Kellogg’s Cul Camp 2010
St. Patricks PS hosted Newry Bosco's Cul Camp and the Weather Gods were surely shinning as 40 boys and girls enjoyed the 1st class coaching and the highlight of the week was the full days coaching giving by Down Senior Footballer Benny Coulter. Benny had his work cut out as the kids looked for tips and hints to improve their own games. The week concluded with the kids receiving their new Kellogg’s Cul Camp kits and rucksacks.
Naomh Eoin Bosco 2-10 Clann Na Banna 3-7
The seniors were denied a victory in the Intermediate championship on Friday night when Clann Na Banna scored the equalising point with the last kick of the game.
The game started well for the boys and they raced into a 6 point lead at half time. However the opposition clawed their way back into the game in the second half and although the Bosco boys stayed ahead throughout the half they ended up disappointed not to beat the team from the division above them.
The replay has been fixed for Friday 24th August in Mayobridge. (details of throw in time to follow). Before that though the team has an important league game this Friday night in Jack Mackin Park against St John's with a 7.30 throw in.
Bosco Junior Ladies prepared for their upcoming Junior Championship Semi Final on Saturday 18th August with 2 very competitive challenge matches against intermediate teams Mayobridge and Ballymartin. On Monday night Mo Rooney took his team out to the “Bridge” and ran out 7 point winners against a very well drilled and football able home side.
Ballymartin were the visitors to a sunny Jack Mackin Park on Saturday night and the Bosco ladies matched the intermediate league leaders for the full 60 minutes only for a last minute goal from the visitors to deny the home team what would have been a great moral boosting victory. Bosco’s management team of Mo Rooney, Maria Fox and Pat Fox know that next weeks Semi Final in Saval against a very strong Saul team will be made all the more difficult with several key players missing.

Under 12 Football
Phelim Brady’s 2-01 Cor Fhuinseoige 5-07
After a difficult start to the season for Corrinshego under 12s, the team are finally gelling and eased past Phelim Brady’s away from home on Saturday. The team produced a tight display to score five goals and concede little, especially at a rain soaked Darkley.
The first half began with half forward Jonjo Cranney quickly dispatching a goal and a point. He also grabbed the final point of the game as Thomas Davis left the field at half time 1 – 4 to 1 – 0 ahead.
The opening to the second half was soon followed by a fine goal from Vice Captain Kyle Mooney and quickly followed by another two goals from player of the match Jonjo Cranney, who was simply unstoppable. It took the home team a while to recover from this but they added a goal and a point before Kyle Mooney added again to his score with another goal and a point. The Corrinshego tally was added to by Brendan McLoughlin and defender Karl Treanor, who slotted over a point apiece in the final minutes to help Thomas Davis to a well deserved victory.
Dorsey 5-04 Cor Fhuinseoige 11-10
This was two victories in a row for Corrinshego under 12s and this victory from the team was built on selfless play from the entire team. This selflessness saw the scoring spread out among the team and it was Vice Captain Kyle Mooney who led the way with a goal and a point. He soon set up full forward Dean Bradley who also scored a goal and a point in the first half, but it was midfielder Jessica Watters who stood out up front, scoring five goals. Dorsey replied with a goal and four points of their own in the first half but it was little compared to the glut of Corrinshego scores. The second half though saw Dorsey improve and score four goals of their own and could have been much more if it wasn’t for the performance of player of the match Matthew Taggart, who was solid as a rock at the back. The performance of Dean Bradley also pleased his coaches as he added to his tally with two nicely taken points. Defender Karl Treanor also grabbed a point and a goal, as Thomas Davis ran out easy winners.
Under 14 Football
An Port Mór 1-10 Cor Fhuinseoige 3-10
Sometimes words cannot do justice to a football team when they battle against all the odds to come out on top and this was one of those times. This was the toughest game of the season for Corrinshego under 14s, The wet and soggy pitch certainly added to the tough physicality of the game but the pride that filled their coaches for the manner in which the team carried themselves in the face of utter contemptible provocation was really how Thomas Davis won this battle. The first half was a very tight affair, mirrored by the fact that there was not a goal in sight. Corrinshego began with a point from midfielder Dean Falloon and two from Captain Declan Loye, but the opposition came back with 3 points of their own, before taking the lead. Then TJ Hughes added a great score, running fully the length of the pitch, exchanging fist passes, before flashing over the bar. Half forward Adam Loughran also added two fine points before the referee blew the whistle for half time with the home side marginally in front 0-7 to 0-6.
The second half started as the boys would have wished, with Cailum Kilcoyne having a great game at left back and Ryan Gray notching a point, before Caolan Marron finally got into the game with two classy points from the right side of the field. The team went behind again however when they conceded a soft goal. That was until Thomas Davis cranked up the pressure and cut An Port Mor open on three occasions to rattle the back of the net. Adam Loughran adding the killer final blow.The inclusion of Shane Keenan in midfield for the second half worked a treat as he busied himself breaking countless tackles and beginning many attacks and he was undoubtedly player of the match in a second half that saw boys become men! This was another two points in their quest for a league title and let’s hope this night is not wasted in the final run in.
Under 16 Football
Cor Fhuinseoige 4-14 Miceal Ó Doirnin 3-03
Our under 16’s continued their good run of form with a comprehensive win against Miceal Ó Doirnin last Thursday night at Craobh Rua Hurling Field. Conor Jennings made the perfect start with a point from play before Matthew Loughran hit a major after good approach work from Conor Loye and Ryan Courtney. In defence Aaron Cinnamond and Brendan McCorry were constantly creating turnovers creating great chances for our forwards who didn’t spurn them as we finished strongly with a goal from Conor Loye to leave a halftime scoreline of 2-08 to 0-01 in our favour.
In the second half, the visitors battled hard to get back in the contest registering some good scores but our lads kept the scoreboard ticking over which left Ó Doirnin’s a mountain to climb. The introduction of Conor Henry was rewarded with a good point from play. At half forward Conor Rice, Declan Loye & Brian Hobden piled on the pressure hitting great scores from play to leave us well in control 4-14 to 3-03 at the final whistle. Our defence of Keyonis Crozier, Dean Faloon, Aaron Cinnamond and Brendan McCorry must take great credit as this was the foundation of the win, not allowing the opposition any room for taking scores especially in the first half.

