Rory Mulvaney and Meadow McCauley made the journey to Dundonald on Saturday afternoon for the prestigious annual Comber Cup XC. This event is one of the largest XC annual events to be held each year in Ulster with all the major clubs attending.
After heavy rainfall overnight and with the school age groups running first and cutting the course up - ground conditions where very heavy going. The course also had a new layout with a lot of hill work and the mud added to the extra pain exertion on the legs.
Meadow McCauley raced in the U17s 4K Race. She ran a strong race on the hills and mud. Her club winter endurance training has paid off along with her grit and determination - rewarding Meadow with a fabulous podium 3rd place in a time of 18:27.
Rory Mulvaney had to take in the gruelling 8k course. This was the finale race of the day which meant the ground was now well cut up making the hill climbs and descents tough going. The race took off at a very fast pace but as it progressed competitors soon found their own pace and Rory finished well up the field of 187 athletes with 52nd position and 11th M35 in a time of 34:10.5. A good start to his XC season.

Newry 1s 3-7 Cookstown 1's
Newry were brought back to earth with a bang on Saturday having won their first three games of the season Cookstown put seven past the home side. Newry took the lead in the first quarter with Keith McWilliams finishing off from a short corner after the initial shot was saved by the keeper. Cookstown had plenty of the ball but could not find the equaliser in the first quarter. In the second quarter Cookstown really pushed forward and scored three goals within 7 minutes to take the wind from Newry's sails and go in at half time with the two goal advantage.

Newry pulled another back early in the third quarter when Jeremy Greer was fouled by the keeper and a flick was awarded, Colin McKnight stepped up and slotted home to get Newry back within one goal. The home side had more chances to get back on level terms but could not take advantage and again Cookstown stunned Newry with another three quick fire goals, completely blowing Newry out of the water. Newry did get a third with a well taken goal from Corey Large before Cookstown got their seventh and book their place in the next round of the Kirk Cup.
Newry would like to thank new kit sponsor SMET Building Products.

In the second quarter Newry flew out of the traps and David Hogg got them back on level terms with a fierce strike from the top of the circle.
Veteran David Andrews scored a great solo goal before McCafferty got a quick fire brace to see Newry race into a 4-1 lead at half time. Young Craobh Rua Hurlers Tyrone Tournament Victory
Craobh Rua Under 10 hurling team made their own bit of local sporting history when they travelled to Carrickmore County Tyrone to complete in the home Club’s prestigious Féile An Fhómhair tournament and returned back home as winners of the Pláta an Fhómhair.
Teams from top hurling clubs throughout Ulster participated in the event.
The young Craobh Rua Camlocha Under 10 hurlers were placed in the same Group as Kevin Lynchs, Swatragh & Lavey (all Derry), Naomh Éanna (Antrim) and Naomh Colm Cille (Tyrone).
From that very tough group Craobh Rua qualified for the Plate semi final and were up against more Derry opposition in Na Magha.

Both teams were very evenly matched and after going score for score right through, it was no surprise the game ended in a draw. In extra time it was ‘first score is the winner’.
Our young hurlers showed great determination and commitment boy and after some fantastic work rate, secured the score that took them through to the final.
In the final Craobh Rua played host club Éire Óg Carrickmore.
Craobh Rua started really well and raced into a 2 goal lead at half time, but Éire Óg worked their way back into the game in the second half and with the last puck of the ball, scored a goal to level the game.

This group of talented and committed young hurlers faced extra time again, during which both teams had chances to win it, but the Camlough lads got the all important score to win the plate.
Everyone of our squad played their part in securing this prestigious win and it will be a sporting achievement that they should all be rightly proud of.
Our club want to thank Carrickmore for the invite to the tournament, which was an enjoyable and well organised day of sport.
The Craobh Rua Under 10 Team
Jack Bradley, Jack Taylor, Jamie McAleavey, Ryan McAleavey, Ronan Watters, Cealan Powell, Ryan Powell, Conor Byrne, Nathan O’Callaghan, Fiachra Crossan, Paudie Tavey & Eoin McEldowney.
Ballynahinch 1's 0-6 Newry 1's
Newry started their league campaign in style with the 6-0 thrashing of Ballynahinch on Saturday, this comes hot on the tail of two wins against Mossely and Antrim in their Kirk Cup fixtures.
From the start Newry dominated and restricted Ballynahinch to the odd long ball which were quickly moped up before Newry went back on the attack. The visitors took the lead with 5 minutes gone when Jeremy Greer deflected home a David England shot from a short corner. They continued to press Ballynahinch creating more chances but were unable to get their second until near the quarter mark when great play from Colin McKnight saw him break through the 'hitch defence, rounding three defenders before laying off to Alex Irwin to slot home at the back post.

Just before the half way mark McKnight turned from creator to scorer as he rounded the keeper and fired home a reverse stick shot. Three up at half time and Newry had the game in the bag.
Newry continued to try and add to the score in the third quarter and it was McWilliams who got on the score sheet with a reverse shot from the top of the circle which the keeper found to hot to handle and could only palm into his own net. Alex Irwin got his second after a quick passing move down the right, and it could have been more however Fletcher, McKnight and Taylor were unable to apply the finishing touches. Right on the full time whistle however Colin McKnight did get his second to leave the score 6-0.
Newry will host Cookstown in their final Kirk Cup match which will be a completely different test from Saturday, Newry will need to be at their best to take anything from this game.
Team: R McGivern, D. England, S. Megaw, J. Greer, C. Henning, N. McKnight, J. Taylor, A. Baird, C. McKnight, K. McWilliams, K. Fletcher, A. Irwin, C. Large
A GREAT SEND OFF FOR DUNE THANK YOU DERMOT & BARRY
Sunday saw a large field of runners come to say goodbye to one of the special running events in many years. The Dune Half Marathon 2019 held the last running of the event that saw close to 500 runners from all over Ireland and further afield come run it for the last time , taking off from the Quays in Newry towards Dundalk on what was a great day weather wise and had the runners in high spirits and a great festival mood. The Dune had something magical about it as an event and the hard work and dedication over the years from our fellow SGR members and founders of Dune Dermot Winters and Barry Duffy and the team of people who helped out, have given so many great memories for everyone involved with the race. We thank them all for giving us an event to us that will now leave a void in the running calendar for many. Our SGR members were out in force once again as both runners , helpers and pace runners on the day as well as supporting the event over the many years. SGR Joe Mc Kevitt came away with another podium finish in 2nd place for the club after finishing in 1st place in Killeavy last weekend, the strong SGR team all came to celebrate and give their all for the last Dune and all had amazing times and great memories to treasure with a medal that is a real time keeper in so many ways. Once again thank you Dermot and Barry and to your hardworking team for everything.

DUNE HALF MARATHON - NEWRY TO DUNDALK

Sarah Jane Beattie bit the bullet and moved out of her comfort zone to take part in the Dune Half Marathon. 13.1 miles is a lot longer in distance than Sarah Jane is used to on the track, trail or road - but she stepped up to the mark and had a great run. This race is not an easy one, with multiple hills to negotiate from the start point of Newry right through to the final finish destination of Dundalk. The weather was kind to the 458 runners this year and Sarah Jane enjoyed a good pace to come away with a fantastic time of 1:54.36.
