The Bosco senior game against Drumaness, which was due to take place on Friday night was postponed due to a water logged pitch but will take place tonight Monday 18th in Drumaness with a 7.45 throw in. All support welcome.
U14 Girls
U 14 girls salvage victory.
On Sunday, 17 June the U14 girls faced Ballymartin .
With no points from either of their two games Ballymartin were perhaps expecting to be on the receiving end of another fine display of football by the league leaders. However this was not to be the case. The free flowing football and high scoring performances of the Bosco girls in recent matches did not materialise as they struggle to get to grips with a determined Ballymartin team .
After a few days of prolonged rain, pitch conditions were not conducive to pretty football. This proved to be the case from the off set .Scores were slow to come by from either side , coupled with a host of squandered chances in front of goal, by half time the Bosco narrowly lead 0.03 to 0.02.
Throughout the first half the Bosco defence were able to soak up a lot of needless pressure as the Ballymartin girls seemed to be free to attack with ease. Good performances in defence were noted by A Shortall , the Doherty sisters, N Hughes N McCullough and S O Hare.R Kelly in goals had a solid game , displaying fine fielding and kicking skills. A young goal keeper with a promising future.
The second half started as the first ended with score after score being wasted by the Bosco girls . They slowly showed glimpses of their potential but it was not enough to put daylight between the teams. The squad was bolstered with a number of very talented U12 girls who demonstrated that they could compete at this level and with their introduction the team held firm to a lead of a single point.
With the result of the game in the balance Ballymartin stunned the Bosco with a late goal. The character of the team was to be put to the test in the dying minutes of the match as the first defeat of the season seemed enviable.
In the last few minutes of the game the Bosco girls dug deep and with two late points from D Quinn, the Bosco girls snatched the win . Great endeavour was also shown by M Gilbert, V Gratton, N Osbourne, A Quinn and L Cunninghan.
All things considered, the Bosco girls earned another 3 valuable points despite not playing up to their usual standard and proudly remain top of the league.

U 14’s
The last match report ended “There’s a great buzz about this unit and next up is a ‘friendly’ against Burren reserves on the 7th June followed by that crucial meeting with Longstone on the 11th. Watch this space…”
On Monday June 11th Longstone visited Jack Mackin Park with a much improved team who have significantly lifted their game since our last meeting having won every contest since. So with both teams on equal points this was going to be a grizzly wrestle for 2 vital points and a top league berth.
An intense thunderstorm from about 4:30pm left the pitch in a very poor state with water pooling in areas and both teams struggled to get any life into the ball which was hard to control. The bounce was dead and the referee did his best to allow play to flow but tackles looked worse than intended and Bosco were to see two yellow cards flashed, one in each half.
The Bosco started out well with a first score from Devin Quigley who was in excellent form and was to leave a big impression on this game. Martin Keenan made his debut in midfield and notched over an excellent point in the first quarter. Bosco midfield and backs were strong and pretty much snuffed out Longstone attacks however overzealous challenges saw Martin receive a yellow card and stern warning from the ref who was in no mood for a parliamentary debate!
The first half was a difficult see-saw battle and was grim enough football at times with some in the Bosco forward line unwilling to pick the ball up preferring to try impossible shots from the turf. Devin Quigley skilfully found the net twice before half-time leaving the score 2:2 to 2 points, a margin that was going to require serious defence.
The Longstone boys restarted brighter and with much more passion and conviction and were also more economical in their shooting. Micheal Dillon received a yellow for a push and there was a feeling that the screw was really being turned on the Bosco. Martin Keenan was moved up to the half forward line with Devin Quigley falling back to mid-field. This move saw Martin securing Bosco’s 3rd goal which was a welcome relief after a period where they were frustratingly dropping the ball to the keeper or blasting wide.
Paul Hadden has been delivering an assured performance in the free-taking stakes and again tonight he was reassuring as Longstone entered a purple patch in the last quarter. The ‘stone had some excellent scores from play and were particularly menacing in and around the square. Sometimes frantic defending saw the Bosco conceding scores in the danger zone and the subsequent frees kept Longstone in the hunt for honours.
With Jack Quinn injured the stand in keeper for this critical game was U12’s man Kane Rossiter who was excellent throughout this contest. Not only did this young lad keep a clean sheet, but his distribution and calm under pressure was simply wonderful. He made a last gasp save in the dying moments of this game and showed great courage against some pretty fearsome attacks.
Ciaran Byrne also deserves special mention as a saviour who frustrated Longstone with his ability to be in the right place at just the right time including a spectacular block that denied the ‘stone a certain score. Other mention should go to Rory McParland who worked diligently and honestly throughout.

