CAUSEWAY COAST HALF MARATHON - PORTBALLINTRAE
On Saturday, Paul Le Blanc and Aaron Montgomery took the long journey to Portballintrae to take part in the popular CauseWay Coast Half Marathon run by 26Extreme and of which was the events' 10th anniversary. This event has one of the most beautiful scenery backdrop with the Half Marathon starting at the Rope Bridge Quarry Car Park bringing the runners along the coastal path traversing the challenging surfaces of road, trail, beach, wooden walkways and rocks with the additional addition of steep climbing until they reach the finish line in Portballintrae.

Paul Le Blanc had a fantastic 12th overall finish placing and took the second placing in his age category in a time of 1:41:19. Aaron Montgomery placed 60th overall in a great time of 1:59:38. These were amazing placings in a race event that had 463 competitors.
ANNAGHMORE 5k
Lee Maginnis took part in the Annaghmore Festival of Running 5k on Saturday morning. This is a very popular event which gives the competitors the choice of races from a 18 miler, half marathon, 10 or 5k. Lee ran a good steady paced 5k road race on the undulating course and was rewarded with a well deserved first placing in at time of 19:10.
KILLEAVY 5k
Club Junior Anna Fegan participated in the annual Killeavy 5k event on Sunday morning. Anna ran a good race on an undulating road route and see finished with 16th overall position and 5th female placing.

TJ McELMEEL CUP, CROSS COUNTY, PALACE DEMENSE, ARMAGH
Joanne McCauley travelled to the city of Armagh and the beautiful setting of the Palace Demense for the 1st local Cross Country meet of the season. The weather was mild with sun and occasional rain showers. The course for the commencement of the female and male senior races had been well cut up by the previous Junior events so this added to the challenge of the hills. The mud definitely made the course a true cross country experience. The hilly course for the Senior and Master Ladies was 6k with 2 loops of the trails and grass which was challenging underfoot.
Joanne ran a consistent race using the challenge for her winter training off the sprint track. She finished middle of a large field of competitors. No results were available at the time of going to press. Credit to Armagh AC who organised and marshalled the event of which the course route was superb, the event well organised and the attendance numbers were large making it a great day for the city of Armagh.

Warrenpoint Formula Vee driver JB Farrell is celebrating after winning his first Championship title at Mondello Park last weekend.
Both JB and his Dublin-based Cicoda Racing team are competing in motor racing for the first time and JB has seen off many more established competitors in his class to win the title, underlining a stunning debut campaign for both team and driver.
With two podium finishes required from the weekend's two races, JB set about his business with a brilliant qualifying session on Saturday morning, claiming pole position by more than half a second from nearest competitor Philip Sheane. He converted this into a 3rd place finish in the afternoon's race, taking a mature approach to bring home the points.

"Prioritising the championship was the key thing for me", said Farrell after the race. "There was no point in taking risks fighting other cars too hard and maybe getting taken off, so the sensible thing to do was to resist the temptation to bang wheels and think about the bigger picture instead."
A miserably wet Sunday afternoon saw the second part of the double-header at the Kildare circuit. JB again started from pole position, his fifth of the season, underlining his impressive pace over one lap. However, as the race loomed, so did the weather. Constant rain created a new challenge for the 'Point man. "I've never driven a single lap in the wet before - not even in practice - so the race to decide the championship wasn't an ideal time to learn!" continued Farrell. "Almost everything I've learnt this year about driving a racing car went out the window, so it was a steep learning curve to understand how the car would behave in the conditions."
With grip at a premium, many of the Formula’s more experienced drivers took off-track excursions throughout the race but JB kept his car pointing in the right direction in 2nd place. Tension grew as the laps counted down but with the Cicoda driver unchallenged from behind, anxiety turned to joy as he emerged from the spray to cross the line and claim his maiden title.
"This has been a fairytale for both me and the team," he commented afterwards. "Almost exactly 12 months ago we had no experience in motorsport, just a dream that we wanted to pursue and we made the decision to go for it. I'm excited now to see what we can achieve in 2020 and how far we can go in the sport."
Cicoda Racing founder Ron Healy was understandably delighted for his driver and for SM Racing, the Kildare-based race engineering team who provided mechanical expertise and support throughout the season.
“I have always believed that, if there is something you want to do and the opportunity presents itself, it would be irrational not to take it,” said the Dubliner. “At the same Leinster Trophy weekend at Mondello Park exactly a year ago, a chance meeting led to that opportunity for Cicoda Racing and JB. None of those involved could realistically have believed that a Championship was on the horizon. Ultimately, with consistent finishes among the best in the Formula and only one non-finish, it was that consistency that won the Title.”
The attentions of both JB and Cicoda Racing were already looking forward to 2020, with thoughts turning to the possibility of the team running a second car to be piloted by another up-and-coming racer. However, first they will be competing in the final round of the season this coming weekend at Kirkistown before the winter break.
Sponsorship packages are now ready for the 2020 season. Contact racing@cicoda.ie for available options.

