Thomas Davis Corrinshego v Whitecross
On Saturday the young footballers from Corrinshego took on their counterparts from Whitecross in a great game of football. From the start Danny Shields and Adam Travers dominated midfield with Danny scoring 2-6 and Adam adding 2-5. C. Mallon performed well in goals and Calum Bradley scored 0-2 in his first game of the year after braking his arm. Ciaran Higgins was safe in the full- back line and gets better with each game and also added 0-2 to the Corrinshego total. Martin McKinley with his first ever start in a maroon jersey never gave up, while Shea Mallon ran his heart our when he was brought into the forwards. Liam O’Brien pulled off a good block when a Whitecross goal looked certain. Corrinshego would like to thank Whitecross for a very sporting game.
Corrinshego : Caoimhe Mallon, Ciaran Higgins, Martin McKinley, Calum Bradley, Adam Travers , Danny Shields, Liam O’Brien, Shea Mallon and Katie O’Brien.

Tomás Dáibhis 5-12 Éire Óg 0-08
Thomas Davis Under 16’s got back to winning ways in the first round of the All County Shield with a comprehensive win over North Armagh rivals Éire Óg at St.Pauls school field last Thursday night. Both sides started quite evenly with good attacking moves with excellent build-ups from their respective half back lines and after 10 minutes both sides were evenly matched with 0-03 each on the scoreboard but with Lee Courtney positioned at the edge of the small square this tactic began to bear fruit with a well taken goal. Éire Óg were finding it difficult at this stage to handle the movement of our forwards and soon the scores began to rack up with majors from Matthew Loughran, Dean Faloon & Caolan Marron. Further points from Declan Loye, Caolan Marron & Lee Courtney allowed us a generous lead of 5-06 to 0-06 at halftime.
The expectant Éire Óg comeback never materialised in the second half primarily as our defensive unit was on top in all sectors. Goalkeeper Ronan McMahon was excellent with some fine stops and good awareness sweeping in behind his fullback. Breandáin McCorry & Shane Keenan never put a foot wrong all night and half backs Conor Jennings, Aaron Cinnamond & Dean Faloon supported the play at every opportunity. A good night for Thomas Davis but there is no doubt there will be harder challenges to come.
Training continues every Sunday Morning at 10.45am at the Club Grounds. New members welcome. Contact Anthony Havern 07805853032

Mullaghbawn 1-03 Oliver Plunketts 6-10
On a glorious Monday evening the Minors travelled away to play Mullaghbawn in the second fixture in the All County League. Mullaghbawn coming down from Div 1 would be a test for the lads. With the ref not turning up it was with thanks to a local ref for coming to officiate the game at short notice. The home side from the throw in put over the first point and the game ebbed and flowed for the next ten minutes with the boys popping over three points from Phelim Finnegan and Lee Courtney. In a hard hitting game with 15 mins on the clock this minor team played their best football this season which started from the ball hitting the back of the net from Sean Thompson, from this the boys gave Mullaghbawn a torrid time with men overlapping runs all around the pitch, the home side were dealt further blows with goals coming from Jordan King, C. Flanagan, Phelim Finnegan, Conor Loye and Capt Mark McAteer and a great individual point from wing half Ryan Magill. The full backs of Jamie Fields, Deaglan Jennings and Micheal McGory time and again just beat their men to the ball to start the attacks off resulting in the half-time score 0-2 6-8. With a chance to put subs on a few changes were made, knowing Mullaghbawn would come out for the second half with their ears ringing from the mentors half time team-talk, it was the home side who started the quicker with the first point of the second half. Mullaghbawn were getting more of the ball and it was only two great saves from keeper David Hankin that kept a comfortable scoreline between the sides. The boys showed great maturity in not forcing the game and for long periods kept procession of the ball making the home side work constantly. Great play from Niall Canning who worked tirelessly in defence and the full forward line of Charlie Magill, C Flanagan and Decky Loye who were out in front of their men all night. A super result at the end of game winning 1-3 6-10. Man of the match performance from Phelim Finnegan with some terrific scores and great work ethic. Next game at home to Granemore throw in 7.30pm 1st July.

