Table Quiz
Newry Hockey Club will be holding a fundraising table quiz on Saturday night 19th October from 8pm to raise funds for the repiar of the flood lights. We invite everyone to come along with a team and enjoy the night with us.
Seconds hit for Six
Newry Olympic Seconds will be very disappointed to be on the wrong end of a six nil scoreline after travelling to Comber to face North Down 2nds on Saturday expecting a tight game and possibly a favourable result.
Traditionally slow-starters Newry went screaming out of the blocks on this one to put North under considerable pressure early on as they had the better of the opening ten minutes. Unfortunately the Newry rhythm was upset by an injury to David Hogg on colliding with the North ‘keeper and from that point forward Newry struggled with the expansive play of North and their ability to regularly freshen up the legs from the bench.
North scored three goals in each half, two from a short corner specialist and another from a penalty stroke. Newry contributed to their own demise with two of the goals coming from relatively simple errors at the back when cooler heads would have seen the danger away.
Newry struggled to operate as a unit with the overworked defence and midfield unable to offer the support required to the front men, who in turn struggled going forward with tired legs. That the last two North goals came in the last five minutes was a reflection on the relative energy levels with Newry running on empty as North continued to roll the subs.
It was not all bad for Newry and they will be encouraged by the creation, if not execution, of half a dozen short corners while McGuffin was unlucky to hit the post and Scott and Adams also had shots but couldn’t trouble the keeper. At the other end of the pitch Henry made a pair of fine reaction saves while Lawson was in the right spot to nick the ball from the North forward right on the line.
While six nil wasn’t a fair reflection on the game it shows that an off-day at this level is often heavily punished. Newry will look to cut out the errors and get back to the level of performance they are capable of next Saturday at home to Lisnagarvey.

Donaghadee Ladies 5-0 Newry Ladies
On Saturday, 12th October, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI travelled to Bangor Grammar School to play Donaghadee 1st XI. From the outset, luck was not on the Newry side having allowed two hours to travel but due to a major security alert on the M1, the team were forced to travel cross-country which meant hitting major traffic complications on the way. On arrival the Newry side had to start immediately and from the whistle, Donaghadee were on the attack, dominating possession on an extremely bumpy pitch and scoring 1 goal within the first ten minutes followed by a second just before half-time.. Newry had a couple of chances with forwards one on one with the goalie but were unable to finish.
At the beginning of the second half both teams came out strong with Newry being awarded two short corners in the first ten minutes of the second half but were unable to score due to the Donaghadee keeper doing some fine saves. Donaghadee battled back and sealed the match with three further goals making the final score Newry Olympics 0 Donaghadee 5

South Antrim 1's 3-6 Newry 1's
Saturday provided the toughest test and biggest challenge to Newry in their unbeaten start to the new season. Newry have now went 8 straight games unbeaten winning everyone. South Antrim flew out of the traps and were unplayable in the first 10 minutes. Newry could not get their passing game together and could not live with the pace and movement of the South' team. South' made their dominance pay off with two goals in this period which was nothing more than they deserved. Newry got back in the game when with their first meaningful attack of the game they scored when Andy Gilmer forced a mistake from the South Antrim keeper who knocked the ball into his own net.
Newry equalised early in the second half through a short corner with Colin McKnight firing home. Newry were now starting to play with a bit more fluidity, finding spaces and causing the South' defence a few more problems. Newry took the lead for the first time when a lightening counter attack found two Newry players on the South Antrim Keeper. Richard Nummy squared the ball to McKnight cutting the keeper as he slid the ball into the open net. Newry were pegged back when South Antrim scored their third with a stunning reverse stick finish into the top corner. Newry however were now starting to get into their stride, they wasted a few chances to regain the lead with sloppy finishing but John Taylor got the forth with a well placed drag flick from a short corner.
Newry now pressed on and when Kyle McCombe broke through the South' defence and at full stretch slipped the ball under the advancing keeper it looked like the game was beyond South Antrim. There was time for McKnight to complete his hat-trick when he connected sweetly with a half volley to make it 6 and insure Newry got all 3 points. Antrim continued to push right to the end and never gave up but Newry held out. Newry take on Portadown at home next Saturday in a top of the table clash.