U 12 Girls
Bosco U12 girls to play at Ulster Final
With no match this week the table topping under 12 girls continued preparation for the their exhibition match at the Ulster Ladies Championship Final next Saturday 23rd June in the Athletics Grounds in Armagh. The match will be between Armagh and Cavan with the Bosco Girls taking to the pitch at half time for a nine aside match. This will be a very special occasion for the girls and their parents.
The numbers continue to grow at this age group with 27 players attending training on Wednesday night and 35 players in total available.

Take a bit of extra care on the roads this weekend as the Co-Operation Ireland Maracycle is taking place on Saturday and Sunday, 23rd and 24th June.
The event which began in 1984 departs on Saturday from Queen's Sport, Upper Malone, Belfast bound for Dublin City University. You also have the choice of entering different phases of the cycle and you can still enter on the day. It will probably start around 10am at Haldane Fishers', Carnbane.
Late entries can be taken at Haldane Fisher's on Saturday 23 June from 09.00-10.00 (departure to Dublin at 10.00) and on Sunday from 11.00-12.00 (departure to Belfast at 12.00).
The route on Saturday goes through Camlough, Sturgan Brae, Forkhill, Carrickasticken, Kilcurry, Dundalk
The return leg on Sunday is much the same in reverse with a lunch stop at Lislea

After waiting six weeks for their second league fixture of the season the Under 16 girls team had to cancel it due to a flooded Jack Mackin Park. A challenge match was arranged to get the girls back onto the pitch against Carrickcruppen. Exams meant not all the panel were available but 21 girls made their way up the Camlough road for the fixture.
Cruppen were quick out of the blocks and took the first score. Once the Bosco girls in midfield got organised they picked up where we left off our last matches. Scores from Olivia McAvoy, Piera Caffola and Terri Quinn were followed by a great goal from Piera dropping the ball over the keepers head from 25 yards out. Cruppen didn’t lie down and only great defending from the Bosco full back line of Taylor McConkey, Alex Shorthall and Niamh O’Reilly, forced their forwards to snatch at shots with resultant wides. The Half back line of Sinead Patterson, Carly Gibney and Sinead O’hare provided good protection and a launching pad for the attacks.
Nicole Osbourne played well in particular winning opposition kick outs allowing Bosco to keep the pressure on.

At half time changes were made to introduce all players to the Bosco team and a number of positional changes made too. This allowed Cruppen to build and put the re organised Bosco defence under pressure. After Cruppen got an opening point, Bosco conceded 5 goals in quick concession.
Good work by the half backs and midfield put early ball in to Lydia Leary who had moved to the edge of the square and resulted in a well taken goal. Aoife Jackson was reintroduced and she continued her opportunist goal scoring run, with two well taken goals from around 20 yards out. A finely balanced match entailed with Bosco scraping over the line to win by 2 points. Giving manager Italo Cafolla and acting captain Terri Quinn an early birthday present.

Early in the league campaign and in their first meeting, Saval finished that bit better and were much more economical with a more efficient conversion rate. Unfortunately on Wednesday past it was a case of déjà vu as Bosco seemed to be rusty and unwilling or unable to deliver the basic footballing skills that were required.
They started enthusiastically with Toby Woods securing a free that was converted in the 12th minute by Micheal Dillon. Indeed Micheal was to be one of the few Bosco lads who provided a consistent and workmanlike performance throughout the entire game.
The scrappy first half ended level but the second period was pretty flat with Bosco missing numerous opportunities including several frees that might have left teams sharing the spoils. Mention should be made of Ciaran Byrne who denied Saval a certain score and Stephen O’Connor who managed to convert a lovely point under pressure. Se Irwin was also in good form harrying at all opportunities and generally making life difficult for his markers.
This is a short match report that reflects that, all in all, this was a pretty dismal and frustrating performance from this squad who have proven before that they have the ability to win the difficult games. A much greater effort and significantly more courage in 50/50 situations will need to be applied if they are to remain in the top slot of this league.