For most of us Latzio are a top Italian football club who play at the highest level in European soccer. But there's a small province of Latzio called Rieti and that's the destination for 17 year old Newry girl Aislinn Crossey and her coach Francis Kookie O Hagan as they head off to the European Junior Athletics Championships on Thursday week the 18th of July where Aislinn will run for Ireland in the 800m Junior Ladies event writes Brendan Monaghan.
The Likable Windmill Road girl received the good news via email on Monday from the National Selectors at the AAI in Dublin. To the Athletics fraternity across the north and south of Ireland the news will come as no surprise as the young Sacred Heart student has a running CV that really is worth a visit on google or any of the National Athletics websites.
Numerous NI schools titles and individual race credits are backed up with National medals in both the 400 and 800m disciplines with the most recent honour coming on Sunday last when Crossey landed the Irish National Junior 800m title in a time of 2:11.14 at Tullamore County Offaly, no mean feat indeed considering the Newry student at 17 years can continue to run at Junior level for at least another 2 seasons. Personal bests at 400m (56.07) rank Aislinn 13th in the UK and 1st in NI, at 600m (1:31.29) she is ranked 1st in the UK and NI and in the 800m (2:06.43) the Newry AC athlete is classed at 5th in the UK and no.1 in NI, Impressive stuff indeed.
Aislinn took up running almost 5 years ago and soon fell under the wily eye of top coach O Hagan who plied his trade in triathlon, fell running and cycling and together with nutrition guru Barry Monaghan and strength and conditioning expert Brendan Murphy combined with important imput from Rodney Hanna the 4 men have helped to produce a real prospect from the Newry area.
It all could have been so different had Aislinn embarked on her original plan to follow a path into top class irish dancing where she competed in many feis competitions for the Burren based Murtagh School Of Dancing. But after a number of years jigs, reels and solo’s Crossey became somewhat disillusioned with the dancing scene and decided to throw her hat into the athletics ring.
Coach O Hagan reckons 5” 3’ Crossey is the real deal and states that his protégé "always runs with a smile on her face" and he feels that her attitude and commitment to diet, nutrition, training and competition is of the highest order, a rare attribute in someone so young. The Rostrevor based coached tells stories of the wet winter nights he has sat in the steeplechase pit of the St Colmans complex watching Aislinn going through her training routine on the deserted track cutting a lonely figure set against dark black skies and driving rain in her sacrifice to reach the top.
Sadly Aislinn’s progress is not helped by a total lack of funding and as she improves her times coach O Hagan has to find finances to take the Newry athlete across the water to England for better quality races and this situation will not change in the near future. Aislinn’s parents Art and Marian have backed their daughter from the start and if luck combined with a steely determination to succeed at the highest level and the continued imput from her coaching team could one day see the affable Newry girl reach the dizzy heights of top class athletics.
St John Bosco U12 Girls
BOSCO v BURREN
The u12 girls were severely depleted on Wednesday night due to 8 players being on holidays including the three regular full backs and as a result a number of positional changes were required. On a positive note the return of Chloe Quinn to the forward line after injury proved timely as she contributed 2: 04.
Bosco started the stronger and the combined work of Niamh Burns and Traesa McKinley kept the Burren forwards at bay. Chloe scored her 1st goal and added 2 point before Burren registered their 1st point. They quickly added a goal and a pointed free to level matters but Bosco finished the half well with 2 points from Nicola Downey and a brilliant individual goal from Chloe Quinn.
This comfortable five point cushion soon evaporated as Burren dominated the early part of the 2nd half with a goal and a point without reply to leave a single point separating the sides. Chloe Quinn chipped over a point to steady things and when Aimee Murtagh fired in a goal the game looked safe for Bosco. Back came Burren however and again a well worked team goal reduced the gap to 2 points. In the final five minutes Burren pushed for the goal they needed but an excellent block by Traesa McKinley and a goal mouth clearance from Nicole Cunningham proved decisive to the result.
FINAL SCORE Bosco 3:07 Burren 3:05

On the same weekend that Down were sucker punched in Derry, a Scotsman won Wimbledon and Dan Martin became the first Irishman since his uncle Stephen Roche to win a stage of the Tour De France, local postman Barry Convery blasted his way around the south Down coastline and majestic Mourne mountains to become the fourth winner of the Olympic distance Top Of The Mourne Triathlon writes Brendan Monaghan.
Convery is a man in form after his recent win in the Causeway Coast Triathlon and showed he meant business as he ploughed his way through all 3 disciplines on one of the most spectacular courses in Ireland in a combined time of 2.18.36. First lady home in a time of 2.41.55 was Scottish girl Christina MacKenzie who is a member of the Portmarnock club in Dublin.
Team winners were the Well Fit Café team of Conor Fabb first man out of Carlingford lough(20.41) Peter McConville who punctured and had to complete the last kilometre of the bike ride on foot (1.15.34) and Dermot Mathers posting a fantastic time of (36.53) for ta 10k run around the rolling hills of Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor.
Race organisers Newry Triathlon Club and Event Directors Peter Quinn and Catherine Murphy are beginning to establish yet another top class Triathlon event for the Newry and Mourne area with a real family atmosphere in evidence on a very hot day at the Kilbroney Park venue.
Although not yet on a par with the clubs flagship event in Camlough surely with the dedication and commitment the NTC put into organising and promotion of their events and the breathtaking course which takes in Carlingford Lough, the Mountains of Mourne and the hugely popular Kilbroney Park it’s only a matter of time that The Top Of The Mourne Triathlon will be talked about all over the Island of Ireland and beyond.