Craobh Rua Camlocha Hurling Club are in the Ulster Club Championship Junior Hurling Final this Sunday at the Athletic Grounds with a kick off time of 2.30pm.
They will face the highly fancied Antrim champions Ciceam an Creagan (Creggan Kickhams)
The Armagh Champions have a diverse mix of experience and youth and this combination has seen them defeat Killeavy and Lurgan Sean Treacys to win the Armagh title and despite being underdogs in both games, progress to the Ulster Final by defeating Monaghan Harps and Shamrocks of Derry.
Team manager Patrick Brady who himself gave many years service to the Club as a player stated "The team is in an Ulster final by merit. They have worked hard and richly deserve their chance to create sporting history. This squad of hurlers owe us nothing, they have defied all expectations. We have put our heads down, stuck together, played as one and proudly take our place in an Ulster Final"
Chairperson of Craobh Rua Raymond Watters said that the sporting exploits of the hurling Club had lifted the community. "Everyone I have talked to is so proud of what our Hurling Club has achieved. It has created an air of pride and excitement, not only within our Club but throughout the Community. We were established in 1991 and our appearance in this Ulster Final is dedicated to all those over the years who worked tirelessly to ensure the continued development of Craobh Rua and the game of hurling" said Raymond who also passed on the congratulations of Craobh Rua to Shane O Neills Camloch who last weekend won the Ulster Junior Ladies GAA title.
Raymond concluded by stating “The Club have received good luck messages from many clubs and individual throughout the area. Tipperary’s all Star all Ireland goalkeeper Brendan Cummins and Clare All Ireland Team Manager Davy Fitzgerald being amongst those who have contacted us. Craobh Rua deeply appreciate all the support it has received”
Newry Ladies 5-0 South Antrim Ladies
Newry Ladies wanted to keep their solid start to the season going as they hosted South Antrim on Saturday. The result did not seem in doubt as Newry flew out of the traps creating many opportunities early on and it seemed only a mater of time before they took the lead. Youngster Aimee Magowan stepped up to the plate and knocked in Newry's first. Aimee doubled Newry's lead and her goal tally for the day just before half time.
Newry dominated the possession in the second half and again created plenty of chances. Debbie Barry, Caralyn Ferris and Lynne Ervine all scored to cap off dominate display from the home side and finish the game 5-0.

Newry 2's 0-5 Lisnagrvey 2's
A much-improved Newry Olympic Seconds were beaten 5 nil at home by a Lisnagarvey Seconds outfit that may well break the recent Banbridge dominance and win Junior One this season.
Things got off to a poor start for Newry who were forced to start with a kicking back and the home side were 2 nil down within five minutes before stand-in keeper David Henry had time to get settled between the sticks and make the first of several top-drawer saves. Spurred on by this Newry began to have more of the play and it was to their credit that despite considerable possession in the Newry half ‘Garvey were unable to add to the scoring for the remainder of the first half. The Belfast Road men showed some attacking intent of their own and applied some sustained pressure but lacked a cutting edge in and around the D.
The second half saw ‘Garvey make more of their possession as they spread the ball across the pitch and committed more men to attack. Newry continued to work hard but were pushed deeper making attacking on the counter more difficult, particularly as legs began to tire. Garvey added a third goal on 50 minutes but there was to be no repeat of the comeback from 3 nil down that we saw on the last home outing against Banbridge as Garvey added two further goals in the last 10 minutes. Newry will be disappointed that despite their hard work they didn’t work the Garvey keeper enough and didn’t force a single penalty corner. The usual willingness to graft was evident as was an improvement in composure on the ball, Newry will now look add a little guile, sharpness and cutting edge to their performances.
Newry team: N. McGuffin, A. Henning, J. Lawson, A. Baird, D Barlow, B. Scott, D. Andrews, W. Adams (c), A. Foster, D. Hogg, S. McCafferty Subs: D. Henry, J. Gregg, S. Blakely
Newry 1's 2-2 Portadown 2's
Newry hosted Portadown on Saturday in a top of the table clash that had all the makings of a great game. Newry had a number of players missing and knew they were going to be in for a tough game. With only a few minutes gone Jeremy Greer went off injured further increasing the injury woes for the home side. Newry had the better of the opening exchanges with John Taylor unlucky not to score from a short corner, however Portadown soon got into their stride and were really piling the pressure on Newry as the half wore on. They made their pressure pay off as they scored with a short corner to go in at half time with the lead.
Newry pressed forward in the second half and John Taylor got them back on level terms early on scoring through a short corner. Both teams were adventurous in attack creating a great game for the spectators even if the weather was trying its best to dampen the mood. Portadown got their noses in front again with a well worked short corner, now with their tails up they went looking the third and they nearly had it only for a Newry keeper Robin Hanlon to pull off a terrific stick save right out of the top drawer which drew applause from both sets of players. Portadown thought they had the game one with five minutes left only for their goal to be ruled out. With two minutes left John Taylor came to Newry's rescue scoring again with a short corner and salvage a draw against a very got Portadown team.

