Yesterday's Newry City Triathlon was a tremendous success in it's very first year with local man Barry Convery from Newry Triathlon Club impressively coming in at the head of the pack ahead of former all Ireland junior Triathlon and Duathlon champion Aaron Deane in second and Irish Ironman record holder Liam Dolan in third.
The Triathlon was part of the Newry Festival of Water.
The race took in a 750 Metre Swim a 20km Cycle finishing with a 5km run and Barry completed the Triathlon in 1:01:22 with an 11:35 time for his swim, 30:03 for his cycle and 17:32 for his run.
Taking place at the Albert Basin including a circuit around the city streets it made full use of Newry's natural beauty and no doubt will be a major contender in years to come.
Also taking part were Conor Murphy MP and Photographer Peter Clarke competed as part of a team.

Bosco Annual U12 Girls Tournament Sat 31st August 2013
U12 Girls Win 2nd Trophy in a week!
The Bosco U12 Girls continued their successful season by capturing a 2nd trophy in a week. The sixth year of the club’s highly successful u12 girl’s tournament saw teams from Clan na Gael, Clonduff, Saval, Dromintee, Warrenpoint and Rostrevor join the hosts in a festival of football. Over 120 girls took part and Jack Mackin Park was a great sight with flags along the boundary fence and sunshine through the day.
The Bosco team had early victories in the league format against Rostrevor and Warrenpoint (Blue) but was narrowly defeated by Clan Na Gael. In the semi final they easily accounted for Warrenpoint (White) to set up a final against Rostrevor who had beaten Dromintee in their Semi Final.
In the first half of the final the girls had a favorable wind and took an early lead through a Ciarrai Lavery point, followed by further points from Chloe Quinn and Nicola Downey. Rostrevor responded with two good points to leave the narrowest of margins between the teams and Bosco facing into a strong second half wind.
The true quality of this young team was demonstrated in the second half as they worked the ball up the pitch with crisp short passing and tagged on three more points without reply. Rostrevor tried hard to find a goal to get them back in the final but to no avail and Eden Casey, Niamh Burns and Aimee O’Hanlon were all superb at the back. Aoibheann Quinn as tournament captain stepped up to receive the trophy from Maria Fox.
In the Shield final Warrenpoint accounted for Clan Na Gael by 3 points and Captain Annie Howlett collected the trophy to much delight from her team mates and mentors.
The girls now have a chance to make it a hat trick of victories at the 16 team Carryduff Tournament on Saturday 14th September

St John Bosco U10s
Wednesday 28th August St John Bosco vs. An Riocht venue St Colman’s
A mid week game for the U10’s on the full size grass pitch with both teams fielding 17 players this was a fast, entertaining, energy sapping game of football for the U10 footballers.
With several players missing due to injury and holidays the Bosco mentors re-jigged the team and put Calim Gray and James Boyle into midfield, Pól Óg McCormack into nets, Padraig Caldwell and Rory McAleavy into defence, Cormac Flannigan at centre half forward and a full forward line of Dessie McAleavy, Aaron Downey and Cormac White.
This was a hard physical encounter for the young Bosco players who coped well with a strong An Riocht line up. With 1 minute to go James Boyle made amends for several earlier misses and 3 shots that hit the posts when he rifled a shot into the top corner to leave the sides level at the final whistle.
Sunday 1st September St John Bosco vs. Mayobridge venue Mayobridge
With 19 players St John Bosco were able to field their usual two teams Gaels and Ógs for the customary 9 or 10 a side two ‘cross field’ 30 minute games before the big game of 30 minutes full field game.
In the Ógs game captain Josh Hanna was outstanding between the posts and the full back line of Joe Hanna, and Shea Malone kept their Mayobridge players under check. Matthew Rice and Captain (birthday boy) Guy Wallace controlled mid field providing the ammunition for forwards Aaron Downey, Dessie McAleavy and Cormac White to fire over several excellent scores.
In the Gaels game Cormac White, Rory McAleavy, Aidan O’Hare and Nathan Gribben were solid at the back thwarting the Mayobridge forward line. Forwards Calum, Joshua Madigan and Johnny O’Hare piled on the pressure and despite some wonderful Mayobridge defending were able to keep the Bosco boys in front.

