Following on from the success of Northern Ireland’s first ever Etape cycling event in 2012 Councillor Michael Ruane, Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council, is delighted to announce that the event is back for Autumn 2013 and encourages local cyclists sign up to go the extra mile for children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent.
The Etape event is inspired by the famous mountain stage of the Tour de France and will see participants take on either 70 or 45 miles of stunning mountain roads.
The event will take place on 27th October and is organised by Pioneer Group in conjunction with Newry and Mourne District Council. Local business Chain Reaction Cycles is also lending their support to the endurance challenge by offering goody bags for all participants, great prizes for King of the Mountain stages and for top fundraisers.
Mayor or Newry, Councillor Michael Ruane said; “We are delighted to see the return of the Etape Mourne for Autumn 2013. Following on from the success of the first event which takes cyclists through the picturesque landscapes, which will not only provide a stunning location, but also a challenging terrain which will test all abilities. Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced rider, there is something for you.”
“We are proud to be involved with this unique event and offer a different challenge for the growing number of cyclists in Northern Ireland. I encourage anyone who has not considered an Etape before to get involved and raise money for charity at the same time.”
Johnny Davis, Pioneer Group who is organising the event believes the Etape is a totally unique challenge; “As a cyclist you are always looking for the next big challenge, everyone wants to complete an Etape and what better place than here on our doorstep, in the Mourne Mountains.
“The extra incentive is that participants will be raising money for CLIC Sargent’s Homes from Home Appeal in Northern Ireland, an extremely worthwhile cause. That will be a great motivator when the mountainous roads become tough!”
Eimear McCooey, Corporate Fundraising Manager at CLIC Sargent said; “We are delighted to be the charity partner for the Etape Mourne and are thrilled to hear that cyclists will be supporting the NI Homes from Home Appeal.”
“We really encourage participants to help raise some much needed funds, no matter how big or small. By taking part in this event and supporting CLIC Sargent NI you will help make a real difference to families affected by childhood cancer. All of the funds raised will go towards building two Homes from Home beside the main cancer treatment hospitals so that families can stay free of charge and be close to their at an already difficult time.”
Neil McGuigan from Chain Reaction Cycles said; “The Etape Mourne is growing to be a simply phenomenal event in a stunning location that is why Chain Reaction Cycles are proud to support this event in its second year. It is important that the flagship store on Boucher Road supports and invests in local events for local cyclists, as we take so much from the local cycling community, it is essential that we also give something back and this is the ideal way. We look forward not just to being involved in 2013 but for years to come as the event gets larger and stronger, and becomes one of the major cycling calendar events of the year, and without a doubt the great Northern Irish weather will be kind on October 27th!”

Ulster Junior Hurling Championship
Craobh Rua Camlocha 3-9 Monaghan Harps 0-10
Craobh Rua Camlocha, Armagh Junior Hurling Champions progressed into the Ulster Club Championship semi final with a gritty victory over Monaghan Harps in Crossmaglen. Three second half goals by Miceal Bradley, Kyle Kane and Fionnán Burns, decide the game after Monaghan Harps finished the first half with an 0-8 to 0-5 lead. The young Craobh Rua side seemed to be struggling with a bigger more physical Monaghan side but a determined effort from all ensured that the Armagh Champions would take their place in the semi final. Young Kyle Kane showed great speed and talent, whilst the experienced Eoghan Robb proved a steadying influence on his side with some wonderful points from play and frees. Newry 2’s 3-3 Banbridge 2’s
It was a warm sunny Saturday in Newry for the hotly contested derby of the two rival clubs. Both teams had squads of 14 players Banbridge with a mainly school boy team against an experienced Newry side. Banbridge began the game as expected with sharp passing and controlled the tempo and quickly opened the scoring through a short corner which went under the Newry keeper’s foot. Ban’s second came from another short corner which was drag flicked into the bottom corner. Ban then scored their 3rd just before half time with a goal line scramble that was turned home in mid air past 2 Newry defenders and the keeper. After the restart Newry regrouped and were a lot sharper, now starting to win more the 50/50 balls to try and get themselves back into the game. Newrys 1st was scored from a short corner when David Hogg dribbled past the first Banbridge runner and smashed the ball low and deflected into the goal from the Banbridge goal keeper unable to do anything about it. Newry then started to dominate play with some smart hockey and where rewarded was a individual piece of inspiration from David Hogg again who dribbled past 2 Banbridge defenders and placed a ball in the top right of the goal with a wonder strike leaving the Banbridge keeper in no mans land. Newry’s 3rd goal came 2 minutes before the final whistle when Nigel McGuffin brought down an aerial ball inside the Ban 25 yard line and slipped in Adam Foster unmarked who then rounded the ban goal keeper and slotted the ball home for the equaliser for his fist ever 2nd X1 goal.
