, A Fox, A Turley and S Carroll. Final Score Bosco 3-14 Carryduff 2-4

ACMFL Div 2 St John Bosco v Baileghlas
The momentum built up from two impressive wins by Bosco’s minor team was cut short when their next two games were called off. Without a game in three weeks the team were flat throughout the sixty minutes. The game was ten minutes old before captain and midfielder Conal Gallagher fired over the first point. Baileghlas (a Ballymartin / Glasdrumman combination) replied immediately to level scores. Bosco fired over three more points, two from Lee Ruddy and another from Gallagher, to stretch the home side’s lead by the fifteenth minute. But a few minutes later they were hit by a sucker punch when a speculative shot found its way to the corner of the Bosco nets.
Shortly after that the away team scored another point to take the lead. The home side continued to struggle to find any sort of form but they stuck at it and finally scored an equaliser in the twenty-eighth minute, again from Gallagher. In first-half injury time Dario Cafolla shot Bosco ahead with a fine point to leave the half-time score reading Bosco 0-6 Baileghlas 1-2.
Bosco started much better in the second half and corner back Shane Crummy found himself unopposed inside the Baileghlas twenty one metre line to fire over the opening score of the half. Bosco continued to press forward but the effects of the three week break was showing in their general play and they could only add one more point from Gallagher to stretch their lead to three. Bosco’s mentors made several changes at half-time and one of these finally paid off when impressive under sixteen player Darren McShane finished a great piece of team work by scoring a fine goal. With ten minutes remaining Bosco led by six points but credit to the Mourne combination who never gave up and stormed back in the final ten minutes with a point and well taken penalty to reduce the home side’s lead to two points. Deep into injury time Bosco gave the ball away inside the Baileghlas fourteen. The away team broke quickly and a fine piece of team work resulted in a pile driver of a shot coming back off the foot of them post. The ball fell to a Baileghlas forward who took his point. But that proved to be the last kick of the game and Bosco held on for the win.
Final score Bosco 1-8 Baileghlas 2-4.
This was a flat performance by Bosco and a lot of improvement will be needed before their next league games. Again, injuries meant that several of the under 16 team were required to strengthen the panel and the young lads played a great part in the victory.
Next game is home to Clann na Derg on Tuesday, 15th May at 7:30 p.m.
Bosco team and scorers: Rory O’Loughlin, Shane Crummy (0-1), Ryan Collins, John McKevitt, Feargal Lavery, Conor Boyle, Ben Cafolla, Conal Gallagher (0-4) and Jonathon O’Hare, Niall Burns, Dario Cafolla (0-1), Lee Ruddy (0-2, 1F), Barney Doyle, Ryan Byrne and Dylan Morgan; Darren McShane (1-0), Daniel Graham, Niall Byrne, Sean McStay, Jack O’Hare, Patrick McAlorum, Curtis Cregan
U16 Girls
A panel of 22 players travelled into the depths of east Down to face Teconnaught in the Under 16 girls delayed start to the season. After even first exchanges, Bosco fell behind to a Teconnaught goal. This awoke the girls from their slumber and started a fine display of football. From goal keeper through the defence great team work restricted Teconnaught to a few under pressure chances. The Bosco girls were turning over ball and the midfield and forwards ran at Teconnaught relentlessly, picking off scores. An alert Aoife Jackson pounced on a goal keeper’s hesitation to grab an opportunist’s goal. At the end of the first half all the Bosco forwards and midfielders had scored.
At the start of the second half Teconnaught came out quickly and were awarded a penalty, Rosin Kelly got her hand to the shot but couldn’t keep it out. From the kick out a quick ball to Pierra Cafolla from Hannah McKevitt, resulted in a well taken goal. This launched the Bosco attack and the Dearbhla Quinn show that finished the game with a tally of 2-6 at full forward, reflecting the hard work of her team mates in creating the chances. Aoife got herself another goal. Nicole Osbourne closed the game out after coming on for the injured Olivia McEvoy with a well taken goal.
