In October 2011 with the assistance of Gaeláras Mhic Ardghail Newry Bosco Club organised a Winter programme of Irish clubs for the young/adult members of the club and for the community.
Although it was originally planned to run for 12 weeks this was extended to 20 weeks due to demand and it is planned to hold more Irish clubs in the newly refurbished St Catherine’s room in the coming months.
Certificates of completion for the latest program me will be presented to all participants later on in May.

Another busy spell for Naomh Eoin Bosco CLG with some of the results below.
Seniors
Two wins in 5 days moved the seniors to the top of the Division 3 table this weekend. On Monday night last they recorded a hard fought away win at Drumgath and on Friday Ardglass were comprehensively defeated at Jack Mackin Park.
Gath vs Naomh Eoin Bosco Monday 16th April
Played on a night that resembled mid January rather than April the Bosco boys showed guts, determination and no shortage of heart to defeat the home side with a superb second half display. Bosco started the game brightly and were 1-2 to 0-1 up after 10 minutes. However some sloppy play coming up to half time led to them going in at the break 2-4 to 1-4 behind having played with the strong breeze in the opening 30 minutes. Things were not looking good, but after some strong words in the dressing room the Bosco lads came out a different team and turned a 3 point half time defecit into an excellent 4 point winning margin.

Naomh Eoin Bosco vs Ardglass Jack Mackin Park Thursday 19th April
Friday night was an opportunity for Bosco to go to the top of the league table with a big winning margin and they duely obliged. Ardglass were swept aside with ease at Jack Mackin Park. Leading 2-8 to 1-2 at half time the Bosco lads played some excellent football during the hour to record an emphatic 5-15 to 2-4 win. The game was a story of one way traffic throughout with Bosco always the much superior team. This win by 20 points put Bosco on top of the league table with a quarter of the season played.

Minors
Saul v St John Bosco Tuesday, 17th April
Bosco travelled to Saul for their second league game buoyant after a great victory against St. Marys.
Bosco, with a strong breeze on their backs, started quickly with Aaron Beattie firing over two points inside three minutes. Midfielders Jonathon O’Hare and Conal Gallagher added two further points by the sixth minute. The home team scored their first point shortly after before Gallagher stretched Bosco’s lead with a superbly taken 45 metre free. Bosco were in total control but a series of poor shots kept the home team reasonably close. The Saul lads added a point before centre-half back Conor Boyle rampaged forward to score a great point for Bosco. Gallagher with two great scores and Lee Ruddy with a free stretched the Newry lead to seven points. Saul added their third point of the half to keep themselves just about in the game. Then the best move of the match led to Bosco’s goal. A Saul attack was broken down inside the Bosco fourteen. The ball was moved quickly up the line ending in the safe hands of Aaron Beattie. The corner forward expertly dispatched the ball past the on-rushing keeper. Two further points, from Ruddy and Beattie, left the half-time score reading Saul 0-3 St John Bosco 1-11.
Bosco knew that the home team would come out determined to make an impact in the game. But a great point from Gallagher settled the Newry lads’ nerves. A goal from a penalty and two points reduced the Bosco lead but again Gallagher chipped over a free to keep Bosco in command. Six further points from the home team were matched by the Newry lads in the last ten minutes of the game as Bosco fought hard to maintain their advantage. At the final whistle the score read Saul 1-10 St John Bosco 1-18.
This was a fine team performance by Bosco and bodes well for their next league games. Again, injuries meant that several of the under 16 team were required to strengthen the panel and the young lads played a great part in the victory.

Achadh Lios Na Finne vs Naomh Eoin Bosco
Bosco Ladies traveled to play Aughlisnafhin in their 2nd league game of the season. After an opening day victory Maurice Rooney warned his charges about being complacent especially against a Fhin team who had strengthened over the winter break . As suspected the home team played a very narrow and tight game in an attempt to stop the Bosco girls playing football , this ploy worked for the opening ten minutes but led by Michella Downey the girls quickly started to open up the Fhin defense and scored at will and the defense held the home team to a single point . The 2nd half followed the same pattern as the 1st with the East Down team trying to fill their defense but some lovely football especially from Laura Doran ensured the Bosco girls made it 2 wins from 2.

U10’s
The U10’s travelled to Carrickcruppen on Sunday 22nd April for a return fixture. With a large squad of 20 players attending it allowed both teams to field 15 a side and to play for a total of 36 minutes with 3 period os 12 minutes each. New player Darragh Doyle made his debut in the blue and amber of the St John Bosco colours and had a great game. Padraig Gallagher was back in after a couple of week off and he took a couple of periods in nets alond with David McCreesh.
Ethan McGibben, Keith McGrath, Ryan Shields and Ross Quigley have made the step up from the U8s this season and playing their 5th game have really settled into the U10 team.
Camogie
Dearbhala Quinn (under 14 & 16 Bosco player) represented Down Camogie on Sunday at under 14s against Monaghan. They won by seven points and Dearbhala scored 1:1 playing at full forward.