It was all good learning for the Craobh Rua hurlers and they all enjoyed the experience of playing hurling under floodlights. The evening was finished off by Davy Carr son of the late Tony presenting medals to all who participated.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
Senior Men
Our senior men were in championship semi-final against Wolfe Tones on Sunday evening but at the time of writing the result of the game was unknown.
U14 Boys
It was disappointment for the U14 boy’s amalgamation of Patrick Rankins on Tuesday night, losing out by two points to St Peter’s in the league final, 6 – 6 to 4 – 10.

Despite going through the league campaign unbeaten the young Rankins weren’t at their best on the night and fell just short. They led by a single point at the break, 3 – 5 to 3 – 4, and with time almost up in the second-half they trailed by six points but they fought right until the end, scoring a late goal and point but unfortunately it just wasn’t enough. Overall it has been decent season for this group of lads and their management with the highlight undoubtedly being their participation in the All-Ireland Féile when they were narrowly defeated in the semi-final of the competition.

Well done to our U12 and U14 girls who took part in a sponsored walk this morning, climbing to the top of Camlough Mountain.

September has been a very quiet month for Newry AC where the track and mountain season are coming to an end and the athletes are now preparing for the incoming cross country, winter road, trail and indoor track events. However, in September, Newry went International with representation at the European Masters in Italy as well as a holiday 5k in Spain and back at home a podium finish in Castlewellan and cross country season commences in the South of Ireland.
MILL HILL RACE, CASTLEWELLAN
Three Newry AC Athletes alongside 117 other brave souls took part in the infamous annual uphill only Mill Hill Race on the 3rd of September. Mark Malone after a long period on injury recovery stormed the unforgiving hill, challenging the on form Zak Hanna and holding off up and coming young athlete Jared Martin to take 2nd place in an impressive time of 5:55. Johnny Gregg finished 6th overall and lifted 1st place in the MV50 category in at time of 6:25. Young Brianna Gregg finished 67th in a great time of 9:35.
STAR OF THE SEA AC, CROSS COUNTRY, STAMULLEN, IRELAND
Meadow and Joanne McCauley travelled south to Greenanstown, Stamullen on Sunday 22nd to take part in the Star of the Sea AC 31st Annual Cross Country Meet. This race, which marks the traditional start to the cross-country season, saw athletes compete over the rolling lands of East-Meath.
In wet weather but with the undulating ground still good underfoot, Meadow competed in a very competitive U17s 3k race finishing 14th and Joanne completed the Masters 3k race in 16:14. This is a good benchmark for the incoming cross country season for the Newry athletes.
5k EASD, BARCELONA, SPAIN
Sarah Jane Beattie whilst on holidays this week in Barcelona took on a diabetes charity 5k in blistering heat instead of the traditional relaxing by the pool! She finished 57th overall, 2nd in her age group in a fantastic time of 21:25 and this was out of field of 972 competitors. Well done Sarah Jane.

EUROPEAN MASTERS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS, CAORLE, ITALY
Joanne McCauley after a great home athletic season travelled to represent the GBNI Team at the European Masters Athletics Championships, Caorle, Italy. Joanne’s main focus was the 400m and in poor weather (thunderstorms) she placed 8th in a highly talented F45 category with a new PB and well pleased to be coming home with a top 10 placing in the European Masters. In the 200m later in the week, in 30 degree heat, Joanne had a good race, but with a niggling tendon issue after long jump the previous day, she placed a credible 19th out of field of 33 athletes, not far off her PB and missing out on the semi finals by 3 places. This was a fantastic experience, with lessons learned for next season and a great end to a great season of top performances in Ireland and the UK. Winter training will now be Joanne’s focus for the new 2020 Indoor and Outdoor Track Season.
