Damage was caused to a door of a house in Cleary Crescent last night after liquid poured from a bottle was set alight.
It happened around 9.15pm last night.
Inspector Jon Burrows said: “Early indications are that a flammable liquid was poured on the door from a plastic bottle before the bottle was placed at the door and set alight.
Damage was caused to the door. The flat was not occupied at the time however a neighbour in a nearby flat was treated for some smoke inhalation. We are keen to hear from witnesses or anyone who was in the area at the time. The number to call is 101.”
Condemning the incident Deputy Chairperson Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Gillian Fitzpatrick said “This kind of criminality is simply unacceptable. Any act of arson is abhorrent but to target a block of flats is particularly dangerous with the huge risk of fire spreading to adjoining properties.
“The arsonist responsible showed breath-taking recklessness and disregard for the innocent people who could have been killed in their own homes"
Also speaking about the incident was Cllr Charlie Casey who said “This was a thoroughly reckless attack that could have ended in unimaginable tragedy.
“While there was nobody in the flat at the time there were other people in the building, at least one of whom suffered smoke inhalation. This fire was started, with an accelerant, inside the building and could have easily burned the entire building to the ground and everybody in it.
“Anyone capable of such a grotesque act is a danger to the entire community and must be apprehended.
“It was still bright when this attack happened. If anybody saw anything I’d urge them to contact the PSNI immediately and help catch this person before their blatant disregard for life leads to tragedy.”

Two people have been arrested following a disturbance in the Orior Park area of Bessbrook earlier this month.
On Monday, 15 June, 2015, around 6.45pm, an altercation took place between a group of people. It is alleged a machete and beer bottle were used.
A 41 year old female and 41 year old male were arrested for common assault, possession of an offensive weapon and attempted GBH. They were later released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police in Newry are appealing for information following an incident of criminal damage at Canal Quay in Newry.
Constable Stephen Adair said: “Sometime between 2.30pm on Tuesday, 23 June and 9.50am on Thursday, 25 June, a blue Renault Megane, parked in the Canal Quay area, was damaged.
The passenger doors were scraped and an X was scraped into the bonnet of the car. “We would like to hear from anyone who has information in relation to this incident. We can be contacted in Newry on 101, quoting ref: 277 250615.”

Police in Newry are appealing for information following the theft of parts from a car last week.
Constable Nicki Martin said: “Sometime between 9am and 4pm on Monday, 22 June, the wheel trims and front bumper grille were taken from a silver Volkswagen Passat, parked in North Street car park. It is believed an attempt was made to remove the wheels as the wheel nuts were loosened. This could have resulted in serious injury if the car had been driven off.

Police in Newry are asking locals in Bancroft for their help after three cats sustained unexplained injuries in the area.
Constable Ali McCartney said: “We received a report of a cat in the Barcroft area sustaining injuries to its pelvis on 28 June. It transpired that this is the third cat in the area to sustain injuries of this nature. Two of the cats had to be euthanized. The third cat is currently being kept in a cage to hold it immobile while the bone heals.
“There is a possibility that these injuries are being inflicted on the animals and we would appeal to anyone who has information which may assist our enquiries to contact us in Newry on 101, quoting ref: 1064 280615. If you notice any suspicious activity please contact us straight away on 101.”

Police in Warrenpoint are appealing for information following the theft of a horsebox.
Constable Caoimhe McCaughey said: “On Saturday evening, 4 July, a green Ifor Williams horsebox with a silver roof was taken from a yard on Hilltown Road, Newry.
A white people carrier and an old style red campervan/horse lorry were observed acting suspiciously in the area around the time the horsebox was taken. Four saddles, a pressure washer, a mobile welder, a socket set and two white and black Jack Russell pups were also taken from a shed on the property.

Police in Newry are appealing for information after a handbag was stolen from a car in Cornmarket on Friday, 4 July.
Constable Rory Warnock explained: “Around 8pm a female driver was reversing her silver Opel Meriva car out of a space in Dunnes car park when a male approached the passenger side, opened the door and made off with her black Guess handbag. The male got into a dark coloured, southern registered, saloon car which sped off in the direction of Francis Street.
“The male is described as being around 6ft tall, in his late 20s with short dark hair. He was wearing dark clothing.
“A passerby approached the female motorist after the incident to say he had witnessed the theft. We would like to hear from this man or anyone who has information which could assist our investigation. We can be contacted in Newry on 101, quoting ref: 1178 04/07/15.”

Police in Newry are appealing for information following a road traffic collision on the A1 where a cyclist was injured.
Constable Stephen Cunningham explained: “Around 10.50pm on Friday, 3 July a passer by came across a male cyclist who had sustained injuries following a collision with a lorry on the A1 between Newry and Banbridge. The 21 year old cyclist sustained injuries to his leg which required medical treatment.
“We are asking the driver of the lorry involved to contact us. We would also like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or has information that may assist our investigation. We can be contacted in Newry on 101, quoting ref: 1408 030715.”

Police in Newry are appealing for information following the report of criminal damage to a car in the Clanrye Avenue area on Thursday 16th July. Rags soaked in paint thinner were left on top of a car sometime between 9.30pm on Wednesday 15th and 6am on Thursday 15th July causing damage to the roof.
Investigating officer, Constable Mark Jennings, has appealed for anyone with any information to contact police in Ardmore on 101 quoting reference number 214160715.