The senior team suffered their second defeat of the season in a hard fought game away to Saul on Friday 27th of April. Going in to the game there was only one point and one place seperating the two teams on the league table. Things started brightly for the Bosco lads and they dominated the opening 10 minutes but despite making lots of scoring opportunities they shot 5 wides and in a two minute spell Saul scored a goal, the result of poor defending, and two points to take a healthy lead. The Bosco lads fought back and after scoring a rather fortuitous goal of their own went in at half time only two points down. The second half started brightly for Bosco and they took a one point lead but a goal for Saul, again the result of a Bosco error, against the run of play allowed them to get their tails up and they proceeded to stretch their lead to six points. Although the Bosco team got the lead back to three points they unfortunately ran out of time.
SAUL 2-8 ST JOHN BOSCO 1-8
This defeat leaves the team now in third place in the division with a home match to come on Monday night (30th April) at Jack Mackin Park against Glenn with a 7.30 throw in.
U16’s
Bosco u16s are already three games into their season and with 23 players regularly turning up for training and matches competition for starting places is hot and heavy We started our campaign against a strong Loughlinisland side and came out victors by five pts . Stars on the night were Gary Crummy , Daire Rooney ,
Darren McShane, and Jordan Pinnington who came on as a sub and notched up three goals. Next we travelled to Saul to face one of the tallest underage teams i have ever seen . After a slow start where we fell behind by six points we finally got to grips with the game and were unlucky to lose by 2 pts after levelling the match with just two mins to go. Best for Bosco Ryan Carroll and Niall O Hare ,Daniel Graham and Paddy Mc Alorum in midfield Curtis Cregan was superb at centre half back , but man of the match by a long way was Caoilte Jackson whos tackling and high fielding was top drawer. Next up for our boys was Ballymartin at Jack Mackin park . The lads started like demons with tenacious tackling and superb fast flowing football and at half time were 9 pts to the good thanks to three wonderfully taken goals by Darren McShane and Jordan Pinnington .To their credit Ballymartin came right back into the game but Bosco held on to record a four point victory.
Next up for the U16’s is an away fixture against Leitrim and hopefully we’ll witness
another great display.
U 10’s
The U10’s had a home fixture on Sunday 29th April against Shane O’Neill’s in St Patrick’s Primary.
This was a great game of three periods of 15 minutes and excellent football played by both teams. The first period ended with Bosco getting in front 4 scores to 2 with two excellent points coming from the boot of Ruarai O’hare. Not to be outdone Shane O’Neill’s came back at Bosco in the second period notched up 5 scores to the Bosco’s sole score. Going into the third period Bosco trailed by 7 scores to 5 and Shane O’Neills defended brilliantly to try and hold the lead. Michael McNamara pointed from long distance to leave the finest margin between the teams. With barely seconds left on the clock Pól Óg McCormack popped up with the equalising score. At the full time whistle it ended all square with 7 scores apiece –Best for St John Bosco were David McCreesh in nets, Aidan McDonald, Mathew Monroe and Jack White in defence, Michael McNamara in midfield, Pól Óg McCormack, Ross Quigley and Keith McGrath in attack.
Next up for the U10’s is an away fixture against Warrenpoint next Sunday 6th May.
St Colman’s Dalton Cup Final
Best of luck to St Colman’s in the Dalton Cup final next Friday 4th May – especially to St John Bosco U14 players Lucas Rossiter and Paul Hadden who are part of the St Colman’s squad.

The Queens University Golf Classic (sponsored by McAleer & Teague) takes place on Friday, 11th May at Rockmount Golf Course, Carryduff.
The Golf Classic will be a team event made up of four players per team. The entry fee per team is £200 that includes green fees and a meal.
Tee times shall be allocated upon receipt of payment on a first come first served basis. The tee has been booked from 11.00am until 3.00pm.
Among the prizes will be the O’Hara Cup, named in honour of Paddy O’Hara.
John Devaney, QUB GAA PMU Chairman, said that “the Past Members’ Union has been an important source of support for the Queen’s club, while hosting a variety of events for past players. So many of our members are golf enthusiasts, so we would intend that this event is an appropriate way of integrating many of our past members into an annual event. We are delighted also that McAleer and Teague will once again be supporting this event and have been superb partners for this venture”.

Almost 100 cyclists have already signed up and we would invite them to also come along to the information night to encourage cyclists who are looking for a challenge.
So come along and sign up for this unique event which is inspired by the famous mountain stage of the Tour de France and will see participants take on either 70 miles or 45 mile of stunning mountain roads. This is a chipped event, during which there are two King of the Mountain races.

