Local Runner Eamon Murphy has never been afraid of challenges having completed 9 marathons already including Newry, Dublin and London to name a few.
Being already involved in charitable work at a local level he has decided to raise funds for the local Special Olympics movement by running the Great Wall of China Marathon next year, a challenge involving heat and humidity not to mention the 5,510 steps to climb over the 26.2mile distance on the Wall!
Eamon started the now annual PIPS Newry & Mourne 10k run/5k walk event and it continues to grow into a special event to local forward to annually.
Commenting on his latest challenge Eamon said "To combine my love of running and my interest in volunteering with local charities, I decided on my next challenge. As a 'fun' runner I am lucky to have opportunities to travel to an event practically every weekend of the year with friends, enjoy a run and collect a nice commemorative medal at the end."

"I thought it should be possible to give something to Special Olympics athletes, who perhaps don't have the same amount of opportunities as myself and my friends. I explored the local scene and was introduced to great people like Esther King (coach) and Marian Crossey (Special Olympics Newry City), and other helpers and parents. These highly dedicated (volunteer) coaches and helpers, give immense amounts of time, effort and commitment to the Special Olympic movement locally, and throughout the year."
Having researched quite a few Marathons, Eamon chose the Great Wall of China Marathon "Firstly because it is an extreme challenge for me ( but also because it takes place next May. This means if I am successful I will be able to return home in time to see the Ulster & Newry Special Olympians leave for Limerick and the all-Ireland games in June 2014."
Fundraising events have already begun for the challenge which takes place on the 17th of May 2014. If you'd like to follow his challenge you can check it out on www.facebook.com/GreatWallMarathonForSpecialOlympicsIreland or donate online by visiting www.specialolympics.ie/eamonmurphy

The Third Annual Michael O Hare Charity Cycle took place on Sunday 22nd September starting and finishing at Newry Fire Station. Over 250 cyclists of varying abilities congregated at the firehouse on Edward Street to a fantastic welcome from the hosts and organisers Newry Fire Service.
Tea, coffee and buns were on offer for the riders before they tackled a choice of two routes one at fifty miles and another covering some twenty five miles.
The shorter route took in a loop including Jerretspass Poyntzpass and Scarva and back to Newry with the longer cycle heading for Poyntzpass, Tandragee, Markethill, Keady, Newtownhamilton and home to Newry for a hot shower and even more refreshments back at the firehouse.
Deirdre Shields and her crew served up the tea and coffee and indeed Deirdre's beloved charity Newry Gateway Club benefitted from the proceeds of the event along with the St Vincent De Paul.
All in all it was yet another fine event run by the Newry Firehouse Wheelers who have now raised many thousands of pounds for local charities and as the years pass on their Bike For Mike Cycle seems to be going from strength to strength.

MATCH REPORT
Tomás Dáibhis 6-10 Tullach Sháráin 2-08
Thomas Davis Under 16’s rounded off a great season with a hard fought win over north Armagh side Tullysaran in the Final of the All County Shield last Sunday at Newtownhamilton to add to the All County League title they won last week. Tullysaran started the brightest in this game and really got the better of the midfield exchanges to pressurise our defence from early on to go in to 0-02 to no score lead with 10 minutes played. We got our first score on the board through corner forward Declan Loye to calm the initial nerves and from this point we settled into our game getting quick early ball to the full forward line were Jordan Mackey hit the equalising point. Both sides were really going for at it at this stage as they both tried to get the upper hand and once again Tullysaran edged ahead with another point. At midfield Lee Courtney & Keyonis Crozier were winning good primary possession and driving forward at every opportunity which was causing havoc as our support play opened up the Tullysaran defence to allow Lee Courtney to register a well taken goal. A point a piece from Declan Loye & Jonny Tumilty gave us some breathing space but immediately Tullysaran responded with a goal to reduce the margin to one on 20 minutes but the next 10 minutes proved to be the winning of the game for us as we registered 3-02 all coming from play to leave us in command 4-06 to 1-03 at halftime.
On the restart we knew we still had work to do as Tullysaran now had the wind advantage and began chipping into our lead with 4 points reeled off without reply from both frees and play. A Declan Loye point held back the tide as Tullysaran kept applying the pressure and on the 15 minute mark they got in for a goal leaving only 5 points between the teams. Once again our lads rose to the occasion to lift the siege and register a point from Caolan Marron. Our defence of Shane Keenan, Aaron Cinnamond, Dean Faloon & Breandáin McCorry were magnificent over the final period as they were continually out in front of their men, creating turnovers as we counterattacked to hit 2 late goals from Declan Loye & Keyonis Crozier to seal the contest and ensure the silverware was heading back to Newry. Team Captain Breandáin McCorry accepted the All County Shield on behalf of the team from Armagh County Board Representative Peter Murphy & then Vice Captain Declan Loye then when forward to accept the All County League Cup. Double celebration for this young team who with only a panel of 15 players proved once again with the correct attitude and desire anything is possible. Tomás Dáibhis Abú