U 12 Girls
The Bosco u12 girls scoring a resounding victory in this Inter County fixture against Crossmaglen Rangers played in the Armagh Athletics Ground as part of the Senior Ladies Ulster Championship final day.
Aoibheann Quinn opened the scoring with a well taken goal following an accurate through ball from Orlagh Burke in midfield. Crossmaglen responded with a great goal and a point from Ciara McSorley. The level of skill and commitment on display by both teams was excellent but the Bosco forwards of Amy O’Hanlon, Aoibheann Quinn and Nicola Downey continued to linked up extremely well and Nicola found the net with goal number two. At this stage Crossmaglen began to apply pressure through Colleen Daly but the Bosco backs of Eden Casey, Sarah O’Hanlon and Rebekah Doyle stood firm and Goalkeeper Rachel Hanna pulled off a number of great saves. Aine McCabe supported the forwards from midfield and her work rate was rewarded when she found the net following good work from Nicola Downey. In the final minutes, with Crossmaglen pressing for a score the Bosco Girls moved the ball quickly down the pitch and Aoibheann Quinn scored her second goal after her attempted fist over the bar came back off the crossbar.
This was a proud day for the Bosco girls and the large group of parents and family who made the trip to Armagh and the girls enjoyed the experience of playing in front of a large championship crowd. There is no doubt that in the future many of these girls will return again to play on Ulster finals day, but this time as senior players in the red and black of County Down.

The Under 10 tournament is being held on Sunday 1st July in St Patrick’s Primary School. Starting at 11:30 a.m. teams confirmed to date include Ballyholland, Mayobridge, Saval and Warrenpoint with one more team to confirm.

Derry cruised into their first Ulster SHC final in eight years with a comprehensive 0-24 to 0-13 victory over Down at Casement Park.
Derry got off to a flying start and hit seven points without reply in the opening 15 minutes, but Down fought back strongly and only four fantastic saves from Darrell McDermott preserved Derry’s comfortable half-time position.
The missed chances proved costly for Gerard Monan’s Down side, who never got into it after the break and finished the game with 13 men after Fintan Conway and Ben Toner were sent off in the final ten minutes.
Chief marksman Ruairi Convery continued to cause serious trouble for the Down defence and finished with nine points to his name. His side will now face Antrim in next Sunday's decider, back at Casement Park.
Derry hit the ground running in today's semi-final with Kevin Hinphey and Ruairi Convery landing two apiece in that early blitz.
Convery was proving a real handful at full-forward for the Oak Leafers, and Oisin McCloskey, Paddy Henry and Paddy Kelly also hit the target as Ger Rogan’s charges raced into a healthy lead.
But Down began to fight back in the second quarter as the game became a personal duel between Paul Braniff and Darrell McDermott.
Four times in fifteen minutes Derry goalkeeper McDermott kept Down at bay from point blank range, three of his incredible saves denying Braniff.
It was still Braniff leading the charge for the Mourne men though, hitting four points before the break, while Paul Keith chipped in with three after moving from midfield to the half-forward line in an early reshuffle.
Convery continued to win a lot of ball for Derry at full-forward and with Alan Grant excellent at wing forward, the Oak Leafers led by 0-13 to 0-07 at the interval.
Down never closed the gap to less than five as Convery continued to terrorise them, finishing with six from play, leading a Derry scoresheet that carried nine different names.
Down offered little outside of Braniff’s contribution and lost their discipline in the final quarter, with Conway earning a second booking and then Toner picked up his second yellow right on the final whistle.

