NIMRA "Dan Whites Dander" - Kilbroney Forest Park
On Saturday, Newry AC in conjunction with NIMRA organised the inaugural "Dan Whites Dander" mountain race.

Despite the forecast threat of a stormy morning the final round of the NI mountain racing championships was held in glorious weather. The six mile route took the runners past the Cloughmore Stone and on to the summit of Knockshee mountain, then to the Nurses Cottage near Kilfeaghan and the steep return leg to the summit of Sl Martin overlooking Rostrevor and to the finish line at Cloughmore car park.

Newry AC athletes were in the thick of the action right from the start and at the finish Maurice Harte, Rory Mulvaney and Esther Dickson came home in third, fourth and fifth places and all within 2 seconds of each other and just 2 minutes behind the overall winner, Oisin Brennan from Springwell Running Club.
Esther's fine run was enough for her to take the ladies prize and seal her position as NI champion and the preeminent mountain runner in NI. Despite a navigation error, Warren Cartmill came home in 20th place, Ciara Coffey did enough to finish second in her category and Charles Burns completed the course in 49th place.

The overall male and female winners were presented with the Pat Dunbarr trophies. Pat who was a local outdoor legend passed away last year and Newry AC were delighted to host this race in his memory and were further delighted when Pats wife, Winifred, attended the prize giving and presented the trophies to the overall winners. Newry AC would like to thank the army of volunteers that assisted and made this inaugural race a success and to club sponsor Mulvaney Corporate Services for their continued support. Results for the race can be found onwww.nimra.org.uk

The Irish pairing of Craig Breen and Paul Nagle lived up to their favourites billing with a resounding victory on the Today’s Ulster Rally which this year was based in Newry.
The result saw them confirmed as Irish Tarmac champions. Quickest times on five of the event’s nine stages in a Hyundai i20 were the building blocks needed to make it win number five of an unforgettable campaign, and put the title out of the reach of their rivals with one round of the Championship remaining.

Breen persevered with early set-up issues that affected the handling of his car to cross the finish ramp with 20.5 seconds in hand over top British Rally Championship finishers Matt Edwards and Patrick Walsh. “I grew up watching the Irish Tarmac Championship as a kid,” said a champagne soaked Breen, “and had you told me at the age of five that one day I would be an Irish Tarmac Champion I would never have believed you. It is a great feeling!”
Last year’s Ulster Rally winner Edwards was content with second place. Maximum points coupled with a non-finish for title rival Tom Cave, who crashed on the penultimate stage while holding third place, inches him closer to consecutive British Championship crowns. “It has taken a bit of pressure off us,” said the Ford Fiesta R5 pilot. “It was unfortunate what happened to Tom, but we look forward to another fight with him in Scotland next month.”
The final podium spot went to County Derry’s Callum Devine. Like Breen, the Ford Fiesta R5 driver was hampered by handling issues early in the event and an iffy fuel pump, but strong times over the closing miles saw him equal his best result of 2019. Welshman Meirion Evans (Skoda Fabia R5) and Alastair Fisher (Ford Fiesta R5) completed the top five.
Also decided on the Today’s Ulster Rally was the Junior British Rally Championship title. Knowing that a win would suffice, Josh McErlean stormed through the third and final loop of three stages to overhaul James Williams at the wheel of his Peugeot 208 R2. For his efforts, as part of the Peugeot UK and TOTAL prize fund the 20-year-old earned himself £2,500 in money. “It’s hard to believe and it will take time to sink in,” he admitted. “I can’t put it into words.” Claudy’s Jordan Hone (Opel Adam R2) was the third JBRC finisher home.

There were also wins for Andy Davies and Michael Gilbey in the Production Class, Damian Toner in the Modified Section and Stanley Orr who was the leading light in the Historic battle at the wheel of his Ford Escort Mk1. “I like the Ulster but it hasn’t liked me!” said Orr of previous struggles. “This year we have had a bit of luck for a change.”
Meanwhile, on only their second appearance in a R5 car, Stuart Biggerstaff and Anthony Nestor guided their Ford Fiesta to success in the National Rally despite a late engine scare.

