Bosco star Conal Gallagher lines out for the Down Minor team next Sunday against Fermanagh in the first round of the Ulster Minor Championship in Brewster Park when Down will take on Fermanagh and all in the club wish him well.
Seniors
Atticall 0-11 Naomh Eoin Bosco 1-12
The seniors gained another 2 valuable points in their quest for league honours when they had a last gasp win away to Atticall on Friday night. The first half started well for the boys in amber and they went ahead early on but some poor passing, shot selection, and indiscipline in defence allowed Atticall to stay in touch with the half time score reading 0-7 0-4 in favour of the visitors. The Bosco lads stayed well ahead during the third quarter but the controversial stopping of the game by the referee for attention to be given to an injured Atticall player when Bosco were bearing down on goal seemed to be a turning point in the contest. The Bosco lads allowed this development to upset their rhythm and Atticall gained the ascendancy around midfield. Having been 5 points down when the decision was made, the home team clawed their way back to be only one point behind with 2 minutes of the game remaining. Bosco were on the back foot but this team doesn't lie down and a minute later they scored the critical goal which secured the win - their 7th of the season. This victory keeps them in 3rd position in the league, 1 point behind 2nd placed Saul with a game in hand. Next game is away to Ballymartin in Longstone next Friday night at 7.30 and all support is very welcome.
U14 Girls
St John Bosco vs. Teconnaught U14 Girls 27th May 2012
U14 girls met Teconnaught on a blistering hot Sunday ‘top of the table clash.’ With both teams sitting on six points in the league, this match was difficult to call on paper. Both teams played cautious football for the first ten minutes but the Bosco girls soon began to take some tentative scores. Again the defence held firm but the forwards at times made heavy work at taking scores, tending to over play the ball in front of goal. Half time 0.07 and 0.00 in favour of the Bosco.
After some well earned water and some words of encouragement, the girls once again imposed their dominance. S O’Hare showed great fitness levels and D Quinn soon began to display her usual scoring prowess. Great performances were also displayed by L Cunningham, B Collins, A Jackson, V Gratten and M Gilbert. Three U12 girls joined the panel for the match and all had excellent games. P Connelly came on in the second half as the Bosco girls took point after point. Goals eluded the girls time after time but the points continued to flow. Teconnaught replied with two late goals in the match but the points at this stage were definitely going to the Bosco girls.
Final score: Bosco 0.21 Teconnaught 2.00
U 14’s
Tuesday 22nd Bailieglas V St. John Bosco at Kilkeel
On Tuesday May 22nd St. John Bosco U14 squad made the journey to Kilkeel to play Bailieglas. On a beautiful evening Bosco arrived on the pitch only minutes before the throw in and winning the toss, elected to play into the evening sun.
This season Bosco have tended to be slow starters, almost in doubt at their own ability and tonight was to be no different. In the opening 10 minutes Bosco were lacking in pace, confidence and tactically seemed at sea. Bailieglas started with great energy and determination and racked up 3 points before they saw their number 9 suffer a very nasty knee injury. The lad was in distress and play was held up for a good 10 minutes while he was tended to by Bosco & Bailieglas first aiders. He was stretchered off and the loss of this talented playmaker and the interruption to the flow of play favouring Bailieglas allowed Bosco time to re-examine their performance.
Bosco restarted a different team and Devin Quigley who was in great form pointed which was the first score of many but took 15 minutes to bank. However, Bosco were guilty of fouls in the scoring zone that allowed Bailieglas to stay in the hunt.
The second half continued in a similar vein with Bosco pushing on hard and playing with an intensity and fluency that saw them close this contest out with a comfortable margin. Bailieglas were wasteful though with numerous wides and squandered opportunities.
Mention should be made also of Sé Irwin who had been placed in left half back and seemed to relish this berth. Others deserving mention are Micheal Dillon, Toby Woods, Aaron Osborne, Paul Hadden and Michael O’Hare. It was also another good performance from Jack Quinn in nets but in truth once Bosco got motoring they were solid in all areas resulting in a 3rd win from 4 played.
Thursday 24th the St. John Bosco V Drumgath Jack Mackin Park
They say history repeats itself but we didn’t expect it from the Bosco U14’s twice in the same week! Frustration from the sideline was justifiable as yet again the Bosco lads seemed to be dazzled and in awe of their tormentors. Some very poor passing and marking saw the visitors gallop off into a goal and 6 point lead to no score. With a mountain to climb, at this stage my notes are short with ‘dreadful’ the only comment. Toby Woods was one of the few Bosco players at this stage who seemed in control.
Besides some slick passing and link-up play, Drumgath had a simple and effective game plan – drag the Bosco backs out of position and leave acres of space for penetrating runs and inevitable scores.