Maria Fox from St John Bosco GAC has been announced as the Newry regional winner in the Hughes Insurance Sports Volunteer Awards.
The Awards are a national awards programme recognising the unsung heroes of local sport in communities across Northern Ireland and 12 regional winners from across the province have been picked.
Hundreds of volunteers from all sports were nominated with the Hughes Insurance Newry Sports Volunteer Award going to Maria.
Maria was chosen for her work with St John Bosco GAC where she has championed the cause of ladies football for many years at the 'Bosco' including coaching, mentoring, sitting on the committee and much more.
Maria works tirelessly at the club across a variety of tasks including holding annual first aid training courses and working with partner organisations.
The aim of the awards was to unearth the true sporting heroes in our communities and were judged by an independent judging panel. Twelve regional winners were selected across all the Hughes branches with each winner being awarded £200 for themselves along with £500 for their club and a bespoke trophy.
Joanne McKeown said “There is some fantastic work being done by sports volunteers in our community and we want to thank everyone who took the time to nominate people they know doing some fantastic volunteer work. We are delighted to announce Maria as our winner for her work with St John Bosco and give her the recognition she deserves.”
All 12 branch winners now go forward to the Northern Ireland finals and the chance to win the Overall Sports Volunteer Award title.

A big win for the Bosco Under 16 Girls this week with their game against Clonduff in Hilltown and don't forget the annual Jack Mackin Memorial U8 Tournament takes place next Sunday 8th July in St Patrick’s P.S. – All welcome.
The Newry u16 Bosco girls travelled to Hilltown in style screaming teenagers on Italo’s bus, as they psyched themselves up for only their second league game of the season. A quick start by Clonduff took the girls by surprise and they found themselves down by a goal and a point. Once the Bosco girls settled, the scores started to come, Olivia McAvoy opened the scoring and centre half forward Pierra Cafolla quickly followed, between Pierra and Olivia they scored 10 first half points. Corner forward Nicole Osbourne, busy wing half forward Terri Quinn added to Bosco’s 1st half scores with a point a piece.
Whilst Bosco began to dominate Clonduff were challenging hard with Midfielders Lydia Leary and Hannah McKevitt spending more time on defensive duties, containing two very lively Clonduff midfielders.

Clonduff started quickly again and a free for over carrying against keeper Roisin Kelly seemed harsh as she had 2 Clonduff girls hanging off her, Clonduff took advantage with a goal just under the bar. At this point the Bosco girls upped their game, today’s captain Clionagh Doherty gave a masterful performance winning break ball and showing her team mates how to get out in front. Taylor McConkey and stand in Full back Sinead Patterson, showed their ball winning skills and really put the Clonduff forwards under pressure forcing a lot of wasteful shooting. Centre half back Carly Gibney took advantage of the space in midfield to surge forward setting up a great passage of play through Pierra, Terri and Olivia which resulted in Vivky Gratton at full forward taking a great goal. Sinead O’hare continued her impressive start to the season defending well and turning the ball over into attack at every opportunity. Niaomh O’Reilly at wing half back after a difficult first half got the better of her marker continually winning break ball. Aoife Jackson set up Vicky Gratton for a second goal before helping herself to a point. As Clonduff midfielders started to lose confidence, Hannah McKevitt began to surge forwards and helped herself to three well taken points. Niamh McCullagh and Milly Gratton came and gave great accounts of themselves helping in the attacks which led to further points for Vicky, Terri and Olivia.
Mentor Valerie Cafolla said after the game said she was delighted with the football the girls played particularly in the second half, under difficult conditions on a very small pitch. Also the girls showed a maturity in how they conducted their warm ups and preparations which bodes well as they develope as a team. Our next game on Sunday will be difficult as we have 6 players missing due to holiday commitments, but with the panel we have we should be ok.

Two defeats in 5 days has left the seniors chasing the leaders at the top of the league Monday 25th June Daragh Cross 1-12 St John Bosco 2-8 Friday 29th June Tullylish 0-12 St John Bosco 0-5 Despite these losses the team are just outside the top places in the division with 2 games in hand. After a run of 6 away games in a row the lads return to Jack Mackin Park for an important game this Friday night, 6th July at 7.30 against Drumgath. A win here against a team above them in the league will get things back on track for the second half of the season. All support welcome.