Team Mentor Valerie Cafolla said "She was delighted with the team work and how every girl in the 22 contributed to the result." Team Manager Italo Cafolla, was pleased that the hard work done in training was evident throughout the game.
Final Score Teconnaught 2-4 Bosco 6-16

U 14’s
The Bosco U14’s kicked off their first competitive game of the season on 23rd April with a decisive win against Annaclone. Played at home, the Bosco lads took an early lead and never looked back. The score line speaks for itself but strong performances by Paul Hadden and Devin Quigley ensured an impressive winning margin. Final score: St. John Bosco 8:18 Annaclone 1:03.
On Monday past, the U14 lads made the trip to Longstone on a night that was better suited to fishing out of Annalong harbour. However the evening weather brightened and with Bosco winning the toss wisely elected to play into the setting sun and up the hill at the Valley Road pitch. Bosco took an early lead and were motoring well when the ‘Stone managed to scramble the ball into the net. The home side had their tails up and went in at the break with the narrowest of margins 1:3 to 5 points and an air of quiet confidence.
The Bosco management must have been very persuasive as the lads came out all guns blazing sending over a brace of points in the opening minutes. The Bosco defence were solid and prowled assertively, often penetrating deep into the opposition half. There was also some excellent link up play and soon Bosco had secured a goal assisted by a low setting sun and keeper error.
It would be hard to single out individuals as this was a real team effort but Kevin Boyle was excellent with his harrying and courageous challenges as was Lucas Rossiter, Aidan MacNamara, Kieran Burns, Toby Woods and a particularly solid goalkeeping performance by Jack Quinn.
Final tally St. John Bosco 2:10 Longstone 1:7
Next up is Saval at home Monday May 14th.
U12 Girls
St John Bosco vs. Warrenpoint Saturday 5th May 2012
With a panel of over 30 players the u12 Girls team within the club goes from strength to strength. On Saturday last 12 players were absence due to First Holy Communion is St Patrick’s P.S. but with 18 players ranging in age from 6 – 12 we played our first league match against Warrenpoint. The girls were all excellent with strong performances from Rachel Hanna, Eden Casey, Orlagh Burke, (0:1) and Aoibheann Quinn. (0:4)
Final score Warrenpoint 0:7 St John Bosco 0:5
The growth in girls’ football in the club has been recognised by the GAA Ulster Council as they have invited our u12 girls team to play at half time in the Ladies Ulster Championship Final on 23rd June 2012. This is in recognition as we were the only club in Ulster to attend both Blitz’s in Cookstown and Cavan in April this year. It is also reward for the excellent work by Maria Fox in coaching and recruiting players in St Ronan’s PS and St Patrick’s PS.
The Canal Court Hotel, Newry has extended its sponsorship deal with Down GAA.
The forthcoming Championship campaign - which begins against Fermanagh in Brewster Park - will be 14th year of the sponsorship which looked to have come to an end after last year's championship when the Canal Court indicated that they wouldn't be agreeing a new deal.
Down secretary Sean Og McAteer explained: "After last year's championship, The Canal Court said that maybe it was a time for change.
"They left it free for us to go and talk to other people. If other people were interested they said they wouldn't stand in the way. But if we still wanted to talk to them then they would talk to us."
The Mourne County subsequently agreed a separate deal with The Canal Court for this year's Allianz League campaign, and it has now been confirmed that the hotel will be staying on for the championship.
Since the GAA allowed teams to carry sponsors' logos on their jerseys over 20 years, Down have only had three backers - Kersten Hunik, Ulster Bank and The Canal Court.