This year’s event had well over 100 competitors and was well organised throughout with numerous safety boats in the water and marshals covering the south Down roads both on foot and motorbike with the transition and finish area in Kilbroney is the perfect setting for the large crowds who are starting to grow as the years go by, credit indeed to the Newry Triathlon Club, their members and friends.
East Coast Adventure will be running a free Mountain Bike Safety and Awareness day on the 17th of July at Kilbroney.
With the recent development of mountain bike trails in Northern Ireland there has been a significant increase of people taking up the sport. Mounting Biking is especially attractive to young people providing them with a fantastic opportunity to get outdoors away from busy roads and enjoy the fantastic natural and manmade resources that are free for us to use at the Rostrevor Mountain Bike Trails.
For inexperienced riders or newcomers to the sport it can be daunting trying to decide what is the best equipment to use and if the old bike that’s been at the back of the garage for the past 10 year is fit for purpose. East Coast Adventure the new official Mountain Bike provider in Rostrevor Trails are constantly being presented with bikes that are not fit for trail use, faulty or set up entirely wrong. This can turn what should be an enjoyable experience in the great outdoors into wasted day walking a broken bike back to the car or worse, a trip to A&E.
East Coast Adventure is here to help! In a bid to promote good practice on the trails they will be running a free Mountain Bike safety and awareness day on the 17th July from 2pm – 9pm. There will be advice on where to ride, what to buy, setting your bike up, what to carry and what to do if it goes wrong. You can also bring along your bike and get advice on whether or not it’s suitable and safe or even just set up correctly.
Ian Cumming: director of East Coast Adventure says:" we are constantly being presented with bikes not fit for purpose. I’m appealing to everyone especially parents who have kids interested in getting into the sport to come along to the safety day. We are fully committed to making Mountain biking a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone young and old.
Mayor of Newry & Mourne District Council, Councilor Michael Ruane said "On behalf of Newry & Mourne District Council we are particularly pleased to support the promotion of this very important initiative being organised by East Coast Adventure, recently appointed by the Council to provide visitor services at the trail head. This is a great opportunity to get some important advice and information and we encourage as many people as possible to avail of this. In addition MountainBikeNI.com will be delivering an on line education message, so if you are not able to attend this event, I would encourage you to visit www.mountainbikeni.com or follow them on Facebook for the latest information to assist with your safety on the trails.
To maximise your experience and safety, the Council would remind everyone using the trails to take the time to read the signs and information available and purchase an official trail card at £2 which can be used on all your return visits to the Rostrevor Mountain Bike Trails".

Oliver Plunketts 4-11 Granemore 4-07 The minors had a home game this week with the visitors being Granemore. Perfect conditions for a match it was the boys who started the quicker with some super football being played leaving the boys to race into an early lead, a goal coming from Jordan King and a brace of points from Phelim Finnegan and Decky Loye.
With the game being 13 aside space was plentiful for both sides and the boys kicked on again with another two goals from Decky Loye and Conor Loye. The defence were giving Granemore no respite with halfbacks Lee Courtney and Niall Canning linking with the half forwards Ryan McSherry and Jordan King causing Granemore all sorts of problems, full backs Deaglen Jennings,Jamie Fields and the ever improving Micheal McGory keeping their men to just two points over the 30mins.
At halftime the boys had built up a lead of 3-8 0-2.On the restart it was the away side who from the throw in worked the ball forward resulting in the ball ending up in the back of the net. This give Granemore the start to the second half they wanted and they were fighting for every ball now and registered the next four points and had all the momentum. Granemore had changed their tactics by playing a long high ball into the square and once again after a super save by goalkeeper David Hankin, the full forward reacted quicker toe poking the ball into the net. The boys were now struggling to gain control as Granemore to their credit kept launching the ball route one. A super individual goal by Jordan King got the boys ontop again thus resulting in them starting to win their individual battles after a shaky 15 min period.
At the final whistle the boys registered their third win in a row in the All County 4-11 4-7 but improvement in the second half performances need to be the goal for this young set of players. Training days may vary.