The St John Bosco U14’s and U12’s hosted visiting club Enniskerry from Wicklow on Saturday on Jack Mackin Park. The Down club hosted the Wicklow men to a skills session delivered by Bosco mentor and ex Down star Brian Irwin and to several blitz style games. This proved to be a wonderful Ulster/Leinster experience with some great football and afterwards all retired to the St John Bosco clubrooms for a well earned bite to eat.
U 14’s
Coming into this game Bosco must have been favourites having recorded a good win against Baileghlas at the last meeting in Kilkeel. That day though the Baileghlas ace, number 9, suffered a knee injury and it was only after that disruption that Bosco ‘woke up’ and started to play with fluency having gone over 15 minutes without a score.
Last Monday June 25th, the sides met again in Jack Mackin Park and Bosco started with much more confidence and displayed the greater hunger and determination.
Winning the toss Baileghlas elected to play into the stiff breeze so Bosco were going to have to notch up a healthy lead in the first half. 3 minutes in and Martin Keenan opened the scoring proceedings with an excellent point from distance and this was quickly followed by a period of play where Baileghlas struggled to get the play away from beyond their own territory. Stephen O’Connor quickly popped over another point and then Devin Quigly worked his way in for a well-placed goal.
The rout in the first half was merciless with Rory McParland, Shane McAteer, Darren McCabe and Paul Hadden scoring seemingly at will. Goals and points followed and left the Baileghlas lads with a mountain to climb.
Coming the day after a famous Down fight-back against Monaghan, the coaches must have been pondering what the second half might bring particularly with a very strong breeze favouring Baileghlas. Baileghlas certainly came out fighting and before long had started a fight-back with a goal and 2 points.
Bosco made some substitutions and steady work from the half and full-backs effectively closed this contest off with 15 minutes remaining on the clock.
Latest news at the time of writing is that Bosco and Longstone are both on 18 points with one game to go. This Monday therefore Bosco must beat Drumgath to have a tilt at league honours. Even at that, it is likely that Longstone will win their next game and then we have the prospect of a real humdinger between these two top contenders.

Under 12 Girls remain top of League Saturday 30th June 2012
SAVAL V BOSCO
The U12 girls continued their impressive form with a victory against Saval on Saturday. With several players away on holidays, this was an opportunity for others in the panel to play from the start and they certainly did not disappoint. In the first half Aine McCabe and Orlagh Burke controlled midfield and Amy O'Hanlon at full forward took some excellent scores. Cliona Mathers showed from great skills and Chloe Kane was excellent in defence. Saval had a period of dominance in the early part of the second half but Nicola Downey & Aoibheann Quinn added further goals to complete the victory.

U 10 Girls
Under 10 Girls first competitive outing Saturday 30th June 2012
SAVAL V BOSCO
The success of the Bosco Girls football was underlined when an under 10s team fielded for the first time against Saval
Both teams played some excellent football and all the skills were on display from players ranging from 6 - 9 years old. Katie Grant in particular had a great game at midfield and Aiofe Murtagh scored two excellent points.
The team was Aimee Murtagh, Aiofe Murtagh, Rachel Murtagh, Clare Furlong, Sinead Quinn, Molly Harte (all cousins) and Layla Fallon, Jenna Wray, Katie Grant, Caithlin Murphy
The game ended in a draw and benefited from the refereeing skills of Maria Fox
The under 10s and under 12s will now take a break until training resumes on Wednesday 18th July at 6.30pm in St Colman’s.
Shields’ Family Memorial U10 Tournament
The Under 10’s held their inaugural Shield’s Family tournament on Sunday 1st July in St Patrick’s Primary School. With 6 teams competing including Ballyholland, Mayobridge, Saval, Glenn, Warrenpoint and the hosts St John Bosco this was a real all Down affair. Played in great weather in the ‘oasis’ of St Patrick’s this was a wonderful tournament enjoyed by all the players and the large contingent of parents who turned up to support their teams and players.
The Cup competition winners were Ballyholland who defeated Saval in the final and the Shield winners were Mayobridge who defeated St John Bosco in the final.

The first training session will take place on Saturday 7th July in Moyganan Warrenpoint at 10.30am.
All players are requested to bring playing equipment, water bottle, and a snack.