Tomás Dáibhis 8-13 Baile Mhic An Aba 1-10
01 Meán Fómhair 2013
Thomas Davis Under 16’s qualified for the final of the Under 16 Shield with a comprehensive win over Ballymacnab last Sunday morning at Craobh Rua Hurling field. We started very well with points from play from Lee Courtney & Conor Jennings before the visitors registered their first score. Playing with the wind advantage in the first half, we began to make full use of it with good ball in to corner forwards Caolan Marron & Declan Loye who were causing havoc for their respective markers hitting a goal each leaving us 2-04 to 0-02 ahead on the 15 minute mark. Ballymacnab pushed hard for equalising scores but great defensive work from Shane Keenan, Aaron Cinnamond & Dean Faloon always kept the visitors shooting from distance or creating turnovers to put good quick ball in our forward line. Up front we were proving hard to handle with some great support play which allowed further goals from Declan Loye & Conor Rice as we finished out the half strongly leaving it 5-09 to 0-06 in our favour.
On the restart we upped the ante once again with points from Conor Jennings & Jordan Mackey to make sure the Ballymacnab comeback wasn’t on the cards. The visitors played route one using the elements to their advantage but time and again our fullback line was solid with Brendan McCorry & Dean Faloon first to the ball every time clearing their lines. Further scores from Declan Loye & Caolan Marron ensured we were heading to the final but fullmarks to Ballymacnab as they battled to the end and were awarded a penalty which after the initial save was rebounded to the net. The introduction of Matthew Loughran & Jonny Tumility brought freshness into our play which Ballymacnab had no answer allowing us to seal out the game with a Jordan Mackey goal. Next up is Grange in the league.
Tomás Dáibhis 4-18 Baile Ó hAgáin 1-12
Thomas Davis Under 16’s picked another 2 league points in their All County league campaign with a good win over Ballyhegan last Thursday night at St.Pauls school pitch. Both sides started very well with some excellent scores from play and on the 10 minute mark there was little between the sides with the score 0-03 to 0-02 in our favour. A few positional changes were made and our lads began to play more attacking football with some excellent ball being played to corner forwards Caolan Marron & Conor Jennings who were showing well and hit some great scores from play and earned numerous frees that put us in a more commanding position. At midfield we were getting the better of the exchanges with Declan Loye, Keyonis Crozier & Lee Courtney all adding to our tally as we enjoyed a 3-10 to 0-04 halftime lead.
On the restart the visitors really put it up to us as they tried hard to get back into the game and really were unlucky as 1 goalbound shot rebounded of the crossbar & a second was well saved by keeper Ronan McMahon. Both sides traded points throughout the half and a fourth goal from Lee Courtney more or less sealed the victory. A hard earned victory with some great performances throughout the team that really kept Ballyhegan second to the ball for long periods. In defence Shane Keenan, Breandáin McCorry & Aaron Cinnamond were superb showing great battling qualities. Declan Loye & Lee Courtney were once again to the fore and up front Caolan Marron, Keyonis Crozier & Conor Jennings all did well. Next game is Sunday 01 September, 12am against Ballymacnab at Craobh Rua in the semi-final of the Shield.

MATCH REPORT
The minors travelled away to Lurgan to face St Pauls in the 1/4 final of the championship. Having already played St Pauls at home and won expectations were high. The home side started the quicker with two quick points as the boys started very nervous. It wasn't until the twelfth minute that a run from Conor Loye and a long pass to brother Decky resulted in the green flag being raised. The two sides exchanged points throughout the first half with some fine points coming from the boot of Phelim Finnegan and Charlie Magill. A defensive error resulted in St Pauls being awarded a penalty with the ball being dispatched high into the back of the net from the resulting kick to bring the sides level. The game ebbed and flowed and the minors raised the green flag once again with a well worked goal from Charlie Magill. St Pauls kept taking their points and the final score of the first half came from the boot of midfielder Conor Loye to leave the boys leading 2-4 1-5. Having played better all season than they showed in the first half the team took to the field with theirs managers halftime team talk ringing in their ears. The first ten minutes into the second half two quick goals from Sean Thompson and Ryan McSherry put the team in control and at this stage it looked like the game could be over. As the old saying goes its never over until the final whistle and this was to be proved right, St Pauls to their credit kept plugging away and some wasteful possession was giving St Pauls new found belief to claw their way back into the game with two quick goals. With the minors one point ahead with two mins injury time played a long high ball was kicked into the square and the ball somehow ended up in the back of the net, with no time left on the clock the boys tried everything and nearly snatched the game back with the last kick of the game going over the bar to leave the minimum between the teams at the end.
4-8 4-7. Although bitterly disappointed at the end this minor team can hold their heads high playing some attractive football all year.