Team: Warren Adams, Ben Scott, Andrew Henning, John Lawson, Andrew Baird, Scot Blakely, Adam Foster, Darren Liggett, Ivan Tombs, Simon McCafferty, Sam Henry, Nigel McGuffin, Daryl Barlow and David Hogg.
PSNI 1's 0-3 Newry 1's
Newry travelled to Stormount to take on PSNI in their third league fixture of the season. A game against newly promoted PSNI was always going to be a physical affair and this is how the game played out. Newry tried to play as they have done so far this season with smooth passing hockey, however this was difficult with a lot of heavy challenges and persistent fowling which was knocking Newry out of their stride. Even with this Newry deservedly went one up with a smart half volley finish from Kyle McCombe when the ball broke in the centre of the circle. Newry soon made it too when David England slapped a low hard shot into the bottom corner after a great solo run from McCombe who turned provider this time. Newry were good value for their two nil lead at half time.
Newry came out in the second half again knowing they were going to be on the receiving end of more hefty challenges with PSNI not disappointing. John Taylor continued his good early season goal scoring form when he scored though a short corner to give Newry a 3 goal lead. Newry had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead but a mixture of poor finishing and great goalkeeping kept the Newry men at bay. Newry's toughest test of the season comes in their next game when they travel to South Antrim in a re arranged league fixture.

Sunday 13th October
St John Bosco U16s
Leo Hughes Memorial Shield 29th September 2013
Thomas Davis GAG Corrinshego V St. John Bosco GAC
Saval GAC V Carrickcruppen GAC
This year for the U16’s could be described as going in fits and starts, some great wins in the league and gut wrenching losses when the Bosco should have been out of sight. The account for the Division 2 league stood at 4 wins and 6 losses and a mid-table finishing berth.
The Championship proved a little contentious with Bosco being nominated to play in the ‘A’ group so this was going to be a tough draw. Nevertheless after a slow opening first half against Mayobridge the Bosco lads fought back from 11 points down and only lost this game by the narrowest of margins.
It was important then that this group of players showed that they can deliver good, full match performances and not just the odd good half and the Leo Hughes Shield was the last opportunity to do that and secure silverware in 2013.
The opening game saw Bosco take on Corrinshego and after a jittery start by both teams it was Corrinshego who opened the score from a free after Adam Rowntree was deemed to have committed the foul. Bosco’s first attack also secured a free which saw Matthew McKevitt’s effort drift to the left and wide.
It was up to Gary Crummy to settle nerves for Bosco when he powered through the opposition defence and slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Seamus Brady was excellent in nets for Bosco and throughout this contest the Bosco defence kept him well covered. Further goals followed for Bosco from Martin Keenan and an excellent link up between Matthew and Gary Crummy saw Bosco net goal number 3, excellent points flowed from the boots of Jordan Pinnington, Caoilte Jackson (Capt.) and Joshua Monroe. By half time Bosco were in control and unlike some earlier games this year, they never relinquished their lead and ran out worthy semi-final winners.