Down GAA County Board have expressed their deep sadness on the death of their "esteemed and much loved" Uachtarán Paddy Mac Flynn.
Seamus Walsh Chairman of Down GAA in paying tribute stated that ‘Paddy was an iconic figure in the world of GAA, a man who had held the top position in our organisation yet was always happiest when meeting and greeting people of all ages at Club and County matches. He was a wise Counsellor to all inside and outside of meetings and he will be greatly missed by all in Down GAA.'
Paddy had just completed his biography entitled 'Leading through the Troubles - A Life in the GAA'
Running to 250 pages, the autobiography tells an eventful story of the 95 years of his colourful, action-packed life, including his long association as Down Treasurer and as President and his involvement with Tullylish, of which he was also currently President.
The Board have released the statement below.
Paddy was a tremendous servant to the GAA. From his earliest days as a founding member of O'Donovan Rossa GAA Club in Magherafelt, to his last attendance at a meeting of Coiste Banisti in Down on the 29th April this year.
Indeed at that meeting which had been called to discuss the proposed Football review within Down, Paddy informed the members that ‘this was a massive job and the County would have to deliver on this task'.
Profound words indeed from a man who always delivered on the tasks at hand. A man who first came to Down as an administrator back in 1949 and served on East and South Down Boards, was Treasurer of the County Committee from 1955 to 1973 and Central Council and Ulster Council Delegate for many years.
It was indeed a very proud moment when Paddy was elected Uachtarán of Cumann Luthchleas Gael in 1979. His leadership in that period ensured that the GAA continued to grow and develop as the biggest amateur sporting organisation in this country and beyond.
We in Down have been privileged to have had a leader like Paddy MacFlynn in our midst, to have worked with him and learned from him has been a wonderful education. We are the richer for having had his presence amongst us.
Ar Dheis De go Raibh a Anam
This weekend ten years ago history was made in Croke Park when two Ulster teams met in the All Ireland Senior Football Championship Final for the first time ever.
Old rivals Tyrone took on Armagh on Sunday the 28th of September 2003 in front of a crowd of nearly 80.000.
This was enabled by the introduction of the qualifying or Back Door system introduced in 2001 and it happened at a time when Ulster sides were the dominant football force for a brief spell in GAA history.
It also went down in history (sadly from Armagh's point of view) as the first All Ireland Senior Football Championship win ever for Tyrone!
Tyrone had won the Ulster Football Final with a victory over Down while Armagh took the Back Door route after losing out to Monaghan in the Ulster preliminary round.
It wasn't to be Armagh's game with Diarmuid Marsden being sent off in the second half. This coupled with Steven McDonnell's last ditch goal attempt in the dying minutes of the second half which was blocked by Conor Gormley!
It just wasn't to be and Tyrone emerged victorious winning by 0:12 to Armagh's 0:9.
Looking back is always tinged with sadness and in this case not because of the result but some things much more important. Tyrone All Star player Cormac McAnallen in number 3 died suddenly just six months later, a week after he captained Tyrone to victory in the Dr McKenna Cup and Michella McAreavey, daughter of Tyrone Manager Mickey Harte, always present by her fathers side who was murdered nearly three years ago on her honeymoon in Maritius.

St John Bosco U10s
St John Bosco vs St Killian’s
The U10s travelled to Whitecross on Sunday morning to play St Killian’s.
An away game for the U10’s on the long grass of South Armagh both clubs fielded two teams, Gaels and Ógs each. The St Killian’s players played fast and challenged hard and put the games up to the Bosco lads. With conditions heavy underfoot and fast football being played this was an energy sapping game of football for the U10 footballers which provided a real test of skill, awareness and ability.
Joe Hanna and Matthew Rice controlled midfield in the Ógs game with Josh Hanna having an excellent game between the posts. Aaron Downey was in the wars shipping some heavy tackles but kept coming back and scored some fine points.
Best for the Gaels team were Rory McAleavy in nets, Cormac Flannigan in defence, Pól Óg McCormack and James Boyle at centre of the park and Padraig Caldwell and Ciaran McAlinden in the forward line.