O’Hagan Memorial Tourament
Lisummon, Co. Armagh Saturday 7th September 2012
On Saturday morning the heavens opened and the Summer was finally at an end, with constant rain and a biting cold wind , it could have been easier to stay both at home and in bed. But credit the 10 young footballers who represented their club with pride.
Our first match was against the bigger and more experience Granemore side, but with Ronan Casey and Danny Shields performing well at midfield, we went in at half-time a point apiece. Sean Dowdall pulled off some great saves and his brother Emmett battled hard at half- back. In the end we lost 0-4 to 0-1. This was our first ever encounter with St. Mary’s Granemore at this level.
Game 2 saw us battle with old foes Forkhill who took a quick 0-2 lead, but Ronan Casey and Jarlath Jennings had Corrinshego on level terms by half time. With Adam Travers suffering an injury he replaced Sean Dowdall in goals and Sean in turn dominated midfield and scored two great goals, however , goals are worth only 1 point in this tournament rules. Young Martin McKinley also got on the scoresheet when he pulled on a loose ball and drilled it to the back of the net. In the end Forkhill and Corrinshego exchanged points to leave the score 0-5 a piece. Our next game in section ‘C’ saw us battle with St. Joesph’s and we knew a a big win over St. Joesph’s would get us into the Shield final, so Corrinshego were determined from the start with both Rony Casey and Jarlath Jennings performing heroics from the start. Danny Shields and Emmett Dowdall covered every blade of grass as Corrinshego won 0-8 to 0-1.
Corrinshego got a bye in the final were they met semi-final victors Whitecross who were strong in their earlier games. From the start the full back line of Holly Loye and Lauren Travers caught some great balls and set up the ever improving Jarlath Jennings for scores. Sean Dowdall was a constant presence at midfield while forwards Martin McKinley and Liam O’Brien never gave up on any lost cause and Adam Travers was reassured and confident in the Corrinshego goals. At the final whistle Corrinshego joint captains Jarlath Jennings and Danny Shields received the O’Hagan Shield on a scoreline of 0-5 to 0-3. Thomas Davis Corrinshego would like to than the Lisummon GFC Club for their well organised tournament and hospitality and we look forward to 2014 when we strive to retain the Shield.

Under 14 Championship Shield
Corrinshego v St Michaels Newtown
3-14 V 2-9
Corrinshego u14s booked their place in the shield final over a resolute Newtownhamilton side who worked very hard throughout to stop the home side progressing, but it was Corrinshego's forward play and place kicking, which has been the bedrock of their season so far, that enabled them to advance into the final.
The home side began like a house on fire with full back Niall McShane marauding forward at every opportunity to score a goal and a point in the opening 5 mins, however it was this open and attacking play that led to the away team's opening goal. The away side also added a few points to their total before Corrinshego struck back through half forward Ryan Gray, who struck the back of the net before adding another 2 points to leave the score 2-7 to 1-4 at the break.
The second half was a much tighter affair at times, especially in the opening ten minutes. The visitors placed two points over the bar before our own lads responded with 2 points from vice captain Adam Loughran. Ryan Connolly quickly added a well taken point, before Newtown scored their second goal, which struck more impetus into the home side, culminating in a fine goal from midfielder Conor Jennings. This goal and a great point from substitute Brendan McLoughlin sealed the win, before Adam Loughran added 2 points to the final total.
A well deserved win for the boys which gives them the chance to win their first piece of silverware this year.
Well done lads and good luck!

