Over 1,000 runners have registered for this year’s Novosco 10k Grand Prix so far, and last year’s runner up, Patricia Brown, of Newry City Runners Club, is currently in third position. Tommy Hughes of Termoneeny Running Club leads the table with just four races remaining in the 17-race series. Tommy heads the rankings based on the runners’ age-graded scores, with 95 percent.

Sponsored by IT company Novosco and organised by Glenn Grant, owner of electronic timing chip company ChampionChip Ireland, the Novosco 10k Grand Prix features individual runners of all ages and ability as well as six-person club teams.
Cash prizes are awarded to the top 25 finalists and top five clubs. A cash prize will also be awarded to the top three runners across the finish line on race day at each of the 17 races*.
Unique to the Novosco 10k Grand Prix, each race is timed and age-graded using an aggregate scoring system meaning the series is carefully designed to be mindful of gender, age and ability.
Each runner’s ranking is updated in an overall leaderboard after each race. Runners must complete six of the 18 races to feature on the official leaderboard.
The 2019 Novosco 10k Grand Prix is supported by Forestside Shopping Centre and Athletics Northern Ireland.

Senior Men
Our senior men are through to the semi-final of the Intermediate Championship following a two-point extra-time win over St Paul’s in Crossmaglen on Sunday, 0 – 15 to 0 – 13.
The sides swapped two points apiece in the opening exchanges with Eamon McCabe and Ciaran Mackin getting the early Shane’s scores before a Matthew Girvan point put them ahead for the first time. A pointed St Paul’s free tied the game again before points from Paul O’Rourke and Ciaran Mackin gave the Shane’s a narrow advantage but it was the Lurgan side who got the next two scores to tie the game at five points each. A second point of the half from Matthew Girvan put the Shane’s ahead but once again it was quickly cancelled out by a St Paul’s score, only for Ciaran Mackin to fire over his third point to put the Camlough side back in front. Two points in the final five minutes of the opening period saw St Paul’s go into the half-time interval with a narrow one-point lead, 0 – 8 to 0 – 7.

An early David McCabe point tied the game in the opening minutes of the second-half before a Paul O’Rourke free edged them in front again only for St Paul’s to draw level minutes later. Raymond Fitzpatrick pointed for the Shane’s soon after before two points in row from St Paul’s saw the scoreboard swing in their favour again but Eamon McCabe brought the sides level again as the game entered added-on time. With thirty-one minutes on the clock St Paul’s led again with their twelfth point but the Shane’s weren’t to be denied and Paul O’Rourke replied almost immediately to see the game end all square at twelve points each and into extra-time.
It seemed as if St Paul’s made the best possible start to the first period of extra-time when they goaled in the opening minute but it was ruled for a square-ball infringement. A Paul O’Rourke free followed soon after as the Shane’s went one ahead and David McCabe tagged on another score minutes later, and the Camlough men held onto their two-point advantage until half-time in extra-time.
The second period of extra-time was a low scoring affair as both sides understandably tired and only managed another one point each with Paul O’Rourke firing over his fifth point, and his sides fifteenth, and that was enough to see the Shane’s over the line and into the semi-final, 0 – 15 to 0 - 13.
This was a really dogged game with the sides going score for score throughout but the Shane’s done just enough to claim the win and like last week against Keady, they were excellent in defence throughout. With Andy Murnin playing at full-forward for St Paul’s they launched countless high balls in his direction but the Shane’s defence held firm and snuffed out the threat more times than not.
The draw for the championship is scheduled to take place on Monday and will see the Shane’s paired against either Wolfe Tones, Grange or the winners of Clan na Gael and Crossmaglen II’s.
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies were scheduled to play Crossmaglen last Monday night but Crossmaglen conceded the game and as a result, the Shane’s ladies were crowned winners of the Division 2 league. Senior Men
Our senior men are in the draw for the next round of the championship following a comprehensive eleven-point win over Keady in Ballymacnab on Saturday night, 4 – 8 to 0 – 9.
A Connaire Mackin free after two minutes got the ball rolling for the Shanes but three points in a ten-minute spell put Keady ahead. The Shanes went in front minutes later when a speculative effort from Paul O’Rourke deceived the Keady keeper and the ball crept over his head in to the net and the Camlough side led by one. Three further points from Greg McCabe, Ciaran Mackin and David McCabe saw the Shanes go into the half-time interval with a well-deserved four-point advantage.
An early second-half free saw Keady reduce the deficit to deficit to just three but two great points from Matthew Girvan and Paul O’Rourke kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Shane’s. A fifth point Keady point left them just four in arrears but this was quickly cancelled out by an Eamon McCabe point before great work from Ciaran Mackin and Paul O’Rourke put Micheál Brady through on goal and the captain made no mistake from close range to net his side’s second goal of the contest. Less than five minutes later Paul O’Rourke raised another green flag when he got on the end of a Raymond Fitzpatrick knock down to stroke the ball to back of the net. The Shanes now led by eleven points with just over ten minutes left on the clock but Keady managed to reduce the deficit to eight with three frees in a row, all from frees. The sides then swapped points with Connaire Mackin firing over a ’45 and Keady landing another pointed free, and with the game deep into injury time Paddy Gregory wrapped up the Shanes win when he used all his experience to coolly slot the ball under the Keady keeper for his team’s fourth goal of the game to leave the final score 4 – 8 to 0 – 9 in favour of the Shanes.
Over the sixty minutes the Shanes were good value for their win, with their defensive unit in particular putting in a brilliant shift to restrict their opponents to just three points from play.
Training continues as normal this week in preparation next weekend’s scheduled game but at the time of going to press the date, time and opponents were still unknown.

Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies have two away games scheduled for the coming week – Crossmaglen at 6.45pm on Monday night and Mullaghbawn at 6.45pm on Thursday night. These are their final two league games of the season and they require one point to win the league.

ROBBIE SOARS MONT BLANC
The entire club of Slieve Gullion Runners are so proud of fellow member Robbie Marsh has he took on this extreme challenge of the World famous CCC Mont Blanc with an amazing belief and commitment at the start line in Courmayeur France knowing that the alps with the amazing Mont Blanc lay in wait of him for the next 23 hours. This race saw runners from all over the World take part and Robbie held his own by ranking runners at each time stage , we tracked Robbie live in to the small hours of Saturday morning having started earlier that Friday and Robbie was finding his form at each stage and getting stronger. It's not too often we hear about runners running 3 countries in one day and over some of the highest peaks in Europe at the same time, but Robbie ran at the start in Italy then on to Switzerland and finishing in France at Chamonix under the famous arch and covering 101 KM distance and a proud moment to have his family waiting for him at the finish line. Robbie's finishing time was an amazing 23:06:09 and you can count that he is already planning something again ,but he will have to do something extra special to beat this ,as this is not just a local runner doing the area proud but Ireland. Well done to Robbie and his family a true moment to treasure for ever. #teamSGR