In the other semi, Saval fell to the sword of hosts Carrickcruppen in an entertaining and flowing game, where Carrickcruppen’s superior fielding and forwards shooting ability saw them emerge victorious to face Bosco.
Bosco’s Oisin Carnegie and Micheal Dillon took control of matters in the middle of the field in this contest and forwards Martin Keenan, Devin Quigley and Jordan Pinnington all gave excellent displays of smart football. The Carrickcruppen attack which was so effective against Saval had a torrid time dealing with this Bosco defence. Aidan MacNamara and Daire Rooney were very strong in the wing half back and harried tirelessly delivering accurate, quality ball to the Bosco forwards. It was this pattern of turnover and fast, direct counterattack that allowed Bosco to dominate matters between the two 45’s.
Defenders Ciaran Burns, Lucas Rossiter and David Magee also deserve mention as do forwards Devin Quigley who slotted over a couple of superb points from tight angles. The U14’s also deserve a special mention and credit for their support on the day.
There were numerous examples of good link up play and manly, sporting football delivered by all participants at this tournament and it was St. John Bosco who secured the win on a final scoreline of: St. John Bosco 3:12 Carrickcruppen 1:08
Following the final the Hughes family presented the Leo Hughes Memorial Shield to Bosco Captain, Caoilte Jackson who spoke eloquently in his acceptance. Carrickcruppen, who were wonderful hosts and sporting runners up, then provided tea, sandwiches and snacks which the boys and coaches gladly devoured!
St John Bosco U12 Girls
U12 Girls secure the treble with Clonduff Tournament win!
Sunday 6th October 2013
With the Margaret King Cup and Newry & Mourne CO-OP Shield already won this year this exceptional Bosco u12 girls team completed the treble on Sunday when they secured the Martin Woods Cup as the overall winners of the Clonduff tournament.
The girls recorded wins against the hosts Clonduff and Rostrevor to set up a final against the holders and Tournament favourites Carryduff. Carryduff are undoubtedly the kingpins of Ladies Football but the Bosco girls rose to the occasion to win by a 4 point margin due in no small part to the excellent performances by Aine McCabe in marking Carryduff’s best player and Chloe Quinn who scored a great individual goal in the final.
Eden Casey stepped up to collect the Cup to the delight of the large number of parents and supporters.

Kane Tucker a Member of The St John Bosco A.B.C Newry is on his way to Denmark after being selected to Box in the famous HSK Cup multinational tournament.
To be selected at this level is a great achievement for any one. However at this point Kane is in high demand as he has been selected for both the Ulster, and Irish squads where his younger brother Jake trains also.
The amount of time and effort Kane has dedicated to the sport is really paying off he is a young man with a bright future. He has the full backing and support of the full team at St John Bosco ABC.
Gerard Moore from the Club said "We will continue to develop Kane in the club as well as his training with the Ulster squad on Saturdays and the Irish squad on Sundays.
"Training with the likes of Irish High Performance coach Zaur Antia and his team of international coaches, and local legend and international boxer Adrian Patterson along with the rest of the coaches at the club the sky’s the limit.
"We know the People of Newry and Mourne will get behind this young man and the St John Bosco Boxing club in blazing a trail in the world of boxing which will see Newry as an epicentre of future boxing stars. With the success of St John Bosco’s boxers and our plans to develop a Centre of boxing excellence we are sure of future success."
Gerard added "The club would like to wish Ryan McKeown luck in his comeback fight in the Antrim intermediates next week in Belfast. Ryan is a great prospect for the club and we are sure Ryan will be the next senior boxer the town has produced. Ryan is a tremendous asset to the club with the younger boxers watching and learning from the way he trains."
If you can help, the club has kindly been donated a very large portacabin from a local builder and are looking for anyone who can help in the transporting of this from one end of Newry to the Bosco youth centre on the Armagh Road.
Down County Board have announced their support for Aogan O Fearghail in his bid to become President of the GAA.