Fresh from a seventh place finish at round nine of the World Rally Championship in Finland, Craig Breen and Paul Nagle turn their attention to matters closer to home with the Today's Ulster Rally revving into town this weekend.
The ceremonial start takes place at the Albert Basin in Newry tomorrow night Friday16 August from 8.45pm with the grounds of Newry High School the backdrop for the finish ramp celebrations on Saturday afternoon (5.30pm). A free spectator programme containing stage maps and a full entry list will be available to download from the Today’s Ulster Rally website (www.ulsterrally.com) and the event’s official Facebook page
Saturday’s rally comprises three special stages, repeated three times, with the first going live at 8.30am. In-between each loop of stages, Banbridge will host three regroups at Solitude Park car park. During these, fans and families will get the chance to meet various drivers and see their favourite cars at close quarters.
Craig and Paul are the top seeds for Saturday’s Today’s Ulster Rally, the penultimate round of the Irish Tarmac Championship. They currently head the standings courtesy of four victories from five rounds, with a win on the Ulster guaranteed to hand them the Irish Tarmac crown.
Breen – who last made an appearance at the Northern Ireland Motor Club event in 2012 with Nagle when they performed safety car duties in Peugeot Sport’s new 208 R2 rally car –is making the surprise switch from a Ford Fiesta R5 to a Hyundai i20 R5 for the Ulster Rally.

Running behind Breen is last year’s Ulster Rally winner, Matt Edwards (Ford Fiesta R5). The Welshman is also the defending British Rally champion and jointly leads that series with fifth seed Tom Cave (Hyundai i20 R5). The pair make the trip across the Irish Sea tied on points and know how decisive a perfect score on the Ulster could prove in their bid for silverware.
Separating the two visitors on the road is Alastair Fisher – the nephew of Bertie Fisher – and Callum Devine, two drivers who also have experience of competing at the sport’s top level. Josh Moffett – the reigning Irish Tarmac champion – starts at six ahead of his older brother Sam. Desi Henry, Jonny Greer and Marty McCormack start at eight, nine and 10 respectively.
A strong line-up of front-wheel-drive crews from the British and Irish series will also take part, including William Creighton and Josh McErlean (Peugeot 208 R2), Marty Gallagher and Johnnie Mulholland (Ford Fiesta R2T), and Jordan Hone (Opel Adam R2).

This weekend’s Today’s Ulster Rally is also a counting round of the FUCHS Lubricants British Historic Rally Championship, which Simon Webster leads by two points from Rudi Lancaster, and the FUCHS Lubricants Historic Asphalt Rally Championship where Dick Mauger and Paul Smith share the lead on 90 points apiece.
Ulster Rally Event Director, Richard Swanston, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have attracted such a strong line-up of leading drivers for the Today’s Ulster Rally. There is real strength and depth in the top ten which makes picking a winner incredibly difficult. Each and every single one of them has a chance as the crews and cars are all so evenly matched.”

Senior Men
Our senior men were in championship action away to Eire Óg on Sunday evening but at the time of going to press the result was unknown.
Senior Ladies
Following the defeat of Armagh Senior Ladies on Saturday our own senior ladies are scheduled to play at home next Saturday evening against Lisummon at 7.00pm. However, the date and time of this fixture clashes with our senior men’s championship game at home to Grange. At the time of going to press there has been no resolution to the issue so please keep an eye on social media over the coming days for updates.

U16 Girls
Despite putting in a decent performance last Monday night at home to Silverbridge our U16 girls came out on the wrong side of the result.
U14 Boys
Our U14 boy’s amalgamation of Patrick Rankins maintained their winning form with an excellent win away to Dromintee last Tuesday evening, 5 – 12 to 1 – 5.
The Rankins led by two points early on courtesy of points from Caolan O’Hare and Ruairi O’Brien but two in a row from Dromintee had them level. However, the Rankins dominated the remainder of the opening half, scoring a further 2 – 6 without reply to take a comprehensive lead into the break with the scores coming from Ethan Campbell (1 - 0), Michael McNally (1 – 0), Ruairi O’Brien (0 – 2), Adam Canavan (0 – 2), Daragh McNulty (0 – 1) and Conor Magennis (0 – 1).
Dromintee got the opening point of the second-half but the Rankins continued to boss proceedings and registered further scores through Ethan Campbell (2 – 1), Jamie McAnulty (1 – 0), Ruairi O’Brien (0 – 2) and Adam Canavan (0 – 1). Dromintee scored 1 – 2 in closing stages of the game but by that stage the Rankins had secured the win.
U14 Girls
Our U14 girls have a league game on Monday evening at home to Middletown.
U12 Girls
Our U12 girls are at home to Clan na Gael on Thursday evening in the quarter-final of the championship.
Congratulations
Congratulations to our senior footballer Damian Doyle and his wife Shauneen on the birth of their beautiful baby boy Oisin. Congratulations also to our former senior footballer Kieran Murphy and his new wife Sinead who tied the knot at the weekend.
Tidy Club Grounds
Whilst it is great to see everyone spending the long evenings enjoying our club facilities, we would ask that people use the numerous bins dotted around the club to dispose of their rubbish. We want to keep our grounds clean, safe and tidy for all and would greatly appreciate everyone’s cooperation with this.
Lotto
Last week’s winning lotto numbers were 1, 3, 19 & 21. There were no jackpot winners and 1 x match three winner. The lotto jackpot now stands at an impressive £4,200.