Half time was a welcome relief for the good home crowd and the players in a frustrating opening half. Whatever was said at half time worked together with some tactical substitutions and a clear instruction to defenders to defend. Following this advice, they stood their ground despite the temptation to go walk-about. Ciaran Byrne, Lucas Rossiter, Aidan MacNamara, Aaron Osborne and Sé Irwin provided a reassuring barrier and scores followed.
These slow starts are a worry and could catch Bosco out but nevertheless they deserve real credit for fighting their way out of this one and coming home with a tally of: St. John Bosco 5:10 Drumgath 1:12 and 4 wins from 5 games.
Next up is Round 8, St. John Bosco V Atticall 28th May in Jack Mackin Park
U12 Girls
Naomh Eoin Bosco vs Sabháil Jack Mackin Park Saturday 26th May 2012
The Bosco under 12 girls had a great result against local rivals Saval in their league match at Jack Mackin Park on Saturday. The midfield pair of Aine McCabe and Orlagh Burke dominated this area and provided great support to the forward line. Nicola Downey scored several excellent scores including two fisted points in the second half. Katie Grant and Aimee Murtagh won great possession against a strong Saval defence and new players Aime O’Hanlon and Niamh Burns competed well.
The decision to put normal full back Eden Casey into nets proved to be a good one as Saval, spurred on by the Tumilty girls had several shots well saved. Rachel Hanna was a rock at the centre of the defence and helped Bosco to break quickly in the second half.
There were also good performances from Caitlin Murphy; Caomibe McShane; Rebakah Doyle and Cliona Mathers.
Scorers Aiobheann Quinn (2: 2); Nicola Downey (1: 3); Aine McCabe (1: 0); Orlagh Burke (0: 1)
FINAL SCOREBosco 4 :06 Saval 3: 04
Even without Benny Coulter, Down are massive favourites to beat Fermanagh on Sunday in the Ulster Senior Football Championship quarter-final at Clones.
Down enjoyed a good season in Division One of the National Football League – beating Dublin, Mayo, Donegal and Laois and warmed up for this weekend's game by trouncing Armagh in a recent challenge match.
But Peter Canavan's Fermanagh have also become used to winning. They were unbeaten in their Divison Four campaign, clinching promotion before losing the final against Wicklow.
Down coach Aidan O’Rourke believes the Ernemen are a much better team than their results in recent seasons suggest.
“Promotion to Division Three was as far as they could go in one year – but realistically they’re a Division Two team with the players they have,” said the Dromintee man who won the All-Ireland with Armagh in 2002.
“They can be very dangerous to have to deal with.”
O’Rourke praised the job that former Tyrone star Canavan has done in his first season with Fermanagh.
Canavan inherited a team in disarray – last season many established stars refused to play for manager John O'Neill and the county suffered an ignominious defeat against London in the Qualifiers.
“There are good players in every county, it’s a matter of if you can harness them,” said O’Rourke.
“Outside influences sometimes mean that the best players don’t play for their county.
“Peter has done a very good job in making sure that the best players in Fermanagh are all playing for them.
“They all seem to be pulling in the same direction, the results and performances this year indicate that they’re much improved on their starting point at the beginning of January.”
CLONDUFF'S Arthur McConville could be the focal point of Down's attack tomorrow in what promises to be a packed Brewster Park.
The Hilltown man will make his Championship debut for the Mournemen as they take on Fermanagh in the Enniskillen cauldron.
He is the only newcomer in James McCartan's side which is without several big names including Benny Coulter but should still have enough firepower to deal with Fermanagh.
The Ernemen have injury woes of their own with captain Ryan McCluskey ruled out, but even in the absence of some stars, the Ulster Council is expecting ther biggest crowd of the season yet tomorrow.
12,847 filed through for the Kingspan Breffni Park turnstiles for the preliminary round meeting of the reigning Ulster champions Donegal and Cavan two weeks ago. It was the biggest crowd to attend an Ulster SFC preliminary round game since 2010 when Derry and Armagh drew an attendance of 10,242.
And last Sunday's attendance of 8,804 for the Monaghan v Antrim quarter-final in Clones was 2,000 more than expected.
"Between the first match in Cavan and last weekend's game at Clones, we're 70 per cent up on where we were at this stage in 2011," said Ulster Council president Aoghan Farrell.
"There has been a very positive response to our policy of U16s going free and to our ticket price reductions across the board, and we've had a lot of positive feedback from our spectators.
"We're expecting a very good crowd on Sunday, especially given that it's a Bank Holiday weekend and with the weather set to hold up as well. So we're looking forward to another bumper crowd for what should be another enthralling match in the Ulster championship series."