First of this week is the Bosco Senior team. After a two week lay off and on the back of a poor performance away to Saul, Bosco seniors started slowly and nervously away to a strong, determined St Johns team on Friday night. With a big full forward line St Johns asked questions that Bosco struggled to find answers to and St Johns went into a 3 – 0 lead 15 minutes in. Some indiscipline and talking back to the ref from an unexpected and respected source lead to the ball being moved up 10 metres (Joe Ryan! Yes Joe Ryan!!). A bit of reorganising at the back by the tactical genius in charge on the night seen our full back line of Robbie Mc Donald, Ethan Toner and Stephen Byrne get a firm grip which they never relinquished for the remainder of the hour. Some wasteful finishing kept Bosco under pressure but with strong performances at midfield by Decky Byrne and particularly Brian Dillon we slowly came to terms and by the break had levelled at 3 -3 with good points by Brian Dillon and particularly by the impressive George Mc Cann.
The second half started similarly to the first with St Johns bringing a big physical threat that had to be met head on before Bosco could get to the task of playing football. This they did admirably with half backs Ciaron Murtagh, Ryan Lynch and Aidan Rooney proving particularly strong in the third quarter. With Steven Moan, Paddy Magill and Paul Mc Keown finding their feet in the full forward line Bosco started playing some good football lead by Neil Tumilty at centre half. In fact it was a brilliant move up the field involving 8 different players that saw Steven Moan turn his man and unselfishly fist a ball to the eager Kevin Fallon to knock to the net, which proved to break the St Johns spirit. Bosco finished strongly picking off points in the final 10 minutes to run out 7 point winners.
Final score St Johns 0 – 4 Bosco 1 -8
Very satisfying performance by the lads after a long layoff and particularly pleasing to see them stand up to the physical threat away from home. The seniors face 5 more away games on the trot which will effectively decide the outcome of their season and physicality will be key to how they progress. A great crowd of Bosco supporters made the trip to support the boys and definitely made a difference on the night and greatly appreciated by both management and players, so hopefully we can get the same support (and result) on the arduous journey to Ballymartin next Friday.
Man of The Match: George McCann
Junior Ladies
Kilcoo vs St John Bosco
Bosco Junior Ladies travelled to Kilcoo on Saturday evening to face Aughlisnafin in the 1st round of the Junior Championship and lived up to their favourite tags by winning by a very comfortable 26 points. The Bosco girls dominated from the start and throughout with the forward line scoring nearly at will and the defence reducing the Finn to only 4 points in 60 minutes of football. Star for the Bosco was corner forward Marie Burke who slotted over 6 fine points from play and was unlucky not to net in the opening half. Manager Maurice Rooney knows that the further his team progress the challenges will get tougher but he knows his girls are up for it. Best for Bosco - Marie Burke , Nicola O,Gorman, Michella Downey, Danielle McCourt and Ash Turley Final Score - Bosco 4-18 Aughlisnafin 0-4

ACMFL Div 2 St John Bosco vs Clann Na Derg Tuesday, 15th May
Bosco minor’s flat performance from last week was forgotten inside the first seven minutes as the home team raced into a 1-4 to no score lead. Points from midfielders Gallagher (2) and O’Hare and half-forward Ruddy steadied the nerves before Ruddy finished a fine move to the net. But total dominance from the home team for the next fifteen minutes wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard as they shot five wides and dropped one short into the goalkeeper’s hands. Playing with a strong breeze the home team really needed to take their chances to establish a commanding lead. It took the rampaging Ruddy to score his second goal then crash another shot against the bar and over for a point to increase Bosco’s lead. But credit to the Banbridge/Aghaderg combination for their fighting spirit as they scored the last two points of the half. Half-time score Bosco 2-5 Clann Na Derg 0-2.
It took Bosco seven minutes to score their first point of the second half from the boot of the returning Aaron Beattie. But this only inspired the away team and they rattled off four points in a row to reduce the home side’s lead to two goals. Lee Ruddy fired over another point to stretch the lead to seven in the sixteenth minute. The game stuttered a bit until Dario Cafolla finally settled it with a well taken goal in the twenty-second minute. A goal in the second minute of injury time by the away team left the full-time score reading Bosco 3-7 Clann Na Derg 1-6.
Given that Bosco shot seven more wides in the second half and dropped a few short the scoreline could have been more flattering but perhaps undeserved as Clann Na Derg played a great part in this game. Bosco only played in patches but those patches were very good. For the rest of the game they were flat like last week and have a lot of work to do before the league resumes in three weeks.