Newry City AFC 0-2 Cliftonville FC
Newry City AFC continued their preparations for the new season with what proved to be an entertaining and keenly contested challenge game against Cliftonville FC at the Showgrounds on Thursday night. The visitors, fresh from a Champions League qualifier against Glasgow Celtic the previous evening, paid Newry the respect of fielding a team which contained six players who played first team football in their Premiership winning team of last season.
For the new season The Showgrounds is in sparkling condition with the playing surface perfect for free flowing football which suited both teams. The away team soon made use of the conditions with neat interplay which needed the timely intervention of Newrys centre half Conor McCaul who snuffed out the threat. Indeed this was an early glimpse of what was to come as both McCaul and his partner Joel Annett were the top performers of the evening for Newry.
The home team were also posing a threat at the other end and soon manufactured a gilt edged chance for the first goal for the new club. Peter Thompson, a strong running attacker beat two defenders in his foray from the half way line and while it looked much like he had run into a cul de sac he was able to pull the ball back to Conor McCaul who’s driven cross struck a defenders hand for a clear penalty. Unfortunately Chris McMahon who has had an excellent preseason saw his penalty strike the outside of the post and go wide.
Undaunted, Newry continued to attack and had another good chance when a long cross from full back John Smyth was headed back into the box by the industrious Jimmy Walker to Gareth Hughes who blasted narrowly over.
Cliftonville took the lead in the 37th minute when a cross from the right wing was only half cleared to Darmuid O’Carroll who took the ball into the box and rounded Morley-Hillen in the home nets to put Cliftonville 1-0 up. Newry bounced back and on the stroke of half time a strong run from Shane Lundy set up John Smyth who’s left wing cross come shot deceived Barnett in the Cliftonville net who was relieved to see the ball slip over the cross bar.

Whilst the second half was evenly contested Newry perhaps had the clearer openings and continued to be solid at the back with the Louth County GAA keeper, Shane McCoy now between the sticks. Soon after the restart a long through ball from Annett gave Thompson a one on one against Barnett who deflected the shot for a corner.
This was soon followed by a chance for Walker created by the tough tackling Lundy. Alas Walker was crowded out inside the box by the Cliftonville defence. And so the game flattened out except for a late breakaway goal from John Donnelly for Cliftonville to make the final score 2-0.
This was a very pleasing performance for the Newry management team who can take lot’s of positives from the game. In a good all round performance many players had solid games. However against Premier League opposition defensively Newry looked largely solid due to an excellent display by Conor McCaul. Even more heartening was that NCAFC were able to donate the proceeds of the night, some £660 to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund. The evening could also not have been possible without the support of Cliftonville FC to whom all at Newry are very grateful.
Newry City Team: Nathan Morley-Hillen, Niall Crilly, John Smyth, Conor McCaul, Joel Annett, Chris McMahon, David O'Connor, Gareth Hughes, Peter Thompson, Jimmy Walker, Shane Lundy. Subs: Shane McCoy, Graham Edgar, Lonnie Larkin, Chris Smyth, Gary McVicar, Connor Lenaghan, Mark Lowry.
Cliftonville squad: Craig Barnet, Tomas Cosgrove, Eamon Seydak, Dermot McVeigh, Joe McNeill, Ciaran Donaghy, Conall McCandless, Chris Curran, Diarmuid O'Carroll, Johnny McMurray, Jody Lynch. Subs: Anthony O'Hanlon , Ryan McCloskey, John Donnelly.

St John Bosco U12 Girls
U12 Girls display their talent at Ulster Blitz
The under 12 girls travelled to the excellent new Tyrone GAA facilities in Garvaghey near Ballygawley for the annual Ulster u12 blitz on Saturday and showed their undoubted talent with some excellent victories. This event is all about giving the girls an opportunity to play against teams from across Ulster, and although there is no trophy involved all the matches was very competitive.
The girls had great victories against Beragh Red Knights and Moy Tir Na nÓg (Tyrone), Monaghan Harps and Scotstown (Monaghan) and St Enda’s (Antrim).
The girls finished the day with a challenge match against Clan na Gael (Armagh) who are managed by Armagh All Ireland winner Diarmuid Marsden. The girls put in a great performance to beat the Armagh team by 4 points and round off an excellent day out.
Clan na Gael have now agreed to attend the Bosco Blitz tournament in August

St John Bosco U10s
The U10s are getting plenty of game time and are averaging 2 games a week now on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evening.
Last Wednesday the Gaels and Ógs travelled out to John Martin Park in Glenn and both teams played great football in a great family atmosphere, a wonderful spectacle of underage football. Best for the Ógs were Padraig Caldwell in nets, Ronan Cinnamond in defence and Pól Óg McCormack in midfield. The Ógs were well served by Aaron Downey and Dessie McKevitt in attack Padraig Hurley in defence and Matthew Rice in midfield.
On Sunday 21st the teams travelled to St Moninna Park in Killeavy to meet two strong Killeavy teams comprised mainly of P6’s. The opposition proved very strong for both the Gaels and Ógs but both sets of players stuck to their tasks and displayed some excellent football against all the odds. A man of the match display from Ronan Cinnamond for the Gaels and Caomhan McDavitt for the Ógs were two great highlights of the day.
Next up for the U10s is a home game in St Patrick’s on Wednesday nights against Glenn and an away fixture nest Sunday against Drumgath.