Tomás Dáibhis 5-08 An Ghráinseach 2-06
Thomas Davis Under 16’s continued their unbeaten league run with a hard fought win over Grange at St.Pauls school pitch last Thursday night. Grange started very well with a high ball into the square which was flicked to the net on their very first attack, a dream start for the visitors but fullmarks to the Thomas Davis lads who dug deep to register 4 points from play to put us into the lead for the first time on the 15 minute mark. At midfield Lee Courtney was outstanding with great fielding & winning breaking ball alongside his midfield partner Keyonis Crozier who probably played his best game ever in the maroon jersey who constantly broke & overturned the ball in our favour all night long. Both sides exchanged points before we finally got in for a well worked goal from full forward Declan Loye to give us a 5 point margin at half time 1-07 to 1-02.
Although leading at half time we hadn’t played well and everybody was well aware that nothing less than a 100% effort wouldn’t be good enough as Grange looked dangerous each time they got the ball and this was soon realised as they hit a goal and point to reduce the deficit to the minimum. Once gain we had to dig deep to get scores, up front Declan Loye was in top form forcing the visitors to concede a couple of frees which allowed us to increase our lead to 3 points with 15 minutes to go but Grange came back trying to force the goal and only for some great stops from keeper Ronan McMahon the ending could have been very different. Heading into the last 5 minutes we held a slender lead of 2-08 to 2-06 but we finished strongly with great defensive work to overturn possession and a long ball to Declan Loye was finished to the net. This turned the game as we finished with 2 further goals from Caolan Marron & Lee Courtney to put a flattering look on the scoreline. A great result from the lads who dug deep at various times to make the hard tackles and win the breaking ball. In defence keeper Ronan McMahon had a great game with Shane Keenan, Aaron Cinnamond & Breandáin McCorry all working hard. In Midfield Lee Courtney was outstanding with a great exhibition of high fielding against very able opponents alongside Keyonis Crozier who battled & tackled for every ball. Up front Declan Loye was also outstanding with a personal tally of 2-02 on the night alongside Conor Jennings who gave a very committed performance against bigger opposition.

The Seniors would like to thank St Michaels Kilean for their hospitality in hosting a superb tournament.
Field Development
All the hard work can finally be seen. The pitch has now been seeded and hopefully we shall see some green grass pretty soon.
St John Bosco Seniors
The seniors warmed up for their championship quarter final with the last home game of the season against Saul. The Saul men needed points to avoid relegation and showed they were eager for the battle by arriving 2 hours before throw in. However it was our lads who got off to the best start. Paddy Magill and Decky Byrne sent over the black spot and Neil Tumilty found the net after a good move. Saul to their credit fought back and scoring see -sawed to half time with tumilty's goal the difference. Highlight of the first half a massive point from the boot of Bosco captain Ciaran Murtagh! HT Bosco 1.5 Saul 0.5
Lee Ruddy opened the scoring in the second half with a fine point and the Bosco men wasted a few opportunities to kill off the game. However they eventually found their stride and eased into a good lead before Saul somehow found the net from a 14 yard free with half the Bosco team on the line. However the home team recovered well and two excellent Gavin Moan points killed off any revival.
A decent performance but wouldn't be good enough to win a quarter final. Improvement needed but no doubt this young team have the ability and commitment to step up to the required level.
Final Score Bosco 1.12 Saul 1.07

St John Bosco U14s
Bosco 1-06 Ballyholland 4-17
Bosco boys played Ballyholland on their home turf on Monday last in the under 14 B semi-final. Unfortunately the boys didn't bring their 'A' game with them for this match. In truth both teams took a while to settle and the game was even enough in the first quarter. Rory Mc Parland opened the scoring for Bosco but scores were hard to come by in this period. Bally Holland soon levelled and took the lead with a soft goal but in fairness to Bosco they kept plugging away. Indeed but for some poor finishing things would have been tighter at half time. Bosco 0-4 Ballyholland 2-06.
The fast start needed in the second half didn't materialize and Ballyholland extended their lead with a further two goals. Bosco rallied with a goal of their own through Ryan Mc Aleavey but a tiring side couldn't kick on to close the gap. Rory Mc Parland continued to play captains role, working tirelessly to make things happen as did Ruairi Lavery in attack. Alas it just wasn't our night. Indeed but for goalkeeper Ronan Haughey the gap might have been greater. This young side however have had a very good year, without doubt the future is bright for this team. So ends the competitive season for this team. Training and challenge games will continue so I would urge all the boys to keep at their football.