There is now a three week break to allow the players to sit their exams.
Bosco team and scorers: Rory O’Loughlin, Shane Crummey, Ryan Collins, John McKevitt, Feargal Lavery, Conor Boyle, Ben Cafolla, Conal Gallagher (0-2) and Jonathon O’Hare (0-1), Niall Burns, Dario Cafolla (1-0), Lee Ruddy (2-3, 1F), Aaron Beattie (0-1), Ryan Byrne and Sean McStay; Darren McShane, Daniel Graham, Dylan Morgan, Jack O’Hare, David Hughes
U14 Girls
U14 Girls had their first competitive outing of the season away to Saul. The U14’s travelled with a full strength squad bolstered by a number of players from the U12 squad which made team selection somewhat difficult.
Weeks of training and the anticipation of the first competitive match was evident throughout the team from the first minute, as centre half back S O Hare raced forward to open the seasons tally with a goal. D Quinn and V Gratton soon followed with a series of goals and points. The Bosco girls were definitely determined to leave the experiences of last season behind them as the Saul defence found it near impossible to cope with the surge of scores from A Jackson, N McCullough, L Cunninghan and B Collins.
A Shorthall, S O Hare, C Doherty and the Hickey sisters patrolled the defence with excellent tackling and tight marking which meant that our goal keeper R Kelly had little to contend with .
A new midfield partnership of D Quinn and N Osbourne dominated midfield with a fine display of highfielding and effective ball distribution to the forwards. Match captain, D Quinn, continuously surged forward at every opportunity, racking up a tally of goals and points.
A number of changes were made throughout the second half seeing impressive performances from B Connolly , M Gilbert,A Quinn and R Hannah.
Final score BOSCO 8:20 SAUL 2:03
U14 Girls next match is at home against Teconnaught 27th May
U 14’s
Last Monday night Bosco U14’s faced Saval at home. Initially just 13 Saval players turned up for duty against a healthy representation from Bosco, so 13 a side it was. The odds were surely with the home side with a deeper panel to choose from, however Jack Mackin Park is a big pitch and with just 26 on the field and an ensuing rain storm, anything can happen.
Bosco started out well with the opening score - a well taken point by Paul Hadden. They continued their good form with points from Devin Quigley and Micheal Dillon. Indeed Micheal was in fine form tormenting Saval and he added a goal to his tally after less than 10 minutes. At this point Saval were struggling and Devin Quigley worked his way in and rattled the back of the net.
It was about 15 minutes before Saval registered a score as they had been wasteful up to this point. They scrambled a goal and started to claw their way back into the contest.
Decent defending by Bosco and a high level of intensity and further scores including a goal and a point from Toby Woods and a goal from Michael O’Hare left the half time account Bosco 4:6 to Saval’s 3:4. This score-line did not do justice to the possession Bosco secured in the opening half, particularly the first quarter. Bosco went on to squander a total of 12 missed chances in the first half and were to rue this poor finishing by the end of the game.
The second half was similarly intense and in truth there was very little between these teams. As Bosco began to lose their shape Saval remained focussed, were more eager to win the ball and more economical in possession. Jack Quinn made a great save 10 minutes in but by this stage Saval had steadied and started to boss the home side around. With 10 minutes left on the clock Bosco were 2 points adrift and did work hard to try to reduce the deficit. The home team were much too wasteful with poor passing in their own half which was quickly punished. A disallowed Bosco goal towards the end for over-carrying would not have made much difference in this contest other than to ease the sting of this loss.
Besides the good performances mentioned earlier, Rory McParland, Ciaran Byrne and Kevin Boyle deserve credit for their tenacity and work rate in a game that was played with passion and intensity but ultimately a game in which Bosco contributed to their own downfall.
Final tally St. John Bosco 5:10 Saval 6:12
Next up is an away game to Bailieglas (May 22nd) followed by a home game 2 days later against Drumgath.