Down may not be without talismanic forward Benny Coulter for all of this year's Championship after it emerged that the Mayobridge ace could return to action in July.
Coulter broke his ankle in a Down ACL Division One match against Bryansford on Monday night and it was feared that he would miss the rest of the season.
But the ankle break is a clean one and, though the 2010 Allstar will definitely miss Down's Ulster SFC opener against Fermanagh on June 3, he could be back in red and black the following month.
The Fermanagh encounter will be the first Championship match Coulter will have sat out since he made his senior inter-county debut in 2000, but he is optimistic he will be back quicker than initially expected.
"Hopefully it'll come on and heal well," he said.
"The doctor told me it's a good, clean break and if it does heal I could be back in ten or 12 weeks.
"I'm not ruling myself out. All going well, I'll get game time in early July and hopefully we're still in the thick of things and doing well."
The Mournemen have had no luck with injuries this season. Also on the sidelines are Danny Hughes, Anton McArdle, Declan Rooney, Dan Gordon and Damien Rafferty.
Hughes is the only one likely to be fit for the Ulster opener and he hopes to get a game in for his club, Saval, before then.
“I would hope that in a couple of weeks I’ll be kicking a football,” said all-action half-forward Hughes.
“The physio is very, very good and she’s doing a lot of work with me so things seem to be going OK.
“I’m doing a bit of bike work, I’m out jogging and getting up to half pace and I’ll hope to get a run out with Saval (his club) before the Fermanagh match, just to get me up to some kind of match fitness.”

Armagh and Down fans are invited to go along and watch their heroes go through their paces in open training sessions next Friday night.
Down will train at the Abbey CBS in Newry from 7pm to 8.30pm while the Orchardmen will continue their Championship preparations at the Morgan Athletic Grounds from 7pm.
The initiatives are part of the GAA’s campaign to promote the 2012 Campionships and similar events will be happening
across Ireland at the same time.
Down manager James McCartan said that this would be a night for the fans;
He said: “The Down supporters are among the best in the country and hopefully we’ll reward them with a long journey
in this year’s Championship. We are preparing well for our opening encounter with Fermanagh and despite a few injury
setbacks we’re determined to have a real go this year.
“!is event is a chance for us to give something back to the fans – bring the kids along and let them soak in the
atmosphere and get to meet and greet their favourite players. It will be 2010 all over again – but hopefully the weather
will be kinder than it was then when we held our open night prior to the All-Ireland final.
“Friday 11th May at the Abbey is in my diary – make sure you put it in yours.”
Armagh fans will be able to enjoy guided tours of the Morgan Athletic Grounds including dressing rooms, media room and control room.
For younger supporters there will be a longest kick and penalty kick competition.

Newry City's bid for a return to the Carling Premiership ended in disappointment last night when a controversial late Scott Davidson goal meant Lisburn Distillery won their play-off 3-2 on aggregate.
The Whites went in front on 18 minutes when Pat McShane crossed for Davy Larmour whose header hit the bar. But the ball bounced to Cushley who smashed a volley past Gareth Buchanan and into the net.
City levelled on 33 minutes when Don Tierney crashed a shot through a crowd of players and into the bottom left corner.
Newry took the lead on 37 minutes when captain Darren King crossed from the right and Stephen Hughes headed past a helpless Brennan to give his side the lead.
But Distillery were back on terms before the break. Hall made ground down the right and squared to Gary Thompson who poked the ball home from point blank range.
Darragh Hanaphy went close twice as Newry, trailing on the away goals rule, pushed for a winner.
But they were floored by a sucker punch with 10 minutes to go when sub Neal Gawley broke and played in Scott Davidson.
Newry's appeals for offside fell on deaf ears as Davidson slid the ball into the bottom left corner to consign Newry to another year in the Championship.

Paul Braniff saw Down over the line as they saw off the challenge of a dogged Mayo to win 0-19 to 0-17 at Elverys MacHale Park on Saturday in the Christy Ring Cup first round.
Led by centre half-forward Braniff, Gerard Monan's men raced into a 0-7 to 0-1 lead after 10 minutes. Three frees from Braniff, along with a brace of points from both Paul Sheehan and Daniel Toner, left Down in total command.
But Mayo rallied in the closing stages of the first half and the sides went in at the break with Down leading by 0-11 to 0-7.
The westerners burst out of the blocks in the second half and had the game back to a single point inside four minutes thanks to three pointed frees from Feeney.
But Down dug in and points from Braniff, Sheehan and Conor Mageen kept them in front.
Mayo captain Keith Higgins drove over a point from near the sideline and then set up Darren McTighe to leave the gap just 0-14 to 0-13.
With 20 minutes left he sliced through the Down defence to score the equaliser and Brian Hunt put Mayo in front for the first time a minute later to leave the Ardsmen in trouble.
But Down would not be denied and Braniff levelled the game before Fintan Conway broke from defence to put his side back into the lead.
Michael Turley clipped on another after he came off the bench and Braniff made the gap three with five minutes left.
Mayo couldn't find the scores they needed and Down held on for a deserved win.