Intermediate Championship Quarter Final....Naomh Eoin Bosco 0-16 Bredagh 2-7
The senior team advanced to to the semi final of the Intermediate championship with a 3 point victory against Bredagh on Saturday evening in Pairc Esler. This fixture was a repeat of last years game at the same stage in the competition and as with that game, the Bosco lads gave Bredagh a head start by allowing them to go 1-2 to no score into the lead after 10 minutes. However the boys kicked into gear and went into the half time break leading by a point. The second half started well for the lads and they went into a 5 point lead with 10 minutes remaining but a defensive mix up allowed Bredagh to score a second goal and bring the lead down to 2 points. Despite this set back the player's kept their heads and ran out deserved winners.
This wasn't a vintage performance but at this stage of the competition the result is all that matters. Keep an eye on out Facebook page for details of the semi final draw which is due to take place in the next few days.

The St John Bosco GAC social initiative is centre stage on Wed night at the Ulster celebration night in the Tyrone Centre of Excellence. Our winning 'seniors' team Felix Finnegan, Tom Tumilty, Peter Jackson and Mick Farrelly once again take to the road for a big away match. This group and their teammates over the last couple of years have clocked up many miles and big meetings including trips to the Aras (twice), Croke Park Conference, Eucharistic Conference, Armagh Gaol, St Peter's Belfast (St John Bosco relics), a series of social history nights as well as carrying out the Offertory Procession at our Club Mass every year. Not a bad track record for people who are supposed to be retired and taking things easy!

Thomas Davis Under 14’s win All County Division 3 Shield
Thomas Davis 3-08 Clady Emmetts 1-05
Thomas Davis Under 14 footballers rounded off a great season crowned Under 14 shield winners getting the better of Clady Emmetts (Clady & Dorsey) at Whitecross last Sunday morning in front of a sizeable crowd. Conditions weren’t ideal with a blustery wind blowing straight down the field but fair play to both teams who quickly adapted to the adverse conditions. Clady Emmetts elected to play with this strong breeze in the first half and registered the first score from play but for the next ten minutes, the Thomas Davis lads continually frustrated their opponents attack with some great defending with team captain Niall McShane to the fore allowing space up front for Adam Loughran to hit the equalising score and then Kyle Mooney nipped in for a goal to give our lads some breathing space. Clady replied with a free but our lads continually put them on the back foot with some great counterattacking play allowing us to go further ahead with a Conor Jennings point. Heading towards halftime a surging run from the Clady midfielder wasn’t checked and his shot deflected to the net however our lads regrouped to go ahead again through Kyle Mooney but on the stroke of halftime Clady landed a point to leave it level 1-03 each at halftime.
On the restart we immediately went ahead with a great score from Liam McKeown who was causing all sorts of problems for his marker with great movement off the ball. But as expected, Clady replied with a point to level it once again. Although we had a strong breeze at our backs, our lads stuck to their game plan, continually running at the opposition which began to bear fruit with a 2 goals in as minutes halfway through the half coming from Liam McKeown & Kyle Mooney. Clady tried hard to get the equalising scores but great defensive work from Niall McShane, Conor Jennings & Brendan McLoughlin continually stopped them in their tracks. Further scores from Conor Lenagh & Adam Loughran sealed it as a contest and a great cheer went up when the final whistle sounded as the Thomas Davis lads retained the Shield that they won last year with the celebrations continuing on back to the club. Well done to all the lads and team mentors, Adrian McCourt, Frank Harvey & Ronan O’Reilly. Thanks to Referee L.Malone had also a good game in the middle.