Just One year ago former GAA President, Paddy MacFlynn and author Alan Rodgers embarked on a project to complete the autobiography of the president who guided the GAA through one of the most difficult periods of the Troubles.
Now the completed book entitled ‘Leading Through the Troubles - A Life in the GAA - Paddy MacFlynn’ will have its official launch in the Canal Court in Newry at a special event this Thursday, October 24, at 7.30pm.
In the book, Paddy MacFlynn - who was GAA President from 1979 to 1982 - recounts in a forthright and honest manner the challenges of guiding the association through the army occupation of the Crossmaglen grounds, and dealing with events at the time in the H-Block - most notably the 1980/81 Hunger Strikes.
The publication of the book is made all the more poignant by the death of Mr MacFlynn three weeks ago at the age of 95.
His insights are an important addition to modern Irish history and how these events were high on his agenda as leader of an organisation whose members were affected in a multitude of ways.
‘Leading Through the Troubles’ will be launched by GAA President, Liam O'Neill, who will speak about the significance of Paddy MacFlynn’s presidency.
His contribution is also highlighted by the fact that, in an epilogue, former GAA Director General, Liam Mulvihill, said the GAA could not have remained united but for the presence of a ‘northern person of such stature as President.’
The author, Alan Rodgers, who is from Beragh in Co Tyrone said it was a privilege and honour to have worked with the former President on completing the book.
“I was constantly amazed at his recall of events over so many years and his interest in the GAA nationally,” said Alan.
"This was a project which Paddy was very anxious to see reach fruition. It is a fitting testament to his contribution to the development of gaelic games and culture
“He also played rugby and was instrumental in developing the structures which followed the introduction of live television coverage of football and hurling matches from the early 1960s and speaks with pride about his involvement with both the Tullylish club and the Down Co Board, of which he was President for many years.
“Paddy’s passing, even at the advanced age of 95, was greeted with sadness by all who knew him. But his contribution to the GAA is incomparable in the modern era.
“The manner in which he led the association during the difficult 1979-1982 period is just one lasting legacy from a lifetime of involvement and voluntary service.”
The event at the Canal Court gets underway at 7.30pm.
Further information can be obtained by contacting Alan Rodgers on 07793537486.
Golden Jubilee Dinner Dance
This was the night when everyone wanted to be part of the St John Bosco GAC family. A wonderful night starting off in the foyer of the hotel for a champagne reception when friendships were renewed, old friends caught up and then it was up the stairs to the Millers Suite which looked resplendent, decked out in the blue and yellow with balloons, flags and flowers.
The Jubilee organising committee did an excellent job in organising the event and no stone was left unturned in ensuring that the night went off without a hitch. Following a beautiful rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann, Simon Burke brought the guests on a whirlwind tour of the world as Boscomembers who couldn’t be there on the night sent in video messages. From Melbourne and Brisbane to Boston, New York, Charlotte, the Far East, France and more, it was great to see all the folks. The message was clear and somewhat poignant for whilst they all sent their best wishes they would all have loved to be in Newry for the celebrations and home with their family. Burren man John Francis McClorey (aka Frank Mitchel) was MC on the night and guest speaker Benny Tierney (from that famous 1 in a row Armagh team) kept the craic flowing on the night.
All of the guests including Michael Ruane the Mayor of Newry & Mourne, Seamus Walsh the Chairman of the Down County Board and many others remarked that it was a special evening, an honour to be present and compared it to a large family gathering where all were at home. That’s what is so special about the St John Bosco GAC, we are one large family and Friday night was the perfect occasion when all could gather in person or in spirit, bound together by a love of the GAA, a love of Newry and most of all a passion for St John Bosco GAC. This passion was captured by
Canon Brown ADM in a very simple but powerful moment that touched all when before he said prayers before dinner he prayed for all members who couldn’t be present on the night and for all those family members who had passed away. A sentiment that epitomises Cumann Naomh Eoin Bosco.
The night went all too quickly and before you knew it the band were playing the last song, the dance floor had never emptied all night and it was time for the resident’s bar or home (depending on who was driving or in charge!) Many of the areas of Newry were well represented in St John Bosco over the years – Monaghan Row by the famous Tumilty family and more, the Meadow by the Jackson’s, Rooney’s, Shield’s and the McGrath’s, Daisy Hill Gardens by the Rock’s and Brady’s. Even the 13 houses (now 15 post Celtic Tiger boom) of Aileen Terrace provided many players for the yellow and blue. The ‘Terrace’ was well represented on the big night with Denis
McGivern (U16 1979) – he of 6 tuxedos, Patrick McParland (now a Clonduff man, but by postcode only), Paul McCormack (PRO lately returned to the club with Pól Óg in the U10’s when his 3 girls moved on from Irish dancing), Terry O’Neill (Transferred to Downpatrick by marriage), Leontia O’Neill (now Mrs Rossiter and with her two boys playing for the Bosco) and several more of the O’Neill clan (#1 Aileen Terrace).
Summing up – A wonderful night, solid company and treasured memories!

Lisnagarvey 3's 2-1 Newry 2's
Newry travelled to Lisnagarvey 3's on Saturday hoping to get back into winning ways again, Before the game there was a minutes silence held for past club president Sam McCullough which was impeccably held. Newry struggled to get the ball moving early on with Garvey doing damage with long balls to the wings. The home side took the lead midway through the first half when a mixup in the Newry defence let the 'Garvey striker in on goal and he duely slotted home. Newry got back on level terms when David England fired home a cracking short corner but Newry's joy was short lived as 'Garvey scored straight away with a short corner of their own. Newry played a lot better in the second half and were creating a lot more chances however a number of last ditch tackles kept them at bay. Andrew Gilmer came close to get Newry back on level terms only to see his audacious lob attempt just go over the bar. Newry were unlucky not to get a second when a goal was dissallowed with the umpires unable to agree if the last touch were inside or outside the circle. Newry continued to press but could not find the equaliser and went down 2-1.