It was a proud day for Conor Loye, his family and Club when he was selected to play for Ulster Under 16’s against Dublin at Silverbridge.

Fews area Sinn Fein Councillor Pat Mc Ginn has congratulated all involved with organising and stewarding the Model Duathlon event which was held in Bessbrook on Friday night.
The Councillor was speaking after completing the Duathlon, a 2.3 mile run, 9 mile Cycle and finally another 2.3 run.
"It was a demanding but enjoyable test for all participants, particularly with the outbursts of rain and many thanks to those from the local Bessbrook Community who came out to support and cheer us all on. Ultimately everyone got home safe and sound and many thanks to all who ensured that.
It was great to see stewards including my colleague Cllr Turlough Murphy and members of the Camlough Community Association and Feile Camlocha Group helping out on the night, which is what true community partnership is, and I must say the tea and refreshments in the Bessbrook Institute were very welcome. A great event. A truly memorable sporting and community night" said the elected representative.

Bosco Junior Ladies travelled to St. Johns on Saturday evening to play rivals Saul in the Semi – Final of the Junior Championship.
The Newry girls went into the match as slight favourites but missing several key players and having to travel into East Down for the third tie in a row Mo Rooney was very aware of the task that lay ahead of his team. Saul had crushed St. Michaels in the ¼ final and indeed Rooney was quick to play down his teams tag as favourites and insisted that this match would be a battle from start to finish. Bosco started the quickest and pointed early doors and extended their lead after several minutes of dominance. The first major talking point occurred when the referee red carded a player from each team and this seemed to unsettled the Bosco girls and Saul took control for the last 10 minutes of the half and slotted over some fine scores to leave the score at the interval Bosco 0-9 Saul 0-4.
The 2nd half started with the Bosco extending their lead but Saul fought back again and narrowed the Newry girls lead. Things finally looked to be going the Bosco’s way when full forward Niamh Monaghan fielded a high ball and smashed home a great goal but from the resulting kick out Saul stormed up the field and when the ball was in the box the referee gave a penalty which even the Saul players seemed bemused at the reward of the spot kick which was duly converted to leave 3 points in the game.
The tension was high in St. Johns and whilst both team managers exchanged pleasantries Bosco,s Aio Downey was sin binned for 10 minutes for tackling too hard but Mo Rooney re-shaped his team and shored up his defence against Saul,s attack and when Downey,s 10 minutes was up Nicola O,Gorman seen the side line for the remainder of the game which meant the Bosco had to play the last 10 minutes with 13 players but credit where credit is due the girls never gave an inch and repelled every attack Saul could throw at them.
As the final whistle blew jubilant scenes erupted on and around the pitch as the players, management and supporters hugged in what was more a relieve that the game was over and a county final had been reached.
All of the Bosco team must be praised for a magnificent performance on the night and it would be unfair to single out any 1 player as the entire panel battled for a brilliant victory.
The Ladies now await the winners of Bright v Loughinisland to see who they will play in the final on Saturday 1st September, time and venue to be confirmed.
Bosco U12 Girls Tournament – 25th August 2012
The annual Bosco under 12 Girls Tournament takes place next Saturday in Jack Mackin Park commencing at 10.00am.
Bosco will have two teams involved Bosco “Blue and Bosco Yellow and they will be competing against Clonduff, Saval, Rostrevor, Shane O’Neills, Warrenpoint and Burren
Following the great success of the Junior Ladies team in reaching the Junior Championship Final why not pay a visit to Jack Mackin Park next Saturday and see the next generation of Bosco Girls.