Midweek game - Linden Cup: Newry 1’s 9-0 Cliftonville 1’s
R. Hanlon, J. Greer, N. McKnight, N. Liggett, C. Henning, D. England, J. Taylor, C. McKnight, K. McCombe, R. Irwin, A. Gilmore, B. Scott
Newry knew a win in this game would guarantee them a place in the semi-final of the Linden Cup. Right from the off the home side went all out in attack, for 15 minutes they were frustrated by the Cliftonville defence but eventually their pressure paid off with David England getting the first of the game.
This eased Newry’s nerves and they started to play freer flowing hockey putting into practice what they have been doing in training in recent weeks. Two well worked short corner routines gave Newry their second and third goals with John Taylor and Colin McKnight scoring. There was time for another goal before the halftime whistle and Robert Irwin was in the right place for an easy tap in to make it four.
Newry pushed forward again in the second half with their defence having very little to do but set the next attacking going. Colin McKnight got the fifth of the game after a lovely passing exchange with Kyle McCombe left him one on one with the keeper and he slotted home. If the fifth was a fine sweeping move the sixth was a scrappy rather lucky goal, Kyle McCombe claimed his second when a shot was saved by the Cliftonville keeper and the Newry forward managed to bundle the ball and keeper over the line.
There was yet more luck to come for Newry when John Taylor miss-hit a short corner from close range wrong footing the keeper with the ball barely trickling over the line. Robert Irwin got his name on the score sheet again with another tap in to get his brace. The rout was completed with David England firing in the ninth and final goal of the game to give Newry a well-deserved win.
Weekend Games - Newry 1's 5-1 Antrim 1's
R. Hanlon, J. Greer, N. Liggett, N. McKnight, C. Henning, C. McKnight, J. Taylor, D. England, A. Gilmer, R. Irwin, K. McCombe, R. Nummy, N. Davenport
Newry hosted Antrim on Saturday in their first home league game of the campaign. Antrim had been relegated from the Premier league last season so this was going to be a tough test and challenge Newry's fine start to the season. Newry were full of confidence having won their previous four games and it told early on with the home side having most of the position on this hot day. It didn’t take too long before Newry went ahead through John Taylor when he fired home from a short corner. Within a matter of minutes it was two, with Robert Irwin scrambling the ball over the line after it had ricocheted up in the air and he managed to get to the ball before the keeper.
Midway through the second half Newry made it three when Taylor intercepted the ball in midfield at laid it out to Greer on the right who broke through the Antrim defence and squared the ball back to Irwin who got his second goal of the game. The Newry striker has four in two games and is now turning his hard work into goals. Just before the half Antrim nicked a goal from a short corner to put slight pressure on the home side. However Newry responded by knocking in the forth before half time with David England firing a rocket into the top right hand corner from a short corner.
The second half was a lot less fluid than the first with Antrim content to break down play in their attempt to stop leaking goals. However Taylor got Newry's fifth with a short corner straight from the training ground, the third goal of the day to come from a short corner which is unusual for Newry as they are normally wasteful from their set pieces. Newry next match is against Bangor at home on Tuesday evening in their final game of the Linden Cup group stage.
Newry Ladies 3-1 Cooke Ladies
Team: Carol Waddell, Diane McMinn, Alison Gamble, Claire Gamble, Taja McIlroy, Laura Girvan, Rebecca Ross, Caralyn Ferris, Debbie Barry, Laverne Inns, Aimee Magowan, Judith Cochrane, Nichola Shields, Lynne Ervine, Naomi Burns and Chrissie McCauley. Umpires Tara McShane and Ivan Moffett. Coach Norman Toombs.
The ladies 1stXI played host to Cooke Ladies on Saturday. Newry started brightly by going on the offensive and created two very probable chances to forge ahead within the first five minutes. It would be Debbie Barry who eventually open the scoreline in Newrys favour. They would score again through the efforts of Laverne Inns. Cooke would reply with a goal of their own just before half time when they converted from a short corner.
It was a hot day and Newry could take advantage of a full subs bench. Whilst Cooke had just the bare eleven. They would be reduced to ten through an injured player having to take leave of the pitch. Newry would go on to control the game and finished the match off when Lynne Ervine scored making it 3-1 which was the final score. Newrys man of the match this week was Taja McIlroy in defence who had a terrific game.
Cookstown 2's 5-2 Newry 2's
S. Revels, D. Barlow, A. Baird, B. Scott, A.Henning, S. McCafferty, A. Foster, W. Adams, J. Niblock, D. Hogg, S. Blakley.
Newry Seconds travelled to County Tyrone on Saturday to play the much fancied Cookstown seconds. Newry went to Cookstown with a very depleted side in fact only eleven players made the journey. The home side came out of the blocks quickly and took the lead 10 minutes in with a strong shot from the right hand side of the circle. Newry soaked up a lot of Cookstown pressure however they conceded another goal on 24 minutes again a well hit strike from the top of the circle. The Newry defence of Barlow, Baird, Scott and Henning were doing everything they could to keep the Cookstown forwards at bay.
Cookstown's third and forth goals were from penalty corners that stand in keeper Stuart Revels could do nothing about. Newry Captain Ben Scott decided to restructure things at half time bringing Simon McCafferty back into midfield to inject some pace into the game and pushing the evergreen Davy Hogg upfront. This proved to be an inspired decision as the latter got on the scoreboard for Newry early in the second half. Newry were having their best spell in the game and were really putting the Cookstown team under pressure, however a breakaway goal put the scoreline beyond any doubt in the 55 minute. Newry had chances to get back into the game with Adam Foster missing a glorious opportunity with the goal at his mercy. Newry continued to work hard and again it was Davy Hogg who grabbed Newry's second with a rebound from a penalty corner after some good play in midfield from Warren Adams. The Newry team can be proud of their efforts against a very strong Cookstown team who are one of the favourites for Junior league 1 this season. Newry are at home next week to local rivals Banbridge.