Thirty Seven Year Old Richhill native Richard Turkington took top spot in front of an extremely enthusiastic crowd at todays Newry Marathon on a cold but mostly dry day.
Finishing in a time of 2:38 he was closely followed by seasoned Newry City Runner Don Travers at 2:39, winner of the race in 2009 and 2010.
Pride of place in this years Marathon had to go to Team Dariush who had numerous runners taking part in memory of their friend Darius Mehrtash who passed away in January this year.

Armagh Minors lost out to Tyrone on Sunday in their opening Ulster Minor Football Championship game at the Morgan Athletic Grounds.
Despite Armagh's great start which was helped by five points from play from Ciaran O'Hanlon and resulted in a seven point unanswered lead it just wasn't to be Armagh's day.
Two goals from Tyrone's Sean Hackett and Mark Bradley helped get Tyrone back in to the game but half time it was still Armagh going in at two points ahead at 0:13 to Tyrone's 2:5
The second half saw Tyrone add another two goals to their tally and the game was in the bag.
Final Score Armagh 0:19 Tyrone 4:11
Armagh Senior Football squad lost out by three points to Tyrone at the Morgan Athletic Grounds on Sunday in a game that certainly didn't go all Tyrone's way.
In a game that tipped one way and then the other in the first half, Tyrone went in at the break leading by three points.
With Armagh down to 14 men and the sending of of Kevin Dyas for receiving two yellow cards it really looked Tyrone's day but then points from Armagh's Jamie Clarke and Brian Mallon put the score all level with three minutes of normal time left.
Tyrone had extra in their tank though and they added another two points from Peter Harte and Martin Penrose followed by a point from Armagh's Jamie Clarke and the last score of the game another point from Tyrone's Penrose.
Final Score Armagh 1:13 Tyrone 0:19

This week Bosco U12 girls went top of the league as a result of their game against Warrenpoint on Saturday 9th June 2012.
The Bosco under 12 girls had another great result against the 'Point in their league match at Liam O’Hare Park in Warrenpoint on Saturday.
In the first half Warrenpoint were the dominant team and due to slack defending in the Bosco back line, they managed to score three goals. The Bosco team, fresh from victories against Burren and Saval in recent weeks became frustrated and lacked their usual flowing football. 2 points from Aoibheann Quinn and 1 from Aine McCabe following by a well taken goal from Orlagh Burke improved the situation before the interval.
In the second half Bosco began is take their scores with further points from Aoibheann Quinn and an opportunist goal direct from a free kick by Aine McCabe. In the second half there were excellent performances from Katie Farrell, Sarah O’Hanlon and Rachel Hanna with Rebakah Doyle and Aimee O’Hanlon the best of the forwards.
Nicola Downey was a big loss due to injury but should return for the next match against Roostrevor.
Scorers Aoibheann Quinn (0: 5); Aine McCabe (1: 2); Orlagh Burke (1: 2)

U10s
St John Bosco vs St Peter’s Warrenpoint St Patrick’s P.S. Sunday 10th June
Tommy Ruane and the other mentors from St Peter’s brought a large squad of players up from the Point to meet the St John Bosco U10s on Sunday morning.
Fielding a re-jigged team with changes forced due to illness and holidays the Bosco were missing several key players including the O’Hare twins Jack and Ruarai, Ryan Shields, Padraig Gallagher, Ciaran McAlinden, Daniel Preece and Nathan Gribben.
With Calum McNulty and Michael McNamara controlling midfield they stifled the ‘Point attack whilst feeding in fantastic long ball into the forward line allowing Joshua Madiga, Pól Óg McCormack and Keith McGrath to cut through the defence and take some excellent scores.
In the second period of play Warrenpoint juggled their line up to great effect and brought the game to the Bosco. However with Matthew Monroe, Jack White, Ethan McGibben and Ross Quigley on top form the visitors couldn’t get through the Bosco defence and were restricted to long range shooting.
In the third period of play came the score of the game with a long pass out to Pól Óg McCormack at wing forward from Cathal McStay the ball was flashed across the net to be met by the on rushing Michael McNamara who with ‘Coulteresque’ skill punched the ball to the back of the net with two fists.
After 45 minutes of football the two teams were mixed and another entertaining 15 minutes of football followed. This format provided an opportunity for all players to shine Goal keeper David McCreesh was moved into half forward and scored two fine points and Matthew Monroe slotted over from the half forward line.
This was a wonderful display of football from both teams, played in wonderful weather, on a pitch in excellent condition – great entertainment for all.
Next up for the U10s is Shane O’Neills on the 24th and the U10 tournament on the 1st July