Paul Rooney, Down PRO added "We believe that Aogan who has served his County and his Province so well in many and varied roles will bring with him to the position the values that reflect fully the ethos of our Association.
"We in Down would hope that Ulster will unite behind Aogan as he attempts to hold the high office of Uachtarán of Cumann Lúthchleas Gael.
"We send Aogan and his family our full support and good wishes for the months ahead in the quest to become the 38th President of the GAA."
A recent seminar between the PSNI and Ulster GAA was welcomed by both groups when it took place in Cookstown at the weekend.
The aim of the event was to develop working relationships between both organisations, improve skills and build expertise in the areas of health and safety, spectator behaviour, emergency planning, sporting legislation and supporting victims of crime. The training was delivered by Sport NI and PSNI personnel.
Representatives from the counties across Ulster and PSNI officers were presented with information on health and safety, licensing, inter-agency working, liaison with council, changes to legislation and banning orders. They all engaged in lively debate and discussion around each topic.
The participants also took part in an emergency planning exercise which enabled them to put their new found skills into practice.
PSNI E District Service Delivery Superintendent, William Dodds commented: "This was a very successful event which allowed us to share expertise and develop a partnership approach towards making sport safer for families, supporters and players. We want to engage with all sporting bodies and welcome the opportunities this seminar provides us with to develop relationships which strengthen ties, increase awareness and contribute to reducing crime and the fear of crime".
Ulster GAA President, Martin McAviney stated "As Ulster’s largest sporting organisation that caters for approximately 350,000 spectators on an annual basis in Provincial fixtures alone, it is important that we follow best practice in event management, planning, health and safety. This joint event ensures that we can continue to share best practice in event management with all the statutory authorities across the GAA and I thank the PSNI, An Garda Síochána and all emergency services for their continued support and input into the management of our major events".
Armagh Junior hurling Champions Craobh Rua certainly returned in top form from Dungannon at the weekend when they beat highly fancied Tyrone Champions, Shamrocks to win their way through to the Ulster Club Championship final.
It was a truly solid team performance that enthralled the large crowd of Craobh Rua supporters who had travelled to Dungannon for the game.
The game commenced with a quick Ryan Lewis point but the Strabane based Tyrone Champions, rocked the Armagh Champions when they immediately responded with a scrappy goal to take the lead. This would be the only time that Craobh Rua would not be in front in the game. Led by Eoghan Robb, Kyle Kane, Fiachra Bradley and Conor Devlin, the Camloch hurling club took command of the game and goals from Robb and Devlin ensured that they enjoyed a 2-17 to 2-6 half time lead. Despite fears of a Shamrocks wind aided fight back in the second half, the Craobh Rua side carried the game to their opponents and great scores from Fiachra Bradley and Eoghan Robb ensured the Camloch Club would rightly take its place in the Ulster final, which is due to be played on Sunday week.
Ryan Lundy in goals, Mickey Lewis, Mark Fleming and Sean Casey showed great skill and strength in the heart of the Craobh Rua defence as were Hugh Hanna, Michael Garvey and Micheal Doran. The experienced Paul Cunningham and Micheál Bradley helped keep a coolness and calmness amongst the younger hurlers whilst Fionnán Burns, Paddy O Connor, Joseph O Connor, Colm Creaney and David Treanor all made telling contributions to this famous victory. Speaking after the game team manager Patrick Brady talked of the great pride he and all involved with the Hurling Club had in this team. “They richly deserve this victory. The focus now is on the Ulster Final” said Patrick
Club Chairperson Laurence Bradley thanked all for their support and said that he and those involved with Craobh Rua Camlocha were looking forward to participating in the Ulster Final. “This squad of players are in the Ulster Final on merit, they have done their Club, community, Parish and families proud.” said Laurence and he continued “On behalf of Craobh Rua I would like to thank all those local GAA Clubs who sent us best wishes and have supported us throughout not only this year but throughout the years. We hope as many as possible will travel to the Final to support us”.
