Police are appealing for witnesses following a fire at an Orange Hall on Martins Lane in Newry on Saturday night.
Shortly after 7.15pm police received a report that a number of tyres had been placed against the rear of the building and set on fire. Damage was caused to the eves of the property as a result of the incident. Smoke damage was also caused to the interior of the building.
Danny Kennedy, Ulster Unionist Assembly candidate for Newry and Armagh, and Councillor David Taylor have expressed their disgust at the attack.
Mr Kennedy said “I condemn this hate crime which is deliberately timed by some republicans to raise tensions in the area in the run up to the election. The strategic position of Altnaveigh and its history clearly continues to play on the twisted and bigoted minds of those responsible for this attack.”
Councillor David Taylor added “The attack on the Orange Hall is a very sinister attempt to intimidate members of the local Orange Lodge. Altnaveigh Orange Lodge is very well renowned and widely respected within the Newry area and all right thinking people will offer strong condemnation of the attack.
“I am very confident that the members of Altnaveigh Orange Lodge will stand firm against this intimidation and appeal for anyone with information on the attack to report it to the police as soon as possible.”
Sinn Féin Newry & Armagh Assembly Election candidate Conor Murphy has condemned an attack on Altnaveigh Orange hall near Newry.
He stated "This attack on Altnaveigh Orange hall was wrong and I condemn it.
“If the objective was to cause community division I am confident that this will not happen.
"These attacks are no different than attacks on GAA halls, churches and other cultural and community facilities and must be rejected by everyone.
"I would encourage anyone with any information on this attack to bring it forward to the PSNI."
Police are working to establish a motive for the incident and are appealing to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area or anyone who has any information about this incident to contact officers in Newry on 101, quoting reference number 1126 25/02/17. Detectives from Reactive and Organised Crime Department, Newry have recovered items during a search of a property in the Cortreasla Road area Silverbridge earlier this month.
It is suspected these items are stolen property and police are keen to reunite them with their rightful owners.
The items include the following: Yellow compressor; Red brown mower; Red strimmer; Draper compressor; Yellow power washer; Leaf blower; Strimmer; Black tool box; Bosch grinder; Bosch drill and a Red tool box.

A number of valuable items have been stolen from the Parochial house of Saint Peter’s Chapel in Great George’s Street South, Warrenpoint.
The robbery took place sometime between 1am and 3am on Saturday 4 March.
Police are appealing for information.
Detective Sergeant Paul Murphy said: “The front window of the house was smashed and two rooms ransacked. A number of valuable items were stolen including two chalices – one gold and the other silver.
“We would ask anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious to contact detectives on the non-emergency police number 101, quoting reference 258 of 4/3/17.

Detectives have arrested a 48 year old man following an incident at a house in the Cois Locha area of Newry yesterday afternoon Tuesday 14 March where a man sustained stab injuries.
Detective Chief Inspector James Mullen said “Shortly after 4:00 pm police received reports a 25 year old man had been assaulted. The man is being treated in hospital for stab injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening as a result of this and a 48 year old male is currently in custody assisting officers with their enquiries.
"I would ask anyone who may have witnessed this assault or may have seen anything suspicious in the area to contact Detectives at Newry on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 762 14/03/17. A sum of cash has been stolen in a burglary of commercial premises on the Bog Road in Attical in the early hours of this morning. Police have appealed for information from anyone who might have seen any suspicious activity.
It's thought that two men broke in to the premises around 3:45am, Tuesday, 4 April before making off in a silver saloon vehicle towards the Hilltown area.
They were described as being 5’10” thin and wearing hats. One of the males hurt appears to have been walking with a limp; it is believed he was wearing tracksuit bottoms.
Anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity or may have seen a silver vehicle or a white van or any other suspicious vehicles which may have been in the area is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 97 04/04/2017. Further, if anyone observed a silver car in the area of Spelga Dam, and any males on foot in the area overnight, to contact police likewise. Police are appealing for witnesses following the assault of a man in his 60s in the Charlemont Square East area of Bessbrook just before 11pm last night (Wednesday 19 April.)
Sergeant Thomas Shields said: “This man was reported to be carrying a child’s carrycot, containing a number of other items, from a house and putting them into his car when he was approached by a male wearing a balaclava. This male spoke to him before assaulting him and making off with the carrycot and its contents. The victim is believed to have suffered facial injuries.
“The assailant is described as being around 5’ 6” in height, of heavy build and having a local accent.
“We would like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area late last night to get in touch with police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1373 of 19/4/17.

A 29 year old man is expected to appear in court in Newry tomorrow morning Saturday on charges related to the theft of high value cars worth around half a million pounds.
The man has been charged with a total of 29 counts of theft.
The thefts are thought to have taken place throughout the province between May 2016 and February 2017.

A 22 year old man has been arrested by police following an attempted robbery in the Buttercrane Quay area early this morning, Sunday 14 May.
A lorry driver was unloading his vehicle shortly before 3am when he was approached and threatened by a man armed with a knife.
The driver managed to lock himself in the cab of the lorry.
The 22 year old suspect was detained by police a short distance away on Dublin Road and he remains in custody.

Two men have been arrested following an incident in the early hours of Friday morning near Kilkeel. The menaged 36 and 29 were arrested on suspicion of blackmail, hijacking, theft and false imprisonment.
Detective Sergeant David Cameron said: “A 33 year old man was driving his car near Kilkeel when he was stopped by a ‘road closed’ sign and two men wearing hi vis jackets. They proceeded to take the driver’s car keys and then assaulted him while he was in the passenger seat of the car.
“He was subjected to this ordeal while one of the men drove around with the other in the back seat.
“The victim was eventually returned close to the spot where he was stopped originally and was then left at the side of the road. The men demanded his mobile phone before driving off in his car.
“Police later recovered the stolen car and mobile phone from an address in east Belfast.”