The Paralympic Flame will arrive in Newry tomorrow, Saturday. The Flame should arrive at the St Colman's College complex at 11.30 on Saturday, followed by a juvenile running event organised by the Council and Newry City Runners.
Following the very successful Olympic Torch run and evening ceremony held in Newry at the beginning of June, the Paralympic Flame will travel from Belfast to Newry on Saturday morning and Mayor John McArdle speaking on the event stated he was "delighted that we will be joined on Saturday by the sole surviving member of the first ever Irish Paralympic team"
"Oliver Murphy,from Drogheda County Louth, competed for Ireland in the 1960 Paralympic Games in Rome. Given that Newry and Mourne has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Louth Local Authorities ,it is appropriate that Oliver should join us in our celebrations.".
Oliver Murphy was one of 5 athletes on the Irish Team in 1960. Emboldened by their experiences in Rome, upon their return, they established the Irish Wheelchair Association which, today, has in excess of 20,000 members. Oliver and the Council's own Disability Sports Officer, Ciara Lowe, have also been selected as ambassadors for the District at an event In Stormont earlier on Saturday to mark the arrival of the Paralympic flame to the North of Ireland.

Amongst those off to London this weekend to attend the London Paralympics 2012 is Newry and Mourne Councillor Pat Mc Ginn.
The Sinn Fein elected representative said that he was looking forward to attending the historic Games and in particular supporting all those athletes from Ireland.
"Young Laurence Mc Givern from Rostrevor is representing Ireland in the 100m backstroke and it will be a special moment for him, his family and many of us over to support him when he takes to the pool on Friday morning" said Pat who continued"I also have tickets for the Wheelchair Basketball, a game which has it all, skill,speed and indeed the odd bit of aggression! ".
Concluding Pat who will be attending the Games with family and friends said that he looked forward to support more brilliant athletes from Ireland in the Paralympics and that he hoped the games would show to all irrespective of their circumstances that they could get involved in sport.
Even in 2007, as you can see from the picture, Laurence McGivern was looking forward to the London Olympics when local business people were behind the Oriel 2012 initiative which could have seen our area being used as a training centre for this years athletes but sadly it didn't come to pass.

St. John Bosco U14 Boys South Down Championship
Bosco took on Tullylish away on Monday August 13th in the opening game of the South Down Championship.
Bosco won the toss and started brightly with the first score of the evening coming after 3 minutes from a free converted by Michael Dillon. The Tullylish kick-outs and distribution were not particularly effective and Bosco maximised their opportunities that this presented. The first goal came off the boot of Devin Quigley and in truth this was a one sided contest with Bosco showing the greater hunger.
Once the lads got settled into a grove and shook off the rust of the layoff since the league win they showed some great link up play, a good example being Paul Hadden laying the ball off to Shane McAteer for a sweet point. Also the Bosco defence were disciplined often forcing Tullylish into conceding frees in the danger zone which in most cases were converted.
The midfield pairing of Martin Keenan and Micheal Dillon showed some great form running at the Tullylish defence and often tearing holes right through the centre to pick off scores.
In contrast the Bosco defence were robust and for the most part disciplined and this contest closed on a scoreline of:

On Monday, 20th August 2012, 7:15pm St. John Bosco U14 Boys faced Baileghlas at home. The visitors don’t have an impressive track record against the Bosco but they approached this game with a high degree of determination.
The first score tonight was a lovely move from Shane McAteer into Devin Quigley who converted an excellent point. Although guilty of wasteful play, dropping the ball short to the keeper and some crazy wides it always looked grim for the visitors.
10 minutes in Devin sent a long distance rasper to the back of the net and Shane McAteer scored a great point from a very difficult angle. Ruairi Lavery also scored an excellent point while under the close attention of two Baileghlas defenders.
Sé Irwin harried and worked really hard and Ciaran Byrne can always be depended on to intimidate on onrushing attacker, indeed he made some excellent catches and one on the goal line.
Rory McParland also was solid and forced his way forward from defence hand passing the ball to Micheal Dillon who duly converted the point.
This was a convincing win and takes the Bosco U14 boys into a semi-final berth which will be played on Wednesday 29th August against either Longstone or Drumgath. There’s no doubt that the lads are improving but much bigger tests against tougher competition lie ahead.

“Successful Bosco Blitz…..Successful Bosco Team”
Bosco girls won the Plate competition and Rostrevor won the shield
The fourth annual St John Bosco GFC under 12 girls Tournament took place on Saturday and was bigger and better than before with eight teams involved including:-
Shane O Neill’s, Burren, Rostrevor, Warrenpoint, Clonduff, Saval and the two home teams Bosco ‘Blue’ and Bosco ‘Yellow’.
In total over 130 children took part with each team playing each other in a two section format to determine the semi finalists for the Shield competition and the Plate competition. With over 30 players Bosco entered two teams and the Bosco ‘Blue’ team proved to be formidable opponents with excellent performances in the league section matches from Aine McCabe, Nicola Downey and Captain Orlagh Burke. In the Semi final they played the Bosco ‘Yellow’ led by Kerry Lavery and this was an entertaining contest with Bosco ‘Blue’ coming out on top. Burren defeated Saval by a single point in the other semi final to set up a final encounter with Bosco.
The Bosco u12 Girls had beaten Burren twice this year in the league but this was a final and top performances were required by all the girls. Bosco started well and supported by a strong wind they scored 1.05 without reply. The goal scorer was Nicole Cunningham with points shared by Nicola Downey, Aine McCabe and Orlagh Burke. In the second half Burren narrowed the gap but the player of the final was undoubtedly Rachel Hanna at full back for the Bosco who made a number of excellent interceptions. At the final whistle there were jubilant scenes among the large crowd of parents.
Rostrevor defeated Shane O’Neills in the Shield final by a single point with an opportunist goal in the last minute of a great final.
U10s
The U10s shine at the Glenn Tournament
The U10s met up at St Colman’s College on Sunday morning to travel out to John Martin Park for the U10 Tournament and 18 players and parents made the trip in glorious sunshine out the Belfast Road to a wonderful tournament.
With games against hosts Glenn, Saval and Rostrevor the mentors Kevin Hughes and Paul McCormack were able to rotate players and everybody got at least 30 minutes of football. David McCreesh, James Quinn and Keelan Byrne and Cormac Flannigan starred in nets for the team in royal and amber. Michael MacNamara, David McCreesh, Matthew Monroe and Ethan McGibbon were tasked with man marking roles during the games. They stuck to their tasks manfully and kept their markers scoreless – credit to their skills and dedication.
There were several magnificent scores Pól Óg McCormack, Ruarai O’Hare, Jack O’Hare and Nathan Gribben all finding the net but the score of the tournament goes to Cathal McStay who rose at the back post to meet a cross and fisted the ball to the back of the Ballyholland net.
Many congratulations to the Glenn club for a great tournament and excellent catering. The players and parents of the St John Bosco were unanimous in their praise and all went home well satisfied with the football and the food.
St John Bosco Gaels
St Johns Bosco Gaels football camp 28th – 30th August 10:00 a.m. -12:00 noon in St Patricks Primary School. Cormac Venny from the Down GAA Board with St John Bosco mentors Paul McCormack, Maria Fox, Mo Rooney and several of the senior boys and junior girls are mentors for the camp.
Film Nights
Film nights continue on Monday’s at 7:00 p.m. in the Cussack Lounge for two more weeks – finishing on the 3rd September because it’s almost back to school!
